Tour Edge Exotics CBX Stage 1 by Jmikecpa

First off thank you to Tour Edge and MyGolfSpy for the opportunity to test a new weapon and it was a timely choice as I was in the market for a new fairway wood.  Over the past year I have lost over 100 lbs. and have been going through some swing and equipment struggles with the change in body type. Good news is that I have found my swing, bad news is that I am still at a healthy buffet weight.

Also, apologies in advance since I was not able to get any good unboxing photos; unfortunately.  I was on vacation when the club arrived and my neighbor did not grab it off the porch before it rained.  Cardboard and water do not make for a great unboxing experience.

So a bit about me and my game….

I have been married to my college sweetheart for almost 17 years and currently live on Long Island where we are raising our three children and a 145 lb. Great Dane.  My oldest is 12 and he has a love of the game so we are starting to play more together at our club and in some club events.  When I am not playing golf, I am the CFO of a publicly traded company that owns and develops casino resorts and most recently moved to the Catskill Mountains to open up a new resort.  Being away from the family for five days a week is not the best, but right now it pays the bills and beats my last gig where I was all over the globe.

I started playing the game 39 years ago at the ripe old age of 2 with my Grandparents and it just stuck. I grew up in the pre-Tiger era so golf was not cool at all.  I came from a baseball family and that was my first love growing up, but I was always beating golf balls when I had downtime.  I became fairly good at a quick pace and have been scratch or better since my mid-teens and still play off of scratch to a plus depending on the month.  I was fortunate to play a few seasons of college golf and played a full slate of tournament golf until my early 30's when I decided to focus more attention on my career and well having young children at home was not conducive to playing tournament golf.  These days I mostly play club events and a few other tournaments but not sure I have the drive to go beyond that despite the urging of my family.

My WITB has been a revolving door this year with trying to find equipment that is going to work for me as well as a somewhat new swing.  Currently I have essentially a Titleist bag from top to bottom and it has been working well the last month or so.  This was the bag that I was fit for last year and a few grand later I have a nice inventory of clubs in my basement since I went back to what I had.  Lesson learned and other than the putter this will be the bag for the remainder of the year.

Driver – Titleist 917 D3 9.5* HZRDUS Yellow 76g 6.5 (set to A1, neutral weight)

Fairway Wood – Titleist 917 F2 15* Diamana Blueboard 83x (set to A1, neutral weight)

Hybrid – Titleist 818 H2 19* Tensei CK Pro White 90x (set to D1, neutral weight)

Irons – Titleist 718 TMB 3 Kuro Kage TiNi 85s

            Titleist 716 TMB 4 – PW TTDG AMT S300

Wedges – Vokey SM7 52* (F) TTDG S300

                 Vokey SM6 58* (M) TTDG S300

Putter – Scotty Cameron Select Laguna 35”

The only club in this bag that is on the waiver wire was the fairway wood.  Just never had confidence in it, which just did not lead to quality golf shots.  The club that I play at is on the water on Long Island so I use a fairway wood and iron off the tee quite a bit depending on the wind direction.  I like to move the ball both ways with all of my clubs and prefer to hit a high draw when I can.  For the over 40 set I can still move the ball pretty well and have a smooth tempo with a lot of speed.  As my pro would say it works for me, but not a swing he would teach.

Unknown.jpeg

So now onto the club that I will be testing.  The specs that I ordered was the 15* CBX head with a HZRDUS Black 75g 6.5 shaft.  In full disclosure I did go to a fitter and hit the different combos that Tour Edge offers and this was the best fit for me on the data that we had.  One of my struggles with fairway woods over the years has been spin, mainly too much spin regardless of head or shaft.  I have worked hard over the last few seasons to work on getting spin down with some swing changes but don't shy away from technology from helping me out a bit. Based on the claims from Tour Edge this one seems that it could fit the bill with the claims of a low spin head along with a shaft that I know is low spin.

Low spin beast in the making!

CBX%20Sole.jpeg

Yet still some help on the bottom

One of the interesting things that I think Tour Edge is doing right now in terms of marketing is following what I will call the Adams model.  With the acquisition of Adams by TM it left a bit of a void for the fairway and hybrid market that it looks like Tour Edge is trying to fill; especially on the PGA Tour Champions.  I like what they are doing from a marketing standpoint and the product performs as it is in the bag of a lot of guys that are not paid to play the club.  Really the same thing that Adams did with a lot of success.

There has been somewhat of a cult following with Tour Edge for years that I have not caught onto and the main reason was shaft options.  I quite frankly had a hard time paying a premium price for a club with a shaft that was a “made for” or a watered-down version of the real shaft.  It seems that that has changed over the last few years so the brand now has my attention…..my full attention.  From a build quality, fit and finish as well as components this club really is just premium all the way.  Heck even the headcover is premium….but I am still partial to the one in my bag at the moment.

Unknown-4.jpeg

So now that you know about me and my game, how am I going to put this through its paces???

First off, it is going into my bag immediately.  My thought behind this is two-fold in that I don't get along with what I am playing and well the best way to test results is through real on course play.  That being said I also plan to get numbers off of my launch monitor as well to test against my Titleist 917 F2 and Callaway Epic Sub Zero.  This should give a good barometer of the spin claims as well as how it fairs against two of the big boys in the industry.

Tour Edge Exotics CBX Stage 2 by Jmikecpa

I would like to start my Stage 2 by again thanking MGS and Tour Edge for the opportunity to test the CBX fairway wood.  My initial plan for this test was to get some data on the LM and then decide if it was going in the bag.  Well, that went out the window after about four swings on the range and it went directly into the bag the day before qualifying for the club championship. Overall I have close to 20 range sessions in the books with the CBX and about another 20 rounds on the course with it in the bag.  I also had a few range sessions in this mix where I hit the CBX up against my Epic SZ and my Titleist 917 F2.

Since my Stage 1 I had a few changes in the bag which is just not like me at all.  Here is currently what is in the bag including a new bag as well.

IMG_0859.jpeg

Now onto the fun part and let's see how it stacked up against the competition.

Looks

In a word….mean.  This club is just flat murdered out with the black head and the black shaft which just inspires confidence at address.  The head is a nice classic shape with a clean crown; which I really liked a lot.  The little visible bit of the carbon on the sole was a really nice touch and gave it a real premium look.  Also, when you look at the bottom the sole just lets you know there is help to get it up in the air.  Overall the package is just tight looking and much more appealing to me than some of the other offerings on the market.  Really the only club that visually appealed to me more was Big Berth Alpha line with the matte black crown and zero alignment aid.

Sound and Feel

This is a bit of an odd category for me based on how I thought it should sound based on the specs. I had thought with a titanium face it would be a more high-pitched ting when in fact it is more of a loud thwack. The acoustics on this are very pleasing and the sound matches the feel quite well.  The feel off the face is just solid when it is well struck.  I little off the toe or heel and it is very apparent in the feel, almost a bit harsh feeling.  The one aspect that I didn't enjoy with this club was the shaft. The HZRDUS black is a very stout shaft and at times can produce a harsh feel at times.  This is not an issue with the club just a preference on my part and also a reminder that proper fitting is key.  I hit balls indoors with the CBX line before I gave my order for this club and fell in love with the numbers and did not pay enough attention to feel.

Basic Characteristics

The Contestants

IMG_0853.jpeg

The first thing I did when I got the club in was get in a few range sessions with two of them on Trackman at my club.  I tested this club against the 917 F2 at 15* with an Oban Devotion 7 06 and also against a Callaway Epic Sub Zero 13.5* with a Tour AD GT 8x.  The weight in the 917 was a 14g neutral weight and the weights in the SZ had the heavy weight forward.  Unfortunately, I was not able to get the screen shots of the data but will was able to take notes and in summary the CBX was the longest and the lowest spin of the three.  So yes, the claims by Tour Edge were true for me but not by a wide margin.  My gamer three wood is the Epic SZ and the CBX spun on average 150 rpms less and was about 2 yards longer in carry distance. Compared to the 917f it really was no contest with both of the low spin models consistently beating it for raw distance and the 917f leading the way in overall dispersion.

From an accuracy standpoint the CBX is deadly if you middle it and was a lot more punishing to me on mishits.  One aspect for me that is important is a ball holding its line in the wind and the CBX was up to the challenge.  Good strikes produced a mid ball flight that stayed fairly flat and on line in the wind. Again, a little bit of a mishit and the shot was not very controllable.  Compared to both the SZ and 917f this was easily the least forgiving of the three but when I was swinging well it was an asset in the bag.

The one main aspect that I thought that could be a struggle was hitting this club off the deck which proved to be no issue at all.  Tight fairway lies were not challenging at all and get a slight flyer lie and you are hitting career shots.  One shot that I really enjoy hitting is to thump the tee box with the head and give it a good rip off the deck from the tee.  Of the three fairway woods this was the shining star from the tee box.

On Course Performance

As I stated earlier I had about 20 rounds of testing with this club with most of the rounds at my home club.  My home club is a mix of links and parkland with a lot of wind, I mean a lot of wind. In my round I normally hit two three woods of the deck into par 5s and there are two or three tee shots that 3 wood is the play.  Overall, I thought the CBX was solid off the tee and really had no issues with confidence in pulling it out of the bag.  In a few of the rounds I was just out practicing and hit tee shots with the CBX and the SZ on several holes and on the course the CBX had it beat by 4-6 yards. Numbers that on a launch monitor make you want to pull out the wallet and take this club home.  In reality it meant the difference in a stock PW or 9 iron and the same club with a bit taken off of it.

The one area that the CBX did not really tick the box for me was on workability.  I have three stock shots that I hit with a fairway wood and the CBX only gave me the ability to hit two.  The stock swing with a nice high cut….check.  Low fairway finder cut…..check.  Hard going draw that runs like heck……nope.  I had a really hard time being able to turn the ball over with the CBX which is not something that I struggle with in any fairway.  Actually most times I have to fear my miss being a low hook if I get too quick.  In the case of the CBX most times that I tried to hit the hard draw it was not pretty at all.  To be fair to Tour Edge I don't think this really was the club but more of the shaft and having a hard time being able to feel the club head.  If I was able to swap out the shaft in my gamer I would not have had this issue at all is what I would suspect.

If I can't load the shaft with this much lag then it just is not for me

IMG_6646.jpeg

A few final thoughts…

  • Pressure – Not really applicable with this club. If I have to hit a pressure shot then 3 wood will not be in my hands.  That goes for any 3 wood that I own or will ever own.

  • What factors were you pleased with?

Off the tee this club is a beast and just loved hitting 3 wood well past most of the guy's drivers.

  • What factors did you find lacking?

Workability was an issue more from the shaft than the overall club.

  • Overall, how did it perform?

The CBX was a good performer for me just not better than what I had in the bag at the time.  I think with a shaft change and some more range time this could really be a winner for me.

  • Did it help improve your scores?

Let's just say it didn't hurt my scores.  The shots I normally hit with a fairway wood are low risk and safety shots and the CBX hit those shots with ease.

  • How, if at all, did this product change your overall impression of Tour Edge?

This really is a premium product that matches the price tag.  The overall build quality, fit and finish make this club worth the extra $50 over other brands in the premium space.

  • What feature would you change or eliminate from the next generation of this model?

The bonded hosel is a deal breaker for a lot of people at this price point. I personally like the ability to change the loft on my woods and hybrids.  I just went through some drastic swing changes and it made me have to change the loft on my driver and 3 wood to get the launch and spin back in line. I would also like to see the stock shaft offerings expanded to match that of other brands at this price point.

Play it or Trade it

Right now the answer is neither.  I am going to have the shaft pulled and get fit for something that more fits my game a bit better.  Out of the three shafts that were available stock this was the best fit and really it was square peg in a round hole.

Conclusion

This is really a solid stick with a lot of great features that bring modern tech to a fairway wood. I tend to have a fragile state of mind when it comes to fairway woods so having a few stock shots are key for me and my game.  When I don't have one of the three shots in the bag that makes keeping a fairway wood in the bag very difficult.  That being said the club is just flat out solid and something with the right fit I can see putting in the bag for a long time.  I buy a lot of gear but when it comes to a fairway wood that I like it stays in the bag.  I played a Ping TiSi for close to a decade and before that I had a TM V Steel that was in the bag for years….the CBX has that potential.  The CBX is deserving of the Most Wanted award that it received and I just need to unlock the club's full potential.

Tour Edge Exotics CBX 3 Wood – Official MGS Forum Review by jayjay0808

Intro

Hey everyone, from the wet Pacific Northwest! I wanted to start by first thanking MyGolfSpy for giving the three of us this great opportunity to review some of the best ranked fairway wood of 2018. As well I want to thank every member on here that ends up reading this and getting involved by asking questions about our test drive of the Tour Edge CBX Fairway wood. I truly believe opportunities like this is what makes MyGolfSpy the best golf forum on the internet.

With all of that out of the way let me give you guys a snapshot of who I am, what type of golfer, and what my expectations for the CBX Fairway Wood may be.

The Personal Questions

·         What's your story?

o    My name is John-James (I much prefer JJ) and I am a 29 year old account manager based in Blaine, WA. I grew up in Vancouver but my company has an office in both cities and I commute between the two. Growing up my main passion was wrestling. Thankfully my wrestling coach in high school suckered me into playing golf when I was 16. I had numerous offers to wrestle in college in the US. Sadly in my senior year of high school I tore both my MCL and ACL, and was told I would never be able to wrestle competitively again.

After recovering and starting university in Vancouver I was looking for something to fill that competitive void left from wrestling. Long story short I walked onto the university golf team and played 4 years there before graduating. I worked in the golf industry for over 7 years and loved every single moment of it, but as many know unless you are the top of the industry it is hard to make a living. So I left the industry to focus on my career. Therefore I don't play as often as I would like, sometimes I can shoot 67 and others 97, the true story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

After getting out of university like most people who get office jobs I went from 180lbs to 235lbs at my heaviest. My golf game suffered greatly during that time. Then about 5 years ago I was on a business trip in Austin Texas and picked up a virus that swelled my throat shut to where it was hard to breath and I could not even drink water. I was hospitalized for 30 days and went from that 235lbs to 138lbs in hospital. I did not have solid food for nearly two months. For the last 5 years I have worked on getting into better shape and adding muscle. I am now a comfortable 165. The last few years has been a struggle trying to reconstruct my swing for a new body shape. I enjoy playing matches with good friends trying to take their money.

·         What region do you play out of?

  • I am lucky enough to work for a company that is based in Washington State and British Columbia. So depending on where I am for the time I play out of North Bellingham Golf Course, Shuksan Golf Course, Sudden Valley, Pitt Meadows, Meadow Gardens, or Westwood Plateau.

·         Describe the home course(s) you play

  • My home courses are quite the mix, I play everything from a true links course, to a parkland course, and mountain course. That is really the benefit of playing in the Pacific Northwest.

·         How long have you been golfing?

  • I have been lucky enough to play this game since I was 14 years old. The story of how I got into the game is quite funny. My main sport in high school was actually wrestling, sadly the golf team was suffering for participants. Luckily my wrestling coach was also the golf coach and suckered me into trying out. I played a couple 9 hole rounds and fell in love with the game.

·         What kind of golfer are you?

  • I would describe myself as a past glory golfer. I played a lot in high school that allowed me to play the game throughout college. The most annoying thing with that is that you expect yourself o play a lot better than you put the time in for. I have a wide spectrum of what I can shoot, if my timing is slightly off I can shoot a high score and yet if I am on I can make the game look so easily. I truly have to temper my expectations but because I played the game at a certain level previously it is hard to get past that.

·         What makes you love the game?

  • What I love most about the game of golf is how unpredictable it is. No round will ever be the same, the score may look alike but the journey to get to that score is not the same. On top of that all of the different designs of the golf courses makes me love the game. Every course has its own beauty and uniqueness, that is what makes every round special.

The Golf Questions

·         What is in your bag (and how did you choose them)?

o    Driver: Currently right now I have a Tour Edge E8 Beta Driver, shafted with a Tour X-Stiff prototype Project X M66 Shaft which was a great find off of ebay set to 8.5 loft

o    Fairway Wood: In my bag is a Tour Edge E8 Tour shafted with a Accra Dymatch S2 M5. As this is adjustable I have the head set to 14 degrees of loft. This is one of my favorite clubs in the bag as I can hit it from everywhere, whether it is the tee, fairway, or first cut. This fairway wood gives me a great mix of distance and workability. It is the first Tour Edge wood I have owned and I can see why they are known for them

o    Hybrid: Since High school I have always been an Adams Hybrid fan, because of that I have an 18 degree Adams Red Hybrid shafted with the stock X-Stiff Matrix Atlus shaft.

o    Irons: This has been the biggest change for me this year, previously I was playing a set of JPX 900 Tour irons, the last two months I have been playing around with Cobra King Forged One irons. Even though there was an adjustment period I have found this to be one of the most beneficial changes in my golf game.

o    Wedges: My Wedges are Cleveland RTX 3 52 and 58 wedges. I was lucky enough to be selected for the Cleveland test and these will not come out of my bag.

o    Putter: I recently switched to a Seemore PTM 2 putter, my thinking behind this switch was the fact I struggled with getting lined up correctly over my line.

·         Handicap? (Or average score)

  • My current handicap is a +1.7. I don't find this to be completely accurate as my high scores are usually kicked out.

·         Swing tempo?

  • Many would say that I have one of the quickest and violent tempos around. That makes my timing especially important and causes me to get wayward quite a bit.

·         Typical ball flight?

  • My typical ball flight would be a very high draw.

·         Typical miss?

  • Due to the fact I tend to try to play a draw my miss is to get the club behind me causing me to hit a big push or snap hook. Sadly my miss can be both ways. I am trying hard to make the miss more consistent but it will take time.

·         Strengths/Weaknesses of your game?

  • My strength in my golf game has not really changed since college. I am known to be a fantastic ball striker that allows me to hit a lot of greens in regulation. This gives me many opportunities to make birdies. My weakness could also be the fact that I do hit a lot of greens leaving me with a large proximity to the hole. This puts pressure on my putting as even when you hit it inside 15 feet I start to stress about missing a makeable putt.

First Impressions

IMG_0646.JPG

When first receiving the Tour Edge CBX the first thing that stood out to me is the shipping label from Tour Edge… As much as the other big golf forum would love to see this, maybe next time the can label it with MyGolfSpy :P

Now for the actual club. I have a history with Tour Edge golf clubs, they have always fit my eye. I find all of them sit very square if not open. The CBX to me sits exactly the way I would expect it, as I ordered the 13.5 degree head, to me it looks slightly open. You the readers can be the judges. The one thing that I wish would be changed, as I have grown accustom to matte finishes on my woods over the years, I wish Tour Edge would have continued with a matte finish on the CBX. This is something I can happily live with however.

IMG_0712.JPG

IMG_0713.JPG

IMG_0714.JPG

The big difference I have found between the E8 Tour I currently have in the bag compared to the CBX is that the CBX has a Beta titanium cup face. The E8 Tour had a standard steel face, the Beta Titanium face is stronger and thinner which would usually translate to faster and longer strikes.

IMG_0715.JPG

I came into this test with a good history with Tour Edge. They are known for their fairway woods, ever since the original CB fairway wood. They started off as a cult classic but as they became more popular they started to get some play on tour even though they don't pay players.

I asked to be set up with a 13.5 degree head, I battled the idea of going up to a 15 but to give an accurate comparison as I have a 14 in my current 3 wood I thought this would reflect more accurately the advance Tour Edge has made. I was happy to select the Project X Hzrdus Yellow, as my current driver shaft players extremely close to the Hzrdus Black. The Yellow I am hoping will give me a higher launch off the deck while still taking off some of the spin which I fight from time to time.

Teaser

I believe this test is going to be very interesting for the readers of MyGolfSpy. I hope it confirms that newer clubs do provide better performance to consumers due to technological advances. I was thinking about writing a long teaser here, but as they say a picture is worth a thousand words. In this picture one drive was hit with my current gamer and the other with my new Tour Edge CBX… The results may surprise you.

Stage Two – Tour Edge CBX Fairway – Official MGS Forum Review by JayJay0808

Intro

I know this is going to sound extremely repetitive, but thank you again to MGS for providing us with the opportunity to test Tour Edge's New CBX Fairway wood. For my Stage 2 I have spent the last few weeks working on my game extremely hard to get ready for my winter travel to hotter destinations other than the Pacific Northwest. The Tour Edge CBX has been put through a great deal of repetitions on the range and course.

Looks

  • General Shape: For me since I came from playing Tour Edge's E8 Tour found this to be very much in line with what I have seen from Tour Edge before. I will say that that shape reminds me more of the older CB2 and CB4 fairway woods than the E8 which I think is slightly more rounded. This is definitely a compliment as the two I named are some of the best fairway woods produced.
  • Graphics: This is what puts me off from a lot of the larger OEM in the golf industry. They think that flashy sells. I have to say the simple graphics of the CBX makes it much more attractive to me when in the bag or up against the ball.
  • How does the overall look come together? I love the all black with a hint of red in the club. Pairing it up with the matte finish of the Hzrdus really brings it all together.
  • How does the appearance compare to other clubs in the same category? To me the look of the fairway wood is understated compared to the other woods out at this time. And don't take that the wrong way, I think woods and drivers now try to sell on flash. This fairway wood screams player, and serious contender
  • Other unique details (i.e. alignment aids, coloring, blur, etc.) I may be in the minority here but I love a fairway wood that doesn't have an alignment aid, just makes it look more old school to me.

(10 out of 10 points)

Sound & Feel

  • Does it sound: loud, quiet, harsh, or smooth? To me the CBX sounds like the majority of Tour Edge woods I have hit throughout my golfing life, they sound smooth when hit in the middle of the face. But when you miss it you can tell by the sound which is much more higher pitched and harsh
  • Compare the sound to something non-golf. When I could put a good swing on this 3 wood the sound reminded me of a hammer driving a nail in to a solid 2x4. Slightly satisfying
  • Does it feel soft, crisp, dull, clunky? As with my previous experiences with Tour Edge this wood feels so crisp. I don't know whether it is due to the fact that the shape is slightly deeper.
  • Does it feel consistent across the face, or are mis-hits noticeably pronounced? When I did miss the center of the face, and we all know that happens quite a bit, it did feel slightly muted and not that solid smack.
  • Compare to your best/worst feel and sound experiences? The best feel I had with this wood so far was an early morning round at Shuksan in Washington State. I teed off of 4 which is a 541 yard par 4. I hit a mediocre drive and had a good distance into the green. There was just that slight bit of dew on the first cut. I put the first good swing of the day and put it to a solid 18 feet in two. It was so quiet out but when I made contact it was music to my ears. The worst experience I had was at Pumpkin ridge Ghost Creek, short par 4 and I was playing for position off the tee. Absolutely caught it toeish and saw that thing take off into the woods left. Sounded clunky, but really it was me not the club.
  • Do these subjective characteristics impact your mental game? I think the sound and feel plays less of a role in the mental game than let's say the look of the club. If it was irons then I would say yes, but a wood is a much different story.

(9 out of 10 points)

Basic Characteristics

  • Accuracy –For the majority of my golfing career I have always been a strong ball striker. I found I was able to consistently play my high draw with the CBX, but I didn't see anything that made it more accurate than my E8 Tour or even old school PT13
  • Distance –This is where the CBX was noticeably different. Even over the Tour E8 Tour I had ono the range I saw a large amount of difference when it came to distance. I think this would be due to the fact that I am usually a high spin player, and the goal of the CBX is to kill spin.
  • Trajectory – Even though I had mentioned previously that the CBX is promoted as a spin killer my trajectory was still high even off the deck. It just seemed to carry longer without ballooning
  • Forgiveness – Over my Tour Edge E8 Tour I would say that the CBX was a tad more forgiving. I wouldn't say it was game changing but noticeable. Compared to misses on the heel or toe, I found the toe to keep up closer to well struck balls more than heel strikes. I think that is due in part to the toe typically will impart more draw spin which is my typical shot shape.
  • Control – Again this CBX is promoted to kill spin. However, when you hear pros talk about stopping a ball on the green with a wood, hybrid, iron, or wedge they will say they can do it with spin or trajectory. I found this wood to launch nice and high and was able to stop it on greens when going for a par 5 in two.
  • Workability –This is where I have the most fun testing out clubs on the range. When I am on course I tend to stick to my right to left shot shape heavily. When fooling around on the range I was able to work the ball both ways with the CBX, which I think at a 13.5 loft has to do with it sitting what looks like to me square or slightly open. Way too many woods on the market now sit too closed for my eye. The other way I like to fool around with workability is with height. My favorite shot I found with this wood is to choke down an inch and play it center of my stance. This lowered the trajectory significantly, but the ball would still fly a significant distance and run out. Maybe something to start playing a little more on course?
  • Adjustability – What I love about the CBX is the fact that the head is actually fixed and not adjustable. My old Tour Edge E8 Tour had an adjustable hosel and I set it to 14* the day I received it and never altered it. I believe that if you have the right loft off the bat a fixed head will always feel more solid than an adjustable.
  • Playability –The CBX truly shines off the tee, as I had said earlier it seems to be a deeper head shape than other woods on the market. Even deeper than my Tour Edge E8 Tour. I myself love hitting fairway woods off the deck going for par 5's in two. I think that the so called speed ramp sole does play a large role in the turf interaction from the fairway and rough. I was able to play the CBX very easily off the deck, first cut, or rough (lie allowing). I was never able to try the Tour Edge woods that featured the rippled soles, but my Tour Edge E8 Tour was much more generic and had trouble hitting shots out of anything other than a clean lie. When it comes to uneven lies, I don't believe a club can make you better, it comes down to technique and knowledge of how to play the shot. With that being said, I found no difference in playing from different slopes and uneven lies compared to my E8 Tour

(16 out of 20 points)

On-Course Performance

  • Pressure – For me the toughest shot with a 3 wood under pressure is when you take it off a tee that you can hit driver on in order to make sure you hit a fairway. I have always had trouble playing aggressively cautious. The CBX is a monster off the tee and when hit well I was able to keep within a few yards of my driver with a more consistent shot shape and confidence.
  • What factors were you pleased with? I was surprised to find the distance factor was much improved over an couple year older fairway wood from the same OEM. Tour Edge has always boasted to be some of the longest woods in the world and the CBX only continues that legacy. However, what was just as impressive was the ease I found in hitting this wood from all situations, usually when a fairway wood is deeper shaped the off the deck shots become a lot harder. That was not the case with the CBX, extremely easy to hit high and go for greens in two.
  • What factors did you find lacking? This will probably sound like I am just a fanboy but there is not one thing I found lacking with the CBX. Truly a fantastic wood and deserving of its MGS ranking.
  • Overall, how did it perform? The CBX came exactly as advertised and following in the footsteps of many Tour Edge woods before it as one of the longest best performing woods on the market. Again for me a fairway wood has to be able to perform in all situations. It didn't matter if this was off the tee, fairway, or rough. If I put a good swing on the ball the club did exactly what I was expecting it to do. I was able to hit different shots on course, and the new low stinger that I mentioned previously has become a staple not only off the tee for control but off the deck to attack pins with an open front green.
  • Did it help improve your scores? I don't know if I can say it helped improve my scores. I am slightly better than a scratch player so to improve one shot around is a big ask. I think if over long period of time I could see an improvement of ½ shot per round, which would be dramatic for me.
  • How, if at all, did this product change your overall impression of [brand]? I have always had a great deal of respect for Tour Edge as they have flown under the radar for many years, even though they have produced what I believe are some of the best woods out there. I think more so than change my impression, I think it more reinforced my impression of Tour Edge.
  • What feature would you change or eliminate from the next generation of this model? I thought long and hard about this one, and again I will say I must sound like a fanboy but there is not a single thing I would change. I know that in a year or two they will release a new model and it will probably be improved via small tweaks.
  • What feature do you really like, and would most like to see continued or evolved in future models? I really loved the speed ramp sole for turf interaction and hope they continue that as it allowed to play the CBX from all different areas. As well the carbon sole I could tell helped to take spin off of shots to eliminate the ballooning on full swings.

(36 out of 40 points)

Play it or Trade it?

The main complaint for people was the price tag of their Exotics line. The CBX is not the cheapest option on the market, nor is it the most expensive option. It is made of top tier materials, comes with a fantastic stock shaft and looks gorgeous. I play a large amount of amateur tournaments throughout the year and if a product is not better than what I am currently play I will not play it. With that said, the CBX is by far a superior wood in comparison to my Tour Edge E8 Tour. The new found distance not just off the tee but off the fairway is welcomed. As well as the added versatility with the speed ramp sole. When I step on to the first tee the CBX is going to be sitting in the bag just waiting to be swung when the pressure is on.

(20 out of 20 points)

Conclusion

The legacy since the Tour Edge Exotics line was first released was high quality products that out performed everything else on the market. People started to take notice with the CB fairway wood and then the generations to follow after the original. Putting titanium into a fairway wood was practically unheard of especially at a time when some lower end drivers still didn't incorporate titanium. Now in 2018 we have the new CBX fairway wood from Tour Edge and it follows in the footsteps of every other Tour Edge wood released. It is extremely long thanks to the mixture of the materials in the head. But the added versatility with the refined shape of the head and sole only makes the CBX a bigger weapon for golfers. I think these are only some of the reasons why the CBX is taking the Champions Tour by storm. I found the CBX to be fairly forgiving, but not anything eye opening. It is because of that reason that due to the low spin design of the head that this would be best suited to a high swing speed player that makes consistent impact, that is who will find the most joy out of hitting the CBX.

Once again thank you to MGS and all of the other spies on here that interactive in these forums which gives us lucky testers the opportunity to put great products through their paces.

After 18 holes I was tired, demoralized and beat down by this game lol. I carded a 110 and one of the old guys tried to cheer me up by telling me that wasn't too bad for my first time. A few years later I advanced to my first real set of clubs, the Callaway X series driver and woods and the x-18 irons (my son now has these minus the woods) I started playing better and even won my flight in the city publink tournament. I then found my current league The GolfNuts. Playing competitive rounds every week with those guys has helped me to lower my score to mid to low 80's on a regular basis. Stage Two - [Exotics CBX FW 3 Wood] – Official MGS Forum Review by [bigtazzGOLF]

Let me start out and say thank you to MGS and Tour Edge for the chance to test this club for them. It was a great pleasure.

I didn't get as much range time as I usually get lately (work and rain hurt). So most of my stage 2 review will be based on real time play. Which let's be honest, we are all scratch on the range right lol

Looks

  • General Shape; typical 3 wood shape in my opinion
  • Graphics; the graphics were spot on and everyone who checked it out during my rounds would comment on how sharp it looked (if you haven't seen the tour bag that matches it, check it out here, http://www.touredgestore.com/exotics-staff-bag/.
  • How does the overall look come together; one word, wonderful. I love the simple color scheme
  • How does the appearance compare to other clubs in the same category; I think it is similar to other woods in looks and appearance.
(9 out of 10 points)

Sound & Feel

  • Does it sound: loud, quiet, harsh, or smooth? This club sounds very smooth on center hits and as expected, it has a different sound on off center hits.
  • Compare the sound to something non-golf. Not sure what would compare other than it is a typical sound I hear from my other woods. Nothing odd or sour to the ear.
  • Does it feel soft, crisp, dull, clunky? I would answer crisp both from off a tee and off the ground.
  • Does it feel consistent across the face, or are mis-hits noticeably pronounced? They are noticeable.
  • Compare to your best/worst feel and sound experiences? The sound and feel, fall in line with my other woods, nothing really stood out as far as one way or the other
  • Do these subjective characteristics impact your mental game? HA not in the least!
(8 out of 10 points)

Basic Characteristics

  • Accuracy – Are you able to consistently hit your target? Yes, beautiful controlled fade every time.
  • Distance – Raw distance regardless of direction; able to reach my max of 255 with this club and able to maintain a consistent distance in the 235 range with no excess effort
  • Trajectory – High, low, or somewhere in between? My ball flight was in the middle, which I loved
  • Forgiveness – Compare toe, heel, high, or low hits to a dead center hit; sweet spots hits are wonderful and always produce max distance, mis-hits either tow or heel are noticeable in distance and feel of the club at impact.
  • Control – Is it difficult to hit your target or does it come easily? Can you stop it on a green? Yes to me this club was easy to control and stopping power on a green is still a work in progress for me
  • Work-ability – Can you change your shot shape if required? Sadly no, I was able to hit a consistent fade. Drawing the ball isn't the clubs fault, but I can say it can snap hook a ball as good as any of my woods.
  • Adjust-ability – Can you easily change the head settings to improve your day-to-day flight? No. This was something I both looked forward to then disappointed in not being able to adjust it.
  • Play-ability – Tee vs Fairway vs Rough vs Slopes of all angles; this club performed great for me in any situations I would stick it in. Lately having to use it to punch low stingers that would run 100-130 yds was no trouble at all
(16 out of 20 points)

On-Course Performance

  • Pressure – When you step up to a difficult shot with something on the line (money, best score, danger on all sides) can you execute the shot you need to put yourself in position? Yes without a doubt. Gaining confidence with this club came easy for me for some reason.
  • What factors were you pleased with? Color scheme and performance
  • What factors did you find lacking? Call me spoiled, but wanting to adjust the club was missed.
  • Overall, how did it perform? Great
  • Did it help improve your scores? I do believe it did. When my driver was sick, I had no trouble teeing off with this club as I knew it would get the job done.
  • How, if at all, did this product change your overall impression of Tour Edge? This was my first Tour Edge club to ever try and honestly it opened my eyes and gave me, more perspective to this company and the quality products they offer.
  • What feature would you change or eliminate from the next generation of this model? Add the ability to adjust the head and switch shafts.
  • What feature do you really like, and would most like to see continued or evolved in future models? I really loved the color scheme and the look of the club.

(33 out of 40 points)

Play it or Trade it?

I am going to continue playing this club and put the GBB in the garage for safe keeping.

I think this club is for any skill level; it is easy to use and swings smooth.

(17 out of 20 points)

Conclusion

In conclusion, I would tell anyone looking for a new club to look at Tour Edge and give their products a demo before buying. If the rest of their line is as nice as this 3 wood, I may be revolting from my Cally homerism and getting a new home

Tour Edge Exotics CBX Stage 1 by Jmikecpa

So now that you know about me and my game, how am I going to put this through its paces???

First off, it is going into my bag immediately.  My thought behind this is two-fold in that I don't get along with what I am playing and well the best way to test results is through real on course play.  That being said I also plan to get numbers off of my launch monitor as well to test against my Titleist 917 F2 and Callaway Epic Sub Zero.  This should give a good barometer of the spin claims as well as how it fairs against two of the big boys in the industry.

Awesome job on your stage one and weight loss!  Also I'm impressed with your taking time with your son to learn the game.   Good stuff all around!  Enjoy your testing and looking forward to stage 2.

Great start, guys! It would take a lot to displace the old Callaway RAZR Fit from my bag, but this certainly has the potential. Very interested in the rest of the story.

Great start from all of the testers and I like that there is a great variety of three woods going up against the CBX woods. This should be very interesting indeed!!

This is what I found to be the interesting part, you have the view of two of the big OEM versus one of the smaller manufacturers as well as what does a couple years equate to in differences in product from the same manufacturer

I was able to hit this club about a month ago in a HZRDUS Yellow 75g 6.5 shaft.  That is the exact same set up as my F8 fairway wood.  I found that when you hit it out of the center, it's a monster!  If you miss hit it though, you were really punished.  I'm curious if you guys are seeing the same.
