Are drugs the golfers best friend?

Recommended Posts

When I was under 50,I never had to go see a doctor and only took pills when pescribed (ie - which was very rare).

Now,that I am over 50,my upper body (mostly arms and shoulders) always have a constant dull nagging pain and I am finding that I am taking drugs almost every night to help me sleep.

when I am golfing or exercising, the pain is not there. Just when I am not active.

God,something I would have never thought before in my life,I am now thinking - medicinal marijuana. And it will become legal in Alberta this fall? Wife won't go for it though and cannot do it with a 14 yo and 11 yo in the house 😀. they are my sanity.

Are their any other golfers out there with similar issues or body pains. or I am I just an old fart?

Nope. Not old.. experienced.

And the aches and pains. Mine seem to disappear with activity as well. My problem. The brain is much younger than the body.

Although I'm only 35... I'm in the same boat as you. I can't sit or stay still for long or I “lock up” and the pain from my hips, back and legs is almost unbearable. What helps me a lot is some stretching and mobility exercises from when I was training for powerlifting. Pick up a foam roller and look up DeFranco's Agile 8 and Dr. McGill's Big 3. Do them exercises the best you can and some shoulder mobility (windmills, high rep light band pull aparts/face pulls, broomstick stretches, etc...). Epsom salt baths help a ton too.

As far as the medical marijuana... I feel like that's a much better choice than pain killers or other meds when used responsibly. There are healthier ways to use it... like edibles or vaporizers. There are still a good bit of people that have negative views about it but I think it's much safer than prescribed drugs or alcohol.

Couldn't do the hippie lettuce if I wanted to...just too many issues with using that stuff because of my security clearance needs to even think about it. But I do pop a couple of Advils before each round or even practice to help keep me loose and prevent the normal aches from going from mild to screaming. I also self-medicate out there with a beer or 2 and wind down with Bourbon afterward. ;)

I don't do pain meds prophylactically, ever, but after the fact, 10mg of (legally prescribed) oxycodone sometimes sneaks into the picture in between epidural steroid shots.

There are two possibilities--you get old and worn out or you die young.

I'm not the Guy who came up with this system.

I don't know if drugs are a golfer's best friend--that's kind of extreme--but they keep a lot of us on the course until they can't anymore.

As for Mary Jane, I can't speak for the medicinal value but recreational is legal here.  Quitting tobacco smoking was so hard that I wouldn't want to inhale smoke ever again.  My littlest one is forty-one so no role model issues.

Edibles?  Maybe at a party or something, but that's about it.

A couple of pulls off the cannabis oil pen is all I need. One with a high CBD (cannabidiol) is great for relieving aches and pains and also relaxes me at the end of the day. I also believe it has helped keep my blood pressure low as well as my cholesterol.

And cold and rainy days call for tea with echinacea.

We live in a sad time where you're only allowed to abuse Advil and alcohol legally. Be careful taking Advil regularly, your kidneys might not like it.

I got lots of aches and psin at 51 years old. I take BP meds and was popping ibu and tykenol in the spring like craszy. With the warm weather its a rarity.

I eat an edible a couple times a month but thats it. Mainly to relax.

CBD oils are getting rave reviews with more and everyday getting great results. You arent getting loaded on CBD oil, you are treating an ailment. I dont take it because of my BP meds. If I can get doctor approval next time in, I will talk about it with him.

You really should consult your doctor ‍⚕️ when taking meds on a regular basis. You might be replacing joint pain with something much worse. Believe it or not staying hydrated along with routine stretching will go a long way towards making you more comfortable. There are also other NSAIDs that might be more appropriate for your specific needs. Mobic is great for joint pain for many people while ibuprofen may be for others. Google is great but your primary care physician or specialist really is your best source for quality health care.

I'm 47, after hitting about 50 balls om the range my lower back muscles hurt a little. My wife uses her elbows to remove the knot. I need to do some stretching before hand. Ughhhh old age!!

Guys, Charli nailed it (exercise and stretching.). The latter had been something I neglected for years and that was a mistake. Over the winter I started a 'yoga for golf' program. While I don't follow it religiously everyday (takes about 30 min) I do some of the warm-up/stretching exercises before I go out and play. As a result I'm much more flexible before I hit my first drive.

Sorry to answer your question no. Exercise stretching should be your best friend. Drugs are just putting a bandaid on something that can probably be fixed through exercise and strengthening certain muscles. For example your knees bothering you it could be from tight hamstrings or maybe the lower back also could be from hammies or a weak core.

Cannabidiol. It's the non-psychoactive part of marijuana. It has been shown to treat inflammation, control seizures, and a variety of other health benefits. It's 50-state legal and can be derived from marijuana as well as hemp.

I eat a 10mg edible nightly. I have shoulder issues from surfing and sitting at a computer all day for work and entertainment. I have pretty much eliminated the need to take Advil/Tylenol, where before I was taking them almost daily. I am convinced about the inflammation relief, and the side effects are that it makes me sleepy. I've gotten all of my coworkers except for one to stop popping Advil/Tylenol, even one of my coworkers who was going to PT for his shoulder, admitted that CBD helps him more than anything.

Cannabis has so many health benefits and can benefit so many people with different ailments, it is truly a wonder drug. Naturally growing, not synthesized in a lab. It is absolutely foolish that the higher ups in our country spout nonsense about it having no medical uses or that it is as bad as heroin; really ridiculous claims. I'm waiting for these same morons to claim the world is flat.

When my Grandmother was dying of cancer last year I took her some high CBD edibles and oils and it really helped with her pain and helped her get a bit of her appetite back. Now she was of the typical old school mindset of “Reefer Madness-weed is terrible” that her generation where taught, but after I explained CBD and it's benefits she gave it a try. She needed something for the pain and knew that once she started the morphine, she'd be gone, just be laying there unable to communicate.

She lasted two more months after I went and saw her and I am happy I was able to help her manage her pain better than she was with pharmaceuticals.

Pain killing drugs, particularly synthetic opiates (or opioids as they are now called) are probably not the best answer for anything that can be fixed or at least mitigated.

Many golf type injuries are forever, however. Not fixable with present medical technology.

It's a choice between drugs and pain.

While I agree that drugs are clearly not the answer for everything, I would suggest, any moralizing aside, that in some instances, they're the only answer.

No long term side effects from constant use - or is it too early to know for certain? At 57, I too have frequent aches in my shoulder/neck.  I use Ibuprofen sporadically when it's really bad and know that constant use of this can have adverse effect on the kidneys.  I'm interested in this legal Cannabidiol but would want to know more about any long term issues.  I subscribe to the "no free lunch" axiom.

I haven't read every scientific article on CBD use, but if you look historically at MJ consumption, the worst part about it is consuming SMOKE due to combustion. Fast-forward to today, there are many alternative ways to partake -- edibles, vapor, etc. What are the long term side effects from constantly using carrots? Maybe not the best analogy but hopefully it provokes some thoughts.

I'm part of the group that subscribes to believing that big pharma and the government spread false propaganda about MJ because they don't want you to know the truth. I don't like to get high, but if you offered me medication in two forms - one cooked up in a lab, vs one that grows in the ground - I'm picking the latter. There are countless stories of people benefiting from cannabis consumption from cancer patients to people who suffer from violent seizures. I saw a documentary of someone who suffered from muscle spasms / seizures so bad he basically couldn't converse with people. They give him some cannabis and he's almost 100% cured. Most importantly - he's able to COMMUNICATE. Imagine a life where your body stopped you from social interactions? I get upset when it's windy and I can't golf...

I'm not here to spread my personal beliefs and tell everyone they are idiots for taking advil and whatever else their doctor prescribes them. If it works for you, great! I'm all about managing your pain the best way you believe. I don't discredit the fact that medicine works -- my mom works in the ER and tells me all the time that she's seen people come back from the dead due to medicine. However, I do have issues with people who judge others for finding relief in cannabis, especially when it's unwarranted and your only argument is that it's "the devil" or your DARE officer told you it's bad. Also the fact that it is illegal on a federal level, yet you can smoke rat poison because it has a label saying it's bad for you, is silly. Also, alcohol is legal -- how many people have been harmed by that? Science has found Cannabinoid receptors exist in our bodies which cause us to react to this plant -- almost makes it seem like we were meant to interact with it?

It's not the kidneys that is the problem with Advil in the short term, long term yes. Taking that many ibuprofen will cause stomach ulcers. If you are taking that many throughout the day, you should also take a Prilosec or Zantac, one of those that you take once a day. That will help prevent the ulcers. When I had shingles I was taking 12 ibuprofens per day. Yes 12. The doctor told me to make sure I took a Prilosec or Zantac or something like that as well. I used the Walmart brand of Prilosec. At some point you should stop taking the Advil and see a doc about something that you can take once a day to help with the pain.

I do take Prilosec once a day. The Advil cycle is sporadic. I have gone weeks without taking any, and then it seems like I need to start the cycle again.

It probably stems from the way I work... which is also sporadic. I'll do months at a time at at 55 - 70 hrs. a week. Then we slow down to 40 hrs. a week for a few weeks/months and then start back with the killer hrs. again. This is all done standing on concrete for 10 - 12 hrs. a day.

I've got special honey.  If I take a pea sized amount, all my aches, including my shoulder and elbow pain is subdued.  If I take more than a pea sized amount, I cannot golf, lol.

Once it is legal, I will be using this method all the time.  Quite inexpensive, and natural.  And non-physically addictive which is huge.

I've got an L5/S1 framen narrowing that has caused me significant issues for 15 years.  12 years ago had surgery that failed because scar tissue formed to replace the bone that was trimmed that was impinging the nerves to my left leg. Had chronic pain that limited me to one or two rounds a week, looking for a place to sit after walking 50 yds, etc.

Three years ago, got a neuro stimulator inserted in my back.  GREAT improvement, 90% relief.  Could walk a mile before needing to sit, could golf 3-4 times a week. One Tramadol after a round would keep the post golf pain and stiffness somewhat in check. Still was taking 6 to 8 ibuprofen a day on golf days, however.

Just recently, last 3 months, discovered the aforementioned CBD oil.  After trying the different versions, I have settled on a 10 mg pill once a day and high potency balm on the lower back before golf.  Serious relief!  I no longer take ibuprofen at all and have basically stopped the post round Tramadol.  I've been playing more often and walking as far as I want without any pain or need to sit down.  It's been a godsend!

For those with drug testing issues, I'm told the extracted CBD oil is safe and will not trigger any positive results.  For those who do not need to worry about it, the full spectrum version is a bit more effective and gives you a bit better "well being" feeling.

Also, for non-CBD states, I've got a tube of Hemp lotion (no CBD oil in it) and it too seems to help a lot (though not quite as much.

I'm a huge proponent of proper exercise (lifting, stretching, foam rolling) and a healthy diet (long-term, not this quick fix crap going around) but I've had close friends swear by the CBD stuff. Sometimes we take care of the body as best we can but every now and then we need something to help with the aches and pains. I'm not aware of any long-term studies for CBD but the short term tests seem to point towards a positive light. It's not a wonder/cure-all drug but it really helps with pain management.

My mom (nearly 70) suffers from frozen shoulder and takes a shot of tequila before bed every night. I wonder if she would feel some relief from CBD instead of wasting perfectly good Cazadores tequila.

If you have decent health insurance, those with significant and sustained pain in joints/muscles might want to get a physical therapy evaluation. You'd be surprised how cheap it can be and how good you'd feel after getting some recommended stretches from a professional.

Also, for non-CBD states, I've got a tube of Hemp lotion (no CBD oil in it) and it too seems to help a lot (though not quite as much.

can you tell me of this "high potency balm"?

I have been physically active my whole life. Hockey, soccer, karate, track and field, jogging, volleyball, weightlifting, and now golf.

For me,I believe that the body has become worn out and at my age,due to a lifelong being pysically active have taken its toll on the body.
