Stack and Tilt

Recommended Posts

This had to be the most well thought out program on swinging a golf club. The book ‘ videos ‘ on line info covered every single aspect of their method. Is this teaching still relevant? What happened with stack and tilt. I rarely find anything current on it, which is a shame

I struggle with the theory that one can read a book and learn how to swing. Yes, you can read a book that demonstrates the proper way to swing but I doubt you can learn how to do it just by reading a book. You still have to have the athletic ability to do it. Golf by definition an athletic endevour. The swing is more athletic than reading a book. By this theory everyone should be 18 under par every time. You just need to practice your own personalized swing to improve.

It's branding for the “reverse pivot” style of a swing. Weight stays mostly on the front foot during the backswing.

Body then releases around itself and rather than falling backwards, it rotates back around that front foot.

Lots of swing approaches come and go. Some still have devoted followers. Stack and tilt was a love it or hate it kind of approach. Like you, haven't heard much about it in 6 or 7 years.

I would say The Golfing Machine was more well thought out.

From what I've read, a lot of S&T instructors have moved away from that system.  Apparently the originators have chosen to retain some elements of their method even when newer and better data collection systems proved those elements to be incorrect.  Consequently, they lost a certain amount of credibility.

The thing is, no tour players got better doing S&T and several got decidedly worse. Not to mention it put an awful lot of strain on the lower back, which gives any golfing method a pretty short life span

Stack and Tilt?

Did it go the way of "square to square?"

Or better yet, the"Natural Golf Method?"

Some day we'll figure out that unless one is a genetic freak,

hitting the golf ball consistently well is an urban myth.

Baddeley was a very good putter when he broke out on the tour, but he seems to have lost it.  I watched him recently, and if he could putt like he used to, he might make a comeback.

I remember Rich Gedman of the Red Sox completely sabotaging his own baseball career

by his slavish devotion to the since discredited Charlie Lau / Walt Hriniak 'weight shift" hitting method.

Unlike golf, there is one ABSOLUTE method for hitting a baseball--The Ted Williams Science of Hitting Method.

My boy was a laser show with the aluminum Little League bat once I indoctrinated him into the Williams technique.

Good Lord, could it really have been that long ago?  He's 44.

And I'm,...oh s***.

Sean Foley's players on tour kind of have a stack and tilt look to them to me. Badeley went all in on it and quit after a year I think? Correct me if I'm wrong on that last part though. It just looks like it'd stress that lead leg and hip to me. The golf swing isn't a natural motion but s&tseems all that much more unnatural...

I started with S&T in 2011 and went from a 2 hcp. to a plus 2 in four months.  I also won a state senior amateur and was one of the better senior players in the state for many years.  Anytime my game goes downhill, I revert to the basic S&T principles because they work.  As I tell people, it works for me, you do what you want.  I have two observations on many of the prior comments on this thread.  First, while some tour players have tried it and haven't gotten to the next level, that's a very limited group.  Once someone has spent their life getting that good, it's pretty tough to get a lot better.  So, maybe it's better to start with it before you're good enough to play on tour.  At some point natural talent is required.   Remember, in any activity, a few people are the best in the world and the rest of us aren't.  Second, if you focus closely on the basic S&T principles, you'll notice that most of the world's best players and many of the high profile teachers use them.  They don't call it S&T, which I always thought was a bad name anyway.  Still, the basics work for almost everyone.

There are hundreds of YouTube videos on this. Saguto golf, Nick Taylor, Jess Frank & Eric Cogorno to name a few. The problem is most PGA Professionals don’t teach it. When you watch most PGA touring pros, they mostly follow the principals.

Played golf for over 50 years until my health and business calendar reduced my time to less then 5 rounds a year. Then 4 years ago I retired, changed my diet and lifestyle, lost 100 pounds and got back on the course. Its been a struggle but things are getting better.

revisiting the S&T philosophy

Feeling like its great for precise iron shots ,  very good for ball then turf hit as my prime purpose

I feel like a forward bump with my shoulders  gives a bit of weight shift to the lead foot to start of the swing  before weight goes back to my rear foot helps the rhythm of my swing

i tend to like having the weight on my rear foot at set up . I tried weight shift to the front foot by moving my head / hips but the forward press of my shoulder seem to work best for me

I have played with Mike Bennett a few times a year for the past 5 years.  Watching him hit balls, play and/or listening to his stories, you know he's the real deal.

I watched him get fitted for a driver three weeks ago and I swear he hit 50 balls in a row through a small hole in the sky.  I felt like I was watching Moe Norman or Ben Hogan, only he hit super-high bombs around 290+ yards at sea-level.

Recently, we played at a popular 72-hole resort in Palm Beach Gardens and staff instructors kept coming over to ask for swing advice in the middle of his round.  He is definitely a "Swing Whisperer" - he will take a video on his phone of someone's swing, show them what to change on the screen and then go back to his round. His style is quiet and simple.

I agree with Fubar, above, that Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer don't get enough credit for their contribution to modern teaching.  Most of their ideas are used by today's instructors, and kids are starting off with much better chances to be great players.  How would you like to have the pictured swing at age 15 or 16?  Mike and Andy have helped many PGA Tour players both directly and indirectly through other famous instructors using their "fundamentals" and you don't hear much about it.

Anyway, they never called their teaching by any name, but Golf Digest decided to call them Stack and Tilt.  Who knows if that name hurt or helped them.

Here's a link to a recent article on S&T: https://scoregolf.com/opinion/lorne-rubenstein/whatever-happened-to-stack-tilt-its-alive-and-thriving-say-its-originators/

Some Kid FO P9 .png

After retiring from the PGA of America, I did some demo days and club fitting for TaylorMade, Callaway, Titleist, Ping, Cobra, Srixon and Mizuno.
