Do we really want to be entertained by the destruction of other peoples' brains and spinal cords?

The Roman Colosseum was allowed to deteriorate into ruins for a reason.

No.... I want to be entertained by the game I grew up watching. The game we have now might as well turn the corner and be professional flag football.

 

The QB can't be touched.... WR's can't be touched after 5 yards... WR's can't be tackeld/hit when in the air because they are "defenseless", so, the defenses are supposed to just let them have the ball???

 

RB's can't lower their heads (instinctive survival move) when engaging a defender.... catching the ball isn't really catching the ball anymore.... fumbles aren't really fumbles (tuck rule...lol)... kick offs were moved up so that they all go into the end zone, so no one can get tackled when running back a kick off... then there is the ridiculous "football move" rule (WTF?) if a catch is in doubt......... It just goes on and on with all the ludicrous, ticky tack rules.

 

As for the Roman Colosseum being allowed to deteriorate for a reason: shouldn't your sport of boxing be thrown in the same "arena"? After all... do WE really want to be entertained by the destruction of other people's brains?

Yes, it should. 

Boxing isn't quite as bad as football but it's bad enough.

It's a guilty pleasure, but if I believed in hell, I wouldn't still be watching it!

My very last opponent was a Massachusetts State Correctional Officer--a guard at maximum security Walpole.

 

I didn't like the looks of him to begin with, but during referee's instructions, he introduced himself as my new daddy.

 

Skipping the details, my new daddy went to Massachusetts General in an ambulance in an attempt to save his left eye.

 

You're welcome, inmates, but it didn't do me any good either.

 

I should have wretched right where I stood at the site of what I'd done.

Instead, I felt a wave of elation.

But having had a night to ponder that feeling, I emptied my locker at the gym for the last time the next day.

I understand. What I don't understand is............ how did a protest about how minorities  in this country are treated, become about the military???

 

I'm a staunch Conservative, and I respect and hold the military and all who serve/ed in highe regard. But.... this protest was never about the military or the people who serve/ed. How/why has it been taken as such?

 

For the record.... I'm totally against the protests AT THE GAMES.

It's not that anyone is afraid, it's that this a golf forum and not the place to discuss such things.  I appreciate taking that to a DM but just keep these in mind...

maybe we should add the NFL to off limit topics then, since it's obviously not golf related, and it has nowhere to go discussion wise besides the sewer.

I'm thinking my Lions are gonna suck AGAIN. Only 2 or 3 teams left that haven't been to a Super Bowl, and I'm convinced that the Lions will be last.

I'll argue that the players know what they are getting into.... and what they are getting paid millions of $$$ for. Defenses aren't allowed to play defense and Offenses can do what ever they want... just like the league wants, ala Major League Baseball with the home run ball.

 

No one wants to see anyone get hurt, but football is a violent game. All the players know this going into it. The league knows this, too. There is nothing you can do to make the game safer other than eliminate tackling altogether. 

 

Leading with the head is a natural body/brain function to tackle. The helmet to helmet rules are ridiculous. Yes, if it is very obvious that a defender used his helmet on purpose to inflict injury, a penalty is definitely warranted.... and should by all means be levied. Normal helmet to helmet contact is just a natural part of the game............. the whole thing is just out of hand.

 

The NFL is killing it's own cash cow with all the ridiculous rules that is making the game virtually unwatchable and unrecognizable.

the only thing I don't agree with here is the leading with the head is a natural body brain function. If you have never seen it look up rugby on youtube and watch the mayhem, I played for 20 years and officiate now and the first thing taught is proper tackling , aim for the hips and quads ,  not launching headfirst into an oncoming train.

 

Maybe I am off base in my comparison.  appreciate your thoughts and I do agree that the players are aware of the risks and still take them.

I don't care to go down that rabbit hole and my reason is clear enough.  I will also add that even before all the anthem stuff started, the league had lost its appeal for me.  Too little spirit, too many prima-donnas, and way to choreographed. I haven't felt connected to an NFL team since my days attending Dolphin games at the Orange Bowl during the early 70's. College football has long since filled the void. Go Irish!

 

Lastly, perhaps this thread should be moved to the "Everything Else" forum.

I tend to agree with you here. I like some of the rule changes, not all of them, I also think that some of them need to have better clarification. Watching in the preseason I have seen some questionable calls on the new rules, and with a bit of clarification the rules could be good.

 I haven't felt connected to an NFL team since my days attending Dolphin games at the Orange Bowl during the early 70's. 

Man, you are unearthing some major memories from my childhood.  My Dad took me to almost every game in the late 70's and early 80's growing up.  The Orange Bowl was magic for the home crowd that was neutered when they moved to Joe Robbie in '87.  The Dolphins have never been the same since.
