New Wedge vs Older square Grooved Wedge

I currently have 2 Cleveland CG15 wedges in my bag (56 and 60). My 56 is well worn out (at least 125 rds). I bought the CG15 wedges as that was the last year that Cleveland used square grooves.

My concern is if i go to a new wedge i will loose bite compared to what i have. I have heard that most wedges last only around 30 rds till your grooves start deteriorating.

Are new wedges with current technology and restrictions going to perform better then my dated square grooved wedges with regards to amt of spin? Should this be a concern at all?

I'm thinking of going to the Vokey SM7.

Thanks in advance!

Well I think you will find that the new crop of wedges will spin just as well if not better than your old ones at their prime. The technology that has gone into them is enormous and they have started putting grooves everywhere on the face.

The SM7s are great but I would try a few others too like the Ben Hogan Equaliser or the new Ping Glides or even the Cleveland RTX4s just to name a few.

The new wedges will spin better. RTX-4s and Glides will be great.

The square grooves are probably worn round by this point. I wouldn't worry about any spin reduction. Find the bounce and gapping that works best for you. The proper fit will make a much bigger difference than grooves.

The 2010 groove rule is still a sore subject with me.

Hell, I'm still complaining about losing the steel spikes.

The groove thing won't be leaving my mind soon based on that.

The USGA, at some point, has to realize that the club champion player, the 1 or 2 handicapper, maybe, is the standard by which to measure things.  Box grooves weren't making them burn down courses.

You don't make rules based on what the anomalies, the world class tournament players, do. The PGA Tour and its foreign equivalents are their sanctioning bodies. The USGA is supposed to be for us.  R&A, too.

PLUS, if the Fred Flintstone-looking  460cc driver is considered legal,  based on that, there's no need for any equipment rules at all.

Any of the new wedges will spin better than your old CG15.  Why are you considering the SM7?   Since you are looking, consider all options.  They are all a little different beyond looks.  Get a wedge fitting.

I actually went for a fitting and played with a SM7 last night. I liked the feel, performance and look of the club. I also hit the glide and mack daddy and liked them as well. I was able to generate more spin with the SM7 based on the launch monitor and i like the look of the SM7 better as well compared to the others.

I think that the new technology is worth the investment and i will be making a purchase, thanks for the feed back.

If at all possible, I'd suggest seeing if you can get hold of some demo clubs (beg, borrow, steal, liberate, whatever) to take out to the range and do some live hitting with them outside. I hear from many sources (notably Mark Crossfield & Rick Shiels) that wedges should always tested outside to get a better sense of real-world performance. I'm a PING guy and even in spite of that, I had to hit my current Glides head-to-head with my iron set wedges in order to be convinced that they were better or not. They proved better and that's what I went with.

Good luck in either case and if what you've selected gives you confidence, then you're miles ahead of most of us in that regard. Cheers!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a similar situation in that I have a CG15 56 that I don't really want to get rid of because it has the square grooves. But, after hearing feedback from everyone I think I'll take the plunge on some new RTX 4's.
