I don’t doubt Commotio Cordis, I’m wondering if there isn’t a contributing factor. But I’d rather wait until the experts tell us versus armchair QB’s. That’s all I’m saying.

I get it.

We're going to learn that the contributing factor is the timing of the hit respective to his heart beat.

It makes the immediate and competent response of the trainers, doctors and paramedics so impressive.

So what does that mean, a resting heart rate of 60 has 60 potential opportunities per minute of being hit at the wrong time,  and a 90 heart rate has 90 discrete times during a minute that an ill timed blow can cause problems.  Maybe there are additional factors like mass behind the hit, velocity, etc.

I'm sure the medical screening on these players is off the charts good, hopefully.   Although times are different, Chuck Hughes complained of chest issues several weeks before he died.

An autopsy revealed that Hughes had undiagnosed heart disease and that a blood clot in a clogged artery had dislodged, possibly from a hit he took during the game. The autopsy also showed that it was most likely his second heart attack; the first seemed to have gone unnoticed. He had been hospitalized seven weeks before for what doctors told the family appeared to be a spleen, lung or kidney injury.

While others speculate and argue the same point of view, this is how a great number of us feel, and what I know is true as a Bills fan who remembers the awesome days of OJ running down the gridiron. Shared from a Bills Mafia Facebook post.

-- Bills Fan

"I am a second generation Bills fan. It has not always been easy. The Bills family has had to suffer from many disapointmets.  “Wide Right”, Four consecutive Super Bowl losses, the “Music City Miracle”, 13 seconds and a number of seasons when high hopes were dashed. To those outside of Western New York we were losers. We had no Championship Banner or Rings for our team. We were the team at the end of every bad football joke. As a Bills fan I have often uttered “not again” and “same old Bills” . I’m not getting any younger and have always wanted to be here when we finally would win a Super Bowl. I wanted to shout to heaven and yell to my father that we finally did it and imagine the smile on his face looking down. I thought that only then could the past be erased, that a Super Bowl Win would give us the respect that the Buffalo players and fans finally deserve. I thought that at that time I could REALLY be proud to be a member of the Bills Mafia and that our team would be respected. I was wrong. What I saw Monday night and the following day proves that this team will not be remembered for the poor seasons, lost Super Bowls or any other football disgrace from Orchard Park.  From now on when people think of the Bills thay will have the images of teammates and fans that rallied around a player in prayer and good deeds. The rest of the nation has gotten a glimpse of the real Buffalo Bills…..A team that is more Family than others. A team that cares for the city and a fanbase that cares for the team.  Yeah I would love to have a Super Bowl Championship , but to be honest I’m not sure If that win would make me any more proud to be a Buffalo Bills fan than I am today. I would think my dad would agree. We don’t need no stinking banner hanging to show people we are a Class team………….We showed the world that Monday Night….May God Bless Damar Hamlin , his family and teammates.  Signed, Proud Mafia Fan #GoBills"

I didn’t write this, but found it is powerful and needs to be shared.

"I can't wait...
I can't wait until he is well and conscious...
I can't wait until he hears the stories...
The stories of how an amazing first responder team resurrected his failed heartbeat while millions held their breath...
How grown men wept in horror at what they had seen, then dropped to their knees beseeching God to intervene in his behalf...
How the Bengals team visited the Bills locker room to encourage and show compassion to his team mates...
How much of downtown Cincinnati and the stadium was lit all night in Bills blue to remind people to pray for him...
How hundreds of Bengals and Bills fans prayed together by candlelight at University of Cincinnati Medical Center...
How $5 million (and counting) have been raised for his childrens' charity...
How the anchors of ESPN actually bowed their heads and prayed aloud on world wide television for his complete healing...
I can't wait for his mama to sit on his bed and tell him all the stories about how God used a young football player to teach a nation what is truly important...

VERY encouraging reports re: Hamlin today thankfully. Hope he makes a full recovery. I’m not a Bills fan (neutral, though Josh is a stud), but I don’t like to see any player hurt, especially that seriously. Keep the thoughts and prayers going to Damar.

It’s a combination of factors which makes it so rare.

Age, timing, location of trauma.

Within the beat, it’s during the ventricular repolarization at the beginning of the T wave.  Fractions of seconds and super rare.

I’m content in waiting for Damar to walk out of the hospital and i am certain we will know more in the near future…

…perhaps when Buffalo is done celebrating their Super Bowl Championship this year 😊

Things looking better by day, great news.  Big applause to medical personnel both on field and at hospital.

Times are sure different, Len Dawson having a half-time puff during the Super Bowl.  There's got to be a bottle of whiskey off camera somewhere, pain killer.

At risk of sounding like a Lions homie, the unnecessary roughness penalty call on Ramsey 'hitting' Geno Smith out of bounds was unadulterated garbage.   Ramsey's feet were both out of bounds while both of Smith's feet were in bounds at the moment Smith decided to veer out of bounds.    Ramsey has every right to protect himself either in bounds, or out, from Smith's forward momentum.  That would have been a legal hit if they were both in bounds.     It is not Ramsey's fault he had better ground leverage than Geno did.   Garbage I say, fresh garbage.

I am here to say that I LOVE Dan Campbell.  I love how he created a locker room with buy-in and trust.  You have a winner in that man and what he is building and considering your future draft picks, the future in the motor city is bright...like he said after a post-game win last season...

... Abysmal year for the Bears but a GREAT year for the Packers. 😇  I am also happy to see the loyal Lions fans finally get a team that doesn't let them down in key games and situations. Watching Hard Knocks this year I doubt anyone, even those that never played football couldn't see the difference between Campbell and Kingsberry. Campbell is a HC and sets the tone for his entire team and easy to see players would follow him through a brick wall. Kingsberry is an OC and while brilliant, he just doesn't inspire anyone.

... And speaking of Head Coaches, what coach in the right mind would take the Texans job? 4 Head Coaches in 4 years is a recipe for failure. Love Smith is an amazing HC and his players have always loved him and played hard for him. Only one year taking over a bad team and before he can get any traction the idiots that owns the team fires him?

... While I stop just short of saying the first year is a throw away year, you just can't play football while thinking, even in high school. It is a reactive sport and the higher the level the faster you need to react. Learning new nomenclature, responsibilities and how to combine every individual into a cohesive unit takes time and repetition. It is why you hear so many rookies say their second year they were much more comfortable and knew what was expected of them and they could play faster, which is just a different way of saying they no longer had to think while playing. Unless a coach loses the locker room because of decisions or personality, you have give them at a minimum 2 seasons to see improvement.

... When my son was being recruited we went to a lecture from an independent college recruiter. He showed a lot of film and said college is sooooo much faster than high school and if you wanted a scholarship you needed to play at college speed, not high school speed. So many high school players that are gifted physically don't put in the work to know the playbook and the other teams tendencies because they didn't need to at that level. He showed some good players making good plays. Then he showed some good players that made great plays and they were obviously playing much faster than everyone around them. He said interviewing these players he always found they studied as hard as they practiced so they could play fast without thinking. Made a big difference for my son and why he earned a college scholarship.

There was some buzz following the game that the staff and players got into it in the tunnel after the game...

Green Bay were running their mouths and Lions were heard saying "let's play again so we can beat you a third time this season"

...you gotta love what Coach is doing there.

Love it!!

So was that an false start for the jags?

Happy for them, but do feel bad for the chargers. I think they are probably the better team as a whole. What a good finish to the game though!

By the book, yes it was a false start.  But I mentioned this to a friend a week or so ago. It’s become a bit of a trend mostly with LT though. You will see then often get a beat ahead of the snap and it’s not being called much at all.   Although that one yesterday was probably 2 beats.

It’s not unlike traveling in basketball. It used to be the rules said 1.5 steps without dribbling.  Pretty sure you now see 2.5 to 3 sometimes and not callled

I like San Diego.  But I don’t feel bad for them. They only needed to score like 1 TD in the second half to likely win.

I am happy for Lawrence.  I would have hated for that 1st half performance to been his lingering memory of his playoff debut.
