NiftyNiblick
$3,225.28. I just went onto TGW. To offset thoughts on how hard it was for me to pick up the balls after a short chipping and putting session early this morning, I let my mind wander to considering one last new set of clubs--if I actually make it back onto the course. The above figure--for new clubs and bag-- is the deduction from my kids' inheritance if it comes to that. Back in the golden times when we bought clubs from our club pro on the course, it was forty bucks per wood and twenty-five bucks per iron. Could it be that I've just lived too long? StrokerAce
the amount of people that buy everything from putter to driver to bag brand spanking new from a retail store has got to be very small. I'm not arguing that golf isn't cost prohibitive but there are so many 'affordable' ways to purchase gear now that unless you are independently wealthy (which some are) it just doesn't make sense to spend that much on equipment. NiftyNiblick
When you've gotten well past the mortgage and kids' tuition days, you want what you want and I'm not getting my personal fitting specs on EBay. That's the price of a new fifteen-slot cart bag and fifteen clubs with the shafts and grips that I want to stuff into it. And it doesn't even include a driver, the most expensive of clubs, because I do better with a strong lofted fairway wood than with a fat, ugly driver. NiftyNiblick
Here's the thing, GJ. If they offered sets with 5º increment gaps, playing with fourteen clubs would be more fun. They don't, so fifteen are required (well, preferred). Also, the Dukes of Decrepitude TUES-THURS-FRI Morning Seniors League, which has surpassed both the USGA and the R&A in prestige as a sanctioning body, observes a disturbing number of "local rules." cnosil
Why not just get something like the apex cf16? From 8 down has 5* gaps. Then bend the others about 1* to finish the set. While it will change bounce, it probably isn't that big of a deal in the mid to long irons. StrokerAce
....like I said: "independently wealthy". I played over the weekend with a dentist who is a 1 handicap and you could tell he was pretty well off. He was in his mid to late sixties, had a Cleveland driver from about 8-10 years ago and irons to match, used a beCu ping wedge and shot 73. He's a 1 hcp and was a multiple time state champ. 3000 plus on clubs is ____ (fill in your adjective) Driver- Cobra Aerojet LS Woods- Cobra LTD 3w 15*, 5W 19*, F9 24* Irons- XXIO X (6-A) Wedges- Callaway Jaws Raw (54/58) Putter- Bettinardi BB56 Ball- Maxfli Tour X Buggy- Motocaddy M7 GPS Remote Electric Caddy Bag- Motocaddy Dry-Series Proudly testing for 2024:

azstu324
I'm a huge advocate of component brands. I.e. companies that aren't in the spotlight, paying multi-millions for sponsorships and R&D.. Maltby, edel, Wishon, KZG. Etc. This allows them to make excellent clubs with the same tech that the big guys use but not charge you your kids inheritance for a set. Some of them have fitting liaisons and some rely on online static fitting.. Or you can do what I did and get fit for clubs and use those specs to place a phone order for a custom set. If somebody gave me $3k today and said "go buy a new set", I'd respectfully decline because the set that I paid $400 for cut, bent, built to my specs (with my favorite grips and shafts) and shipped is just as nice as any $3k set available. That's not wishful thinking either.. I've hit them all and these are as sweet as they come. NiftyNiblick
All of this should be viewed from the perspective that if I am able to play, this will be my very last set. I'd like to buy it all at once like my first new set decades ago. I'd like it to be special. I don't need new clubs. I have almost every golf club that I've ever owned. Right now, though, it's all very iffy. I'm not sure how I'll be able to play if i have so much trouble just picking up balls off the practice green.
