Yep. They've been trying to get him since the draft.

Belichick wanted him from the start.

Not sure why you're so caught up on trying to dunk on me for literally no reason.

You're right!  Not an excuse but I wasn't feeling well yesterday and took some of my frustration out on you.  Again, not an excuse!  It is what it is.  My sincerest of apologies!

What I was trying to say is, it amazes me ESPN would offer to pay as much as they did knowing flex scheduling and Super Bowls were out of the question.  NBC got both for literally half what ESPN paid.

Purely from the perspective of a Patriots fan, I hate Monday, Thursday, and Sunday Night football.  I only watch the 16 (or usually more) Patriots games, and the Pats always get at least one game on each of those weird times.  I'd like every Patriots game to be on Sunday afternoon at either 1 or 4 PM.

It pisses me off how little the league cares about my convenience and preferences.  I'm not asking them to suspend those games if they find them profitable.  Just don't schedule the Pats at those times.  The national audience is sick of seeing them anyway.

As a boy in the 1950s, before the Patriots were founded, I was a Giants fan (my fingers actually cramp as I type that).   All the games were on Sunday afternoon with Chris Schenkel and Johnny Lujack.  You know how I react to change.

That sounds familiar. Also Giants fan and Pats as backup (never mentioned that to my Dad). Used to go to Giants and Pats games and at one time Pats tix were dirt cheap at the old cesspool Gillette Stadium.
Then Kraft starts his demands for a new stadium with Mass and negotiations stall and Kraft turns to CT. The CT legislature gives Kraft the land, stadium and everything he wants. Proposed stadium 15 minutes from my house, my Buds and I are all over this. Part of the deal is, I believe it was Kraft that a minimum of Season Tix needed to be sold(this is before land was even cleared) so me like thousands of other foolish dupes pony up the bucks, Mass blinks, Kraft gets his deal in Foxboro. Took a while to get over that.
Not sympathetic for Krafty.

I wasn't a Giants fan with Pats as backup.  I dropped the G-Men cold as they lost one NFL title game after another and I jumped onto the Pats full bore.

It was a dago thing....the Pats had Parilli and Cappelletti, and I was all in--especially since tickets at Fenway Park were seven bucks. Even a college kid could afford that (although Red Sox bleacher tickets were only a buck).

By the time the Pats moved to Foxborough, I had lost interest in football altogether.  Then came Belichik and Brady.

They built the stadium in Hartford anyway, Rickp, and the Huskies moved up to FBS level, leaving their campus stadium in Storrs.

UConn had a kicker named Dave Teggart Jr.  I used to play golf with his dad, Dave Sr., who'd been a kicker at UNH.  Dad was nearly a decade younger than I. We had some great games.

The proposed Pats stadium was going to where the old Hartford Power Plant was and after Pats dumped CT a exposition center was built.
The football stadium that was built is Renchellier (sp) the home of UCONN football. That field is built on Pratt & Whitney property in East Hartford. Nice facility, easy in and out.

We did the cheap Fenway tix Pats games also. That was a blast.

  • 2 weeks later...

The Pats played absolutely dreadfully tonight.

If this is what the rest of the country puts up with, it's a wonder anybody watches football at all.

Having watched eight consecutive wins up to this point this season is no consolation for sitting through tonight's debacle.

I may have loved pro football as a young kid, but I don't even like it now. What I've been liking is the Patriots mashing the rest of the league. Sitting through three hours of football to see a loss is unacceptable, and sitting through a loss like this one is well beyond that.

To make matters worse, the Ravens are a traditionally cheap shot committing team that I particularly hate, I hate their stupid coach, and their uniforms look more like costumes.  I can't begin to say how much I loathe Ray Lewis.  But the Ravens played a squeaky clean game tonight and flat out kicked our asses. And with an amateurish running quarterback to boot.

This was just horrible.  That's three hours I'll never get back. I could have been watching Foyle's War or Father Brown reruns. I love that English s***.  Their food isn't fabulous, but I did find a bistro or two where I enjoyed meals.  I wish their immigration laws weren't so tough.  MF-ing Patriots.   I might as well have watched Arsenal play Liverpool. It would be like watching paint dry but still more entertaining than the Pats were tonight.

The Bruins are doing well but I don't care much about hockey or basketball.  When do the Red Sox pitchers and catchers report to Fort Myers?  They suck, and will suck worse next season after cutting payroll, but at least I like baseball. I'm old enough to have watched Ted Williams play. His batting stroke was the physical manifestation of the theoretical ideal. Much like Brady's passing form and defense reading before he became a premature geriatric. On some plays, dementia wasn't clearly out of the question either.

Rant over. I'm too old to punch holes through drywall anymore. At least I think I am. There's a lot of it between my man cave and my bedroom so all bets are off.

What in the world would be the point of that,  jlukes?

Gloating after Pats championships has gotten better and better as the rest of the country hates them ( and consequently us) more and more.

Football in general is tragic quadriplegia waiting to happen,

but Patriots football is an opportunity to flout our Eastern elitist provincialism!

I'm all for abolishing football after the Patriots Dynasty is finally over. What purpose would it then serve?

I still can't believe Jim Kelly went to the big show that many times w/o a win.  He deserved better.

As a lifelong Dolphins fan I'm ready for someone to put the undefeated season thing to bed.  Half of that '72 team is (literally) dead already anyway.  The other half can't remember any of it anyway.

Having sat in the Orange Bowl and Joe Robbie for years watching Griese, Marino, Csonka, and so many other talents come and go I've completely lost interest in what remains of the Miami Dolphins franchise.  A once consistent winner has turned into competing with the Jets for the worst team in the league year in and year out.

I've grown to respect what New England has accomplished over the past 20 years.  I can't stand it, but I respect it.  Sunday nights loss is just another blip on the radar for the Patriots.  They'll ultimately learn from the loss and end up in the Super Bowl again, probably against San Francisco or Green Bay.  The consistency with which New England dominates not only the AFC East, but the AFC in general should be respect and appreciated honestly, because they are doing things that will be hard to ever be matched by anyone in the future.  It's even more amazing in the age of free agency how that franchise continues to just reload and plow through everyone year in and year out.

I do think that the Ravens have given something of a blueprint for how to beat the Patriots.  Loading the box up with 3 tight ends, and two running backs, and going with the triple option isn't something we see very often.  And it simply exposed the Patriots in their small weakness.  They are built to stop the pass, and can't account for that many running options in a single play.  But like Belichick always does, if anyone decides to try and duplicate that play calling, the next team won't be able to pull it off.  We saw that years ago when Miami pulled out the Wildcat and destroyed the Patriots one day in Foxboro.  Only to see anyone else who tried that fail.  You might be able to beat him once, but Belichick simply adjusts and adapts to whatever is thrown at him and conquers when it counts.  I've just seen this show too many times to expect anything else to happen.

What that says is that should the Patriots meet the Ravens in the playoffs, the Ravens better hope they come up a new wrinkle not expected, because if they try what they did last night again, they will lose, and it won't even be close.

That's the measure of a hall of fame coach and a team that continues to win, and overcome all challengers and makes it look easy in the process.

Like I've been saying for the past 6+ years or so.  Just give New England the trophy in August and spare everyone the waste of time playing a bunch of meaningless games that ultimately end up with the same team coming out on top every single year - at least in the AFC anyway.

I don’t know - when you consider how football works everyone should have an asterisk - holding could often be called on plays - a hold here, a hold there, not called? That impacts the outcome of a game every bit as much as what New England may or may not have done.

There’s only an asterisk if you don’t like them IMO. They epitomize footballs spirit which is to play to the edge and let the refs decide.

College basketball starts this week - I’m happy about that and looking forward to the NFL draft next June to see if the Giants can get out of this hole they’ve been in during my lifetime or before the NFL goes away - which ever comes first.

It's a wee bit more than holding calls and no, I don't care for Belichick & Co.  For me, the only thing meaningful for the rest of this season is the 49er's losing a game.  That'll be equivalent to the Dolphins winning the Superbowl. 🤗
