Same here. They play almost like hybrids.

This is how I feel too. The soles are very large. I struggled more with the short irons (7-U) in my play so far. I don't doubt I'll get the hang of them but it's going to take a couple weeks.

Y'all mentioned you can't take big divots with them. Does this make them harder to hit out of the rough or bad lies?

I know when I hit them right they do not move off line. I just need to find my swing with them and we will be spot on. I am close. It's almost like taking my 4 iron swing with every club. Just try and pick it off the turf. I'll be keeping everyone posted.

This is interesting. I have the Hogan Ft. Worth Hi 4, 5, & 6 Iron and find them a bit difficult to play as they seem very big (which they are next to the Ft. Worths) so I haven't had them in the bag for a few rounds now. I can imagine how huge the Ping G700 short irons must seem.

I wonder if a combo set of the G700 with the i500 or even i210 would be a more playable set for mid and low handicaps?

Here is a quick shot of the soles. Hogan Ft Worth Hi, Srixon U65 & Ping G700. The shot does not capture the offset difference very well. I should be able to get to the range tomorrow night and get a better shot of the offset.

On a hole that often gives me fits, and as a guy who is never a big hitter, I could definitely get used to this:

Were you just flighting the 8 iron or do you have some major distance gaps with these irons?

There's a slight downgrade in that approach, but that was all carry distance, as it hit on the green and stopped after a bounce.

These irons have created gapping issues for me, which I'll cover in my stage 2. To be sure, it's not problems between the irons, but with the hybrids above and wedges below them.

Great start guys. I'm interested too because the G700 while similar has a different look than my G30. I would love to see your spin numbers on a 7 iron, if possible.

@GB13 - because of the similarities I can comment on the rough with the G30 and I think it applies. I agree that the thicker sole makes hitting these clubs more like hitting a hybrid. Our rough is thick and gnarly right now. The only why a hybrid comes out is to play it back in the stance and get steeper - sort of a modified punch. I've been using that approach with my irons also and the results have been useful - comes out lower with less spin so you don't want to at tucked pins but it works.

India 52,56 (60 pending)  UST recoil 75's R flex

Evon roll ER 5 32 inches

It's our offseason so auditioning candidates - looking for that right mix of low spin long, more spin around the greens - TBD

Okay, thanks Rev. I can handle the modified punch. I was just concerned since the soles are wide and the heads are quite large, that it would be difficult to get any height on the ball of of the rough. The concern was constant knee-high screamers.

I am trying to contact a friend who owns a TrackMan but he hasn't gotten back to me. Not looking good... I'll try to look at other options. I know for a fact, though, that they do spin less, courtesy of the jacked lofts.

Great start guys, this has me wondering what a combo set with G700 long irons and I500s from 7 down would be like 🤔

Played in our league last night. Shot 33 (-3). 7/9 GIR. No bogies. I'm getting the hang of these irons. Second bogey free round with them in competition although last night was only 9 holes.

I will say that now that it has been mentioned, I am more and more conscious of the struggle to rip balls out of the rough with these. That may end up being the one drawback that gets highlighted in my Stage 2.

But the flipside: when they're working correctly, I avoid the rough more often :)

Same thing with my Cleveland HB irons.   The thick bermuda in Georgia grabs at your irons and especially those that have a big butt.

Question for you Testers, did any of you use or try the G400 irons? If you did is there any improvement/advantage with the G700's?

Thanks, I'm playing G400's now and very interested.

I did. They are pretty similar, but the G700s are a little longer. I did use different shafts, so that may have skewed the results slightly. The G400s sound and feel better.

So another week has gone by and needless to say these irons are starting to grow on me. Last night I shot my best round EVER! I tied our course record (although from the white tees) with a 60 (-12). My previous best was a 61(-9). So now I have 2 course records to my name!

attachicon.gif IMG_8156.JPG

I can't believe how these irons fly. I played the par 3's (-3) the par 5's (-4). I hit the long irons so high. This helps me so much into par 5's and even on the par 3's. Yes the putter was on fire. But these irons were as well. Anytime you put together a round like that everything has to be working and it was. I'm not going to lie as I thought rounds like this were behind me.

attachicon.gif IMG_8158.JPG

Shot of the day on the par 3 8th hole. G700 PW 148yds.

I have our couples club championship Sunday and the US Mid Amateur qualifier on Tuesday. I need to keep the positive thoughts flowing.

But it doesn't count because you're using game improvement irons ;)

Love it. Looks like you need to to get a new personalized ball!
