2018 Ryder Cup Talk, and Captain Pick Choices

Just bringing the facts to a debate that is seemingly driven around emotion around this kid, Shanks. That's all.

I'm not disagreeing. He's got some talent. And probably puts way too much stress on himself. I could care less how he swings the club, or his quirks... If he is a fit for the team awesome, if not no big deal, try again in 2 years.

I would NOT put Phil on the team. He'd serve, just like Tiger did last time, as Vice Captain. I like Schauffele as he's calm, cool, even-keeled. Finau's putting is suspect at times. Kisner's been good as of late.

But NO Phil. He's not a benefit in anyway with his current playing.

Phil always seems to rise to the task of Ryder Cups though. He can be on a terrible cold streak but when he gets to the Ryder Cup, BOOM everything changes and he is a stellar player again. He has a win this year, so clearly he still has good golf to play. I can't see a scenario where he is left off. The first to spots will go to Phil and Tiger for sure. The other two are where things get complicated.

I'd rather take a chance on a younger guy. With Phil, it's a 50/50 chance he wins.... I would think Schauffele would have a 50/50 shot, as well as others, and the young one is getting experience for years to come.

I like Kisner and Phil for sure, both have the mentality for the matches and in spite of some issues with recent form Phil can turn on for the cup. Tiger could very well be a given for his recent showings and if for some reason he doesn't play I can't think of him being out of an assistant job. Last pick is a bit trickier for me, Bryson is a wild card but something in me wonders if he couldn't be the U.S.A equivalent to Poulter/Sergio in the cup events but he has shown to be an all or not so much kind of player. Kuchar is a good competitor and Xander has the points in his favor. Furyk has some thinking to do...

I got say. For as much as Phil and Tiger have done for the game of golf, and for the Ryder cup, I think that as long as they are able to physically, and as long as they are able to contribute something to the team, they will both be on every Ryder cup and presidents cup team until they decide not to be. They could play 1 match per day and the the singles and still contribute something. Phil is a team guy, you can put him with just about anyone. Pair Tiger with the right person and they can do damage, think of Stricker and Tiger. I think of the last Ryder cup with Phil where during the singles match he made 10 birdies. My four picks are Phil, Tiger, Kisner, and the fourth is Tough, Kichar is a veteran and a solid partner for anyone, but then you have Finau who isn't quite there yet, but shows great potential. Think about Tomas Peiters in the last Ryder cup. It will be interesting to see who Furyk picks, but I think Tiger, Phil and Kisner are on the team, the last one is between Four guys. Kuchar, Finau, ZJ, and Bryson.

Top 8 obviously - unfortunately we can't sub out Webb. My 4 picks would be The Cat, Kisner, Xander, and Finau. Time to get some young blood experience in the Ryder Cup. Phil hasn't done anything as of late to prove to me he's worth of a pick.

I agree.  As much as I love Phil, his Ryder Cup record is less than stellar and he's not been playing well this season.  Getting some of the new talent in the mix and experience with this venue will pay long term dividends - and quite possibly immediate dividends.

Totally agree with you. Phil does more than just “play”, and he definitely elevated his game the last two team competitions. This is probably the swan song for him; hope the US can take care of business in Paris. Euros are going to be strong & motivated. #mustseeTV!

Yes, he won but overall his stats and performance is not the normal Phil.  I think right now he is a more difficult decision (for Furyk) than normal.

I think based on Phil's history with the Ryder Cup, the only way he doesn't play is if he tells Furyk to not pick him.

Furyk is in a difficult spot. Fans would never want him to captain another Ryder Cup team and he would face some backlash from the golfing community if he doesn't pick Phil.

But conversely, is picking Phil best for the team? I think Phil will play well if picked. I think he will turn it on for the Ryder Cup. His singles record is just too good not to pick him.
