Williamsburg, VA courses

Recommended Posts

I'm heading down to Williamsburg next month for a little golf trip and I'm trying to pick our courses. I've only played Williamsburg National Jamestown course about 6 years ago and it was in good shape. If anyone is familiar with any of these courses and can shed some light on whether or not they're worth playing or has other suggestions, I'd really appreciate it. We are looking at about 4 or 5 rounds, maybe an afternoon replay a couple days. These are the ones I'm looking at:

  • Kiskiack
  • Colonial Heritage
  • Williamsburg National Jamestown or Yorktown
  • Golden Horseshoe Green or Gold
  • Cypress Creek in Smithfield

Thanks in advance!

The first two are very good. I don't know about the rest.

But look up Vintera. It's about 20 miles west of Williamsburg. But we'll worth the trip. One of my favorite courses Ibe played this year and I've been to Pinehurst.

I haven't played some of them in a while.   Potentially consider adding Fords Colony; they have 3 courses and Brickshire to the list.  Rob is correct Vinnetara is another good option.   I like Colonial Heritage it generally seems to be in good condition.  Williamsburg National was always questionable condition wise in my opinion.  Played the Golden Horseshoe Green last year and it is nice,  but the Gold would be my preferred choice.  Cypress Creek is my regular course;  would suggest adding something in the Williamsburg area instead of making the trek to Smithfield.  Haven't played Kiskiack in quite a few years so I can't answer about condition.

I've played them all, but it's been quite a while for some of them.

I'll third the recommendation for Viniterra. It really is a great course.

Last weekend, I played with a couple guys that had recently played one of the Williamsburg National courses (I forget which one) and they said it's in much better shape than it had been in recent years.

I'm a fan of both Golden Horseshoe courses, but especially the Gold.

I just recently played Cypress Creek. It's a fun course, but I agree with @cnosil that you can find courses just as good in Williamsburg.

If you go to Paul's Deli in Williamsburg, try the Hot Holly and the loaded cheese fries.

And don't ask students for directions ;)

In addition to Viniterra, I'd recommend Brickshire.  It's in the same area.  Conditions are superb.  Fun course, player friendly but challenging for all levels.

Love Golden Horseshoe, Kingsmill, Viniterra, Fords Colony should be given some consideration.  If you are staying in Williamsburg, take note, Cypress Creek is 45-60 minutes away.....

Next steps to my road to improvement
      Current
Adding the Mizuno MMC FliHi 4 iron to the bag once it comes it to replace my hybrid. The hybrid has too significant of a draw bias, not terrible, but I also draw the ball naturally already, and will probably go in and out of the bag, but I'm looking for better shot shaping with the FliHi and have that 210 to 225 distance into the green and off of the tee. Working on my putting. I'm rolling the ball nicely now with a slightly open stance with my current putter. I have another putter that I can get the ball rolling online, but the pace is off. Future step is to actually get fit for a putter. Working on my natural tempo and swing speed for the driver to have more consistent drives. See below for more info. Next
Driver shaft optimization. Not looking for a new head yet. I like my 2017 M1 460. Interested in the journey of testing some shafts. Right now my shaft is determining what kind of shot I can do. Slower speed and tempo than my natural speed and tempo. This has lead to a great deal of inconsistency of trying to find the "magic speed and tempo" and I know that isn't the way to go. Swing speed training. I'll have multiple shafts at this point so I can game whatever is best fitting me as I go along. And I can always swing a little slower or club down to hit a fairway. Future
Get fitted for a putter > get fitted for a driver/shaft and woods from a high level, reputable company willing to discuss numbers and takes the time and right approach. Open to custom shafts and not just from the OEM cart like at a Golf Galaxy. I have only been fitted to a driver once, but didn't purchase as I did not like the experience, small selection of shafts, and I wasn't swinging my natural speed and tempo like I should have.
