Carry the water, roll back in. Where do you drop?

I played with some friends recently and my friend hit over the water in front of the green on a par 3, then rolled back into the water. Does he have to drop behind the water he came over, or could he of dropped back and to the left of the water? He would of been no closer, but wouldn't of had to go back over the water?

2 club lengths from the hazard, no closer to the hole, or keeping the line of your shot between you and the flagstick, go back as far as you want up to where you hit your last shot from, or play under penalty of one stroke, from where you hit your last shot.

I'd have to see a visual from your scenario, but it sounds to me like he'd have to make the walk of shame to back to the other side of the water hazard to take his drop.

I agree with GSwag. It happens at Augusta every year, back to the other side of the pond it is legal drop area.

If it is a yellow stake or line, you MUST keep the point where the ball entered the hazard between you and the hole.  That almost always means dropping it on the far side from the green, and hitting over the water again.  The "2 clublengths" option that GSwag mentions only applies to lateral hazards (red stakes or lines).

The 12th at Augusta is yellow staked so you must drop behind the water. On lateral Hazard you can drop Two club lengths from where the ball entered the hazard if the new lie is no nearer the hole

That's a common misunderstanding.    The line you are talking about is from the flagstick through the point where your ball last crossed the margin of the hazard.

yeah, that. It's probably easier to quote the rule verbatim from the USGA website.
