Time to ban Cell Phones again

Shankster

Recommended Posts

I'm a Tiger fan, you all know that. I just watched a video of some jack wagons cell phone ringing on why appeared to be the 17th hole when hit fanned that ball out to the hazard.

This crap is pathetic. People go see these top athletes play golf, and end up watching through stupid 5” screen.

Put the cell phone ringer on, and the people yelling stupid random crap on a ship and let them watch from offshore a ways.

I am actually pretty angry about this one. Put your phones away people! Respect the game.

If I were a tour player I would be complaining every chance I had about it, publicly too on all the social media's for the idiots to see. Might even Refuse to play similar to PR with the “Change Gate” in Germany.

We weren't allowed cell phones anywhere near players during tournament rounds at the PGA Championship at Baltustrol in 2016.

Not sure what's changed over the last two years but I was stunned by the number of cell phones out right next to players as they were playing their shots.

I mean I don't get it, but as long as the players aren't complaining then I don't see the big deal. To each their own

I agree something should be done about the poor fan conduct. I am not sure however that banning cell phones is the answer.

A more Augusta like style should be implemented. The phones are on silent or the first time it goes off, you are escorted off the course and banned from future tournaments. The first time you yell something at players you get escorted out. I think that will be a more effective fan mangament style.

If you just ban cell phones, people will inevitably find a way to bring them onsite anyway.

What happened is the PGA Tour and USGA  realized they  couldn't win the fight.  So it gave in by allowing them and put restrictions on what you can and cant' do with them.   They ask you to move to designated call areas if you are going to make an actual call, do the smart phones still make calls :)     Photo's and video's are ok, as long as they are on silent, but tough to determine who the violater is  when there are 50 phones in a group and one clicks during a picture.

They have even gone so far as to ask for promoters during the event, people that will roam the grounds and take photos of the action and the surroundings and post it on SM using official PGA Tour hashtags.

See the article from the USGA about this years US Open.

Glad they got more progressive. I welcome it.

People just need to be responsible and put their phones on airplane mode or silent.

I liked having the course app on my phone for last year's US Open. Easy to follow the leaderboards and view the course map to see closest restrooms, concessions, and what groups were coming up. It's the idiots that don't put them on silent that cause the problems.

I like the idea of a zero tolerance policy. Sound goes off you are gone from the course.

Just jam the cell towers near the event. It's stupid. I just don't get it.

I'd like to see a tougher policy on phones too, practice rounds allow you to bring cameras and are loose with taking pics, Thursday thru Sunday should be no phones and no shouting stupid things at tee shots. Take a pic? Get bounced, scream something stupid? Get bounced

are cell phones any more annoying than the idiots on a par 4 tee box yelling "get in the hole"?

Having attended several tournaments, albeit mostly LPGA ones with much smaller galleries, I have to rate golf very low on the scale of sports to watch live in person.

Football isn't great due to the shear size of the venues, and I've pretty much lost interest in basketball and hockey, although they both offer good sight lines in the arenas.

That leaves boxing and baseball.  I still enjoy both of them live and in person, but boxing is a destination sport because it's dead in Boston, and Fenway Park was made for 1912-sized asses..  Thank God for big flat screens and cable.

As for cell phones, I threw my smart phone in a drawer because it was too complicated to use and re-activated my old flip phone. I use it to order take out while I'm driving home or to call AAA if I get a flat tire.  That's it.

I don't see cell phones (aka electronic binky's) ever being banned from anything.  Hell, I heard one go off at a funeral recently . They are simply so ubiquitous to everyday life it's near impossible to control them. The Masters definitely leads the way on this, but even they cannot reverse the situation once its happened. Sure, if they can isolate who among that massive crowd was the offending party, they are escorted out - but Tiger's ball still goes in the ruff.  I think the modern day player just needs to develop a deaf ear as part of their game.

I could not agree more with this chain. I was lucky enough to take a bucket list trip to the Ryder cup 2 years ago in Minnesota. My friends and I were on the 9th green and one of my favorite golfers (Fowler) needed to chip in to tie and carry the hole over. It was makable and everyone in the stands knew it. I never pulled my phone our because I wanted to actually see it and love it for the price of admission I paid. He dunked it crowd went insane and I enjoyed eveye minute of it. While on the phone with my wife that night she asked me if I got video of it. I said no but I'll never forget it and she agreed that was much cooler than staring through the phone. Video would be cool to watch now but that was awesome in person and I'll never forget it and I'm glad at the time I didn't care at all about my phone or trying to film it and rather just living in the moment .

Yeah, at our Church Charity sale the other day, they had a college kid biking while playing Pokémon Go. He proceeded to run into the rope barrier, flip his bike, and go head first onto one of the tables. He then stood up, looked our pastor right in the eye and yelled, "Why the F*** are there tables where I was biking?" I have to give it to our pastor for keeping his cool and just diffusing the situation.

I can't stand people that are glued to their phones.

(Yes, yes, I know the irony of writing this on my phone😁)

There are small network jammers that can be implemented along the playing areas, that would block cell phone signal during the game. We use that in Europe to block signals near Police stations. Problem with that is.. we all have the right by law to stay ( and i may be lacking the right word here ) reachable in contact. That´s why those are only used in police stations.

They tried prohibiting my company works from bringing their phone with them but by law they had to let them keep their cellphone with them. As for people wanting to use the course app to see groups and nearest restrooms... they could do  like Niantic did to Pokemon players in the Chicago event, every user had a code to use that gave them access to a private network.

Great moment!

Reminds me of the tournament a month or so ago, when Spieth was off in the gallery area attempting a 15 or so yard, delicate chip shot.  The mics were on, and he very nicely asked everyone to put the phones down for this shot as he couldn't afford any unplanned distraction.  Everyone seemed to comply, and he quickly added with a smile..."you know it's ok to actually watch golf shots instead of recording them"   it got a laugh from the crowd, but the message was delivered.

2013 PGA was the king of irony for me. Any ordinary patron was unable to take their phone out during play. There were the regular common folk walking around and under constant watch of the phone marshal Reich.

Directly above them in the hospitality tents were the privileged who could use their phones at will without any consequence.

One patron made a scene and nearly knocked out the Marshall seizing phones because some nitwit was directly behind him taking photos at the same time from the hospitality tents.

My vote would be for them (cellphones) to be banned from all golf tournaments. I just despise seeing nearly everyone in the gallery "plugged in" all the damn time. Get off it people! Literally! Time & place for the stupid things!! While I'm at it..."Get off my lawn too!" B)

I don't see the conflict, here, unless it's some kind of class warrior thing (which is OK too if that's one's intent).

You get free drinks when you fly first class.  (Obviously, they're not really free.)

When I'd go to the race track back in the day, you had to wear a jacket to eat dinner in the clubhouse. So I wore a jacket. Big deal.

The box seats are more comfortable than the bleachers at the ball park.

You can use your cell phone in the hospitality tent.

It's all pretty consistent.

Rules are rules for a reason. The same first class passenger still passes through TSA.

The phones are a distraction to players, 5' and a hospitality tent doesn't eliminate that sound.

The only difference was that the general patrons were fair game.

I was on cell phone duty at colonial off and on and I'll tell y'all it's just trying to manage the chaos with or without the ban. I agree with you that the phones are a nuisance but the fella who forgets to silence his phone will forget even if he wasn't allowed to pull it out of his pocket. People are too dependent to ban them from the grounds entirely, even the volunteers have to use them for the job. I do wish that wasn't the case though...
