Once a year golfer clubs

We all know those guys...the ones who play once or twice a year "with their boss" or "with their (insert relative here)"...

 

I know someone who is using clubs that were pulled out of a dumpster years ago and are 70's/80's blades that only a tiny percentage of us on here can use with some success....and this person plays 2-3 times per year!

 

what do you recommend they replace these antique sticks of metal with?

 

I was thinking something in the ping G series - maybe the 20/25 

or something by Callaway with generous offset.

maybe a G20 or G25 driver?

 

of course regular stock shafts would be fine.

Why replace them? Does the person even want to replace them? Do they want to ultimately play more?

 

 

If I was going to make a suggestion I would say looked at clubs in the 5-10 year old range that would provide more forgiveness. Playing that little with no intentions to play more doesn't warrant anything more than maybe a couple of hundred bucks for an entire set. I'd probably even look to some of the old component clubs in a used clubs store. A store local to me generally has those at bargain basement prices

Seriously, as cnosil said, do they even want to replace them if they are only going out 2-3 times a year and not looking to get better at the game ? If they wanted to replace them, a set of game improving irons from a few years ago would work like the pings you mentioned or mizuno jpx 800s.

I'd send the guy to the used rack at a local golf store. tons of clubs for cheap. find a set of SGI irons and a 460 driver.

I always steer guys like this towards the G series like you mention.

 

Anything Callaway from their pre owned site.

 

Lots of good options that would help make the game more enjoyable.

I've rented twice while traveling, with mixed results. The first time was great - a year old set of Callaway X2 Hots, proper shafts, etc. The last time was kind of brutal - the heads were all matching (some European model of forged Callaways that I had never heard of), but shafts were all over the place. Some were Sr flex, some stiff, with everything in between. I suppose of you only play a couple times a year, it doesn't really matter.

Cheap clubs on eBay, the used rack at the golf shop, or 2ndswing has some good prices on newer used equipment. I would get older Pings or Cobras. But all things considered, do they need new clubs? I think renting would be a great option. Name brand, newer clubs for $40 a year if you play twice. At this level shafts don't matter.

20 year old Big Berthas. Absolute shovels but super easy for a novice golfer to hit and can be had for under $100.

I would recommend the Adams Blue series.....they are cheap, available online and can fit almost anyone's handicap

Does anyone else remember these serving platters?

 

 

I recall an incredibly expensive price tag (pure titanium heads) and marketing directed at individuals that rarely played golf - this is a great example how Tiger moved the equipment needle across the industry, circa 1998.

I do remember them.

I've seen much worse, though.

 

Tommy Armour was the old "PGA" brand that sold very traditional clubs before becoming "Tommy Armour."

Funny, because MacGregor's Tommy Armour clubs were as classic as one could get.

I guess my first question would be does this guy see his clubs as an issue or are you simply acting on his behalf? Once a year is not worth the investment in new clubs or even almost new clubs. If he or you were to ask around I'm quit sure you could put together an updated set of gifted clubs.

I think the most basic question is what does the person want? Do they want to continue playing only once of twice a year, do they like playing with what they have? If the person played better would they play more than times a year? The answers would lead you to the options: stay with current set, rent, buy used SGI, etc.

Would honestly suggest just buying a boxed set to start, a Wilson or whatever, maybe replace the putter immediately and then slowly replace each item (Driver, wedges, fairways) as they improve. If they never really take up the game or put the time in, a boxed set is more than adequate.

I'd also say rent.. other than that, get a set of easy-to-play timeless classics. Plenty of people still play clubs like V Steel fairways, Adams hybrids, Eye2 irons/wedges, and Anser putters by choice, so something like that wouldn't look out of place in a sporadically played bag. All of them are relatively inexpensive too. Full bag could be $200 or less.
