gap management

Ivan

Recommended Posts

Have P790 set Aw-4 (DG300 shafts).. about 15-12yards carry gap per iron

AW (50*) hit 125

54* TM wedge (KBS Wedge shafts) hit 90

huge gap, wedge flex shaft the issue?

thoughts? should I get a 52* TM with (KBS Wedge Shaft) have it adjusted to 51* or 50*?

4* gapping is what I have (48, 52,56 & 60) and that works pretty well for me . Is the AW the same shaft?

That is a pretty big gap and I'm not real sure how I would fix it.  I would hate to waste a spot in my bag with a second 50*, but that may be the only solution. Either that, or try to put some different shafts in the 54 and see if you can get some added distance.

In my bag:

Callaway Epic Subzero with Aldila Rogue Max 75 Stiff shaft

Callaway Rogue Subzero with Project X Evenflow 6.0 75g stiff shaft

Callaway Rogue 3 Hybrid with Aldila Synergy 60 HYB stiff shaft

Callaway Apex irons (4-PW) with True Temper XP 95 stiff shafts

Callaway MD3 wedges (50/54/58)

We've seen this issue before - different clubhead shaft combo can make for a big yardage difference.

There are a couple of possible solutions. The simplest is (if you like your wedges other than the gapping) weakening your A wedge 2 and PW 1.

That should be a good starting point.

Could be shaft, possible 54 isn't at correct loft, might want to get that checked to make sure

This is one of the problems as you transition from set wedges to non set wedges. Trying to use degrees between clubs is no longer applicable and you need to look at distance and how you use the wedges. Can you add another club, can you replace clubs to have different lifts, can you use partial swings to fill the gaps.

I have the same problem with my set. My dilemma is that I use my 54 as a full swing club and as my club out of the sand so I can really effectively use less lift. I have gone to using partial swings with my gap wedge

P790 and almost all "designed like irons" gap wedges will have this problem when blending into specialty wedges. Personally I would have gotten a specialty wedge that was a little strong to merge the yardages better when moving over to actually wedges. The other option would be going to a club fitter who has a launch monitor and doing a gap test to see what loft the AW & 54 need to be bent to that provides you the easiest transition that also doesn't take away from how you like to use each of the clubs. It will sound goofy but wouldn't be surprised for you to end up with a 51* P790 and a 53* TM Wedge that provides you with a more manageable and more playable blend. But getting on a launch monitor with a club fitter will be where you find the best solution

I would bend the AW 1° or 2° weak and bend the 54° to 52° or 53°. Your best bet though is going to a launch monitor and fitter to get the gapping figure out.

I've got a 50° that I can make go 115-120, and then a 54° that usually gets me 100-105 depending on how jacked up I am.  I mean, my 58° goes 90 yards when I crank it up full, so your gapping between the 50° and 54° seems really off.

Did you have those distances verified on the launch monitor, or was this just from the course, where you assumed the distances you hit it over a period of time?

I have a set wedge at 50° that goes 125 and then a specialty wedge at 51° that goes 110. It is just a different construction but the gapping works well. I then go 51 to a 58 which goes 95. I don't play the high lofted lob wedge to save a spot for the 2 iron. But I also don't know what I could do with a 64° that I can't with a 58°. My 58 is pretty darn versatile.

I had this same issue. I had a set AP2 50* that went consistently 140-135. Was way too close to my PW that went 150-140 and too far from my 55* that goes 115-105. Replaced it with a Vokey SM7 50* and it has slid in nicely at 130-125

Interesting thought gb13 and dpatt... I think u have the answer for where to start

I'm not adjusting loft 790, the gap perfect to me and are consistent thru the set.

I will be getting a 52 w/KBS WEDGE flex and then replace/or adjust 58 to 56/57 and take out 54, that will leave a slot for course special club (hybrid, 5wd, driving iron, 2nd putter,... Or lighter bag)

I had a similar issue when I bought my P790's, only mine was from top to bottom. I have very unconventional loft spacing on my irons but over the course of playing with them for 10 months they work. I also was fitted for 1" over and have since trimmed them to only be 1/2" over. They are finally dialed in and gaping is perfect for me but it has definitely taking some time, and patience to get them where they needed to be. The new "distance" irons to me are great in that they do produce, however gaping is going to be an ongoing issue with the lofts they way they are. Especially towards the bottom of the bag.
