In St Andrews, leave the golf tourists behind and have a pint (or more) at the Whey Pat west of the old city gate in South Street, or at the Cross Keys in Market Street.  The Whey Pat had a selection of hand-pumped cask ales when I was there a few years ago.  Have a nice curry at Jahangir in South Street.  In the morning before you play, get a bacon roll at Munch, inside the City Gate in South Street, to take with you for a lunch/snack.

In Prestwick, have a pint at the Red Lion pub, where the plans for the very first Open Championship were hatched.

Somewhere along the way, be sure to at least try haggis, black pudding, and kippers for breakfast.

Most of all, have a great time!

I was looking at this, I hope you have a driver!  Three rounds around St Andrews, fine, then 3 hours up to Nairn, 3 hours back to Carnoustie. Then its around 2 hours to Western Gailes and Troon, backtracking  an hour and a half each way to Gleneagles, before finishing up at Prestwick and Turnberry.  Oy!!  How many days are you there, and where are you staying?

Enjoyed the Glenmorangie tour and tasting. My family is from the Northern Highlands. Drove from invergordon to tongue. Awesome drive through the north. Lots of small B and Bs on the way for a pint or two. Loved Royal Dornoch. Worth playing.

If you are going to do the Royal Troon and Western Gailes area then drive for 30 mins up the A77 and head for Eaglesham and play Bonnyton G.C.  It's an Alistair McKenzie Course and you'll see a few Augusta traits.  Not long but well worth the trip and probably 50%, at least, cheaper than any of the others you mentioned

That's a hell of an itinerary!!!

Not really a hidden gem, but I really enjoyed North Berwick when I was there. It's a great golf course that's really fun to play. You can take the train from Edinburgh to North Berwick, and from there it's an easy 5 minute walk to the golf course. It's a real seaside links course -- and make sure to splurge on a caddy there. See if you can get John ( I forget his last name) - he's an older dude but an excellent caddy and excellent company.

Enjoy!!!

When in St Andrews, go to the Jigger and the Dunvagen, lots of cool pictures in there to have a look at.

Playing Gleneagles myself at the start of September, really looking forward to it.

Kwoodfield,

When do you leave on this epic trip?  I've played about half the courses you listed - you will undoubtedly enjoy them all, for different reasons.

While in St. Andrews, if you have time to add Crail that is worth a visit.  And the patio outside the Jigger, leaning up against the wall along 17 of the Old Course, is a once in a lifetime experience.  You almost have to pinch yourself that you are there.

Dinner at Forgan's in town is a must.  Go with an open mind.  The deep fried haggis balls with a dram of scotch are incredibly good.

I would be curious to hear what some of your takeaways are from the trip, once complete.

I am now planning another trip in 2020 to St. Andrews and Carnoustie, but will also include Cruden Bay and Royal Dornoch.  So many great places to choose from.

Stick to ScotRail, if you can, as opposed to renting a car.

Santa

Hi ALFRIDAY101

I live in Fife scotland only 12 miles from St Andrews.
Born in London moved up 5 years ago, wife's family here, not necessarily for the golf but an added bonus.

Some Courses you may want to look at : although there are many more....
Royal Dornach 9.9/10 wonderful course.....
Trump International Aberdeen 9.5/10 (3-4 years)
Mussleburgh - arguably the old course in Scotland? 9.5/10
Castle Course (St Andrews) 9/10
Dukes Course (St Andrews) 9/10

One of my favorite courses in the world is in the small town of Stonehaven, just a little north of St. Andrews.  14 of the 18 holes are on a cliff looking over the ocean.  The other 4 "inland" holes are accessed by walking under a train bridge that looks like it came from a Harry Potter movie.  Not long but certainly not easy, quite hilly, and the wind can certainly be a factor.  A small cemetery and chapel ruins are just off the 18th green.  The first green is on a small peninsula that sticks out over the ocean, and the second tee shot is back over onto the "mainland".  The first hole as a grass bunker in the fairway they call "Hitler's bunker", as it's a WWII bomb crater where the bomb missed the town and hit the course.  As much charm as you could ask for, a real Scottish cliffside course experience, and the people are so small-town friendly it hurts.  40 pounds to play it, and 45 pounds for a day pass.  Wonderful experience all around.

Got to go to St. Andrews.  Played on all three courses.  The Old, New and Castle.  Had the best time of my life playing on courses that have so much history.  You would love playing any of the three.

I have played most of the courses he listed and have to say that Gleneagles was the hardest for me. Maybe it was the wind blowing 30+ mph, rain and cold too, but that's golf in Scotland.

Jerry,

Is it feasible to get from Edingurgh and play Carnoustie, Royal Aberdeen, Cruden Bay, Trump International, Castle Stuart, and Royal Dornoch without renting a car?  I notice that the Scottish rail/bus system goes to locations that are very near the course.  I'm just not sure whether taking clubs/luggage on the bus/trains is a huge pain in the bum.  Your thoughts?

Thanks,

Pat

If I remember right, there are 6 courses at St Andrews, you missed out on the Jubilee Course (very strong and tough, right next to the New), Eden (Harry Colt design, if I remember right), and a shorter one out past the Eden.  But I agree, a first-timer would do well to go to St Andrews and stay there.  Its a great town, with at least two dozen really good golf courses within a reasonable drive.

They were the three that I played on.  My wife and I had to go back to London.  Just loved Edinburgh.  Great pubs.

Just tweaking you a bit, but others may not realize the huge number of courses in that area, or even the number of courses under the St Andrews umbrella.  Or even the number of brilliant pubs in St Andrews, way beyond Herb Kohler's Jigger Inn, and the Texan-owned Dunvegan.  Both are lovely places, but there are others I like even better.
