If anybody really liked the idea of un-numbered irons....

Hogan seems to have bailed on that cool idea.

Edel, however, will still stamp lofts instead of club numbers on their irons,

if that's what you want,

and they offer two sole grinds as well. Four on the wedges.

I think that's where I'd go if I still could play.

I thought that unnumbered irons were the bomb,

but FW15s, which I barely got to play in 2015,

weren't a good fit for me based on the small sample size.

I'm surprised using lofts instead of club numbers isn't more common. I could see it being helpful when comparing different iron sets, especially if you put together a mixed set. I guess it might undermine some marketing efforts. Hitting 10 yards longer on a stronger loft is a different sell than new technology in the face adding that distance.

Ultimately the labels my clubs have no impact on what I'm going to play though. Consistency and expected performance is worth more to me. Shopping on a budget, I got lucky I love the look of the clubs that were most consistent for me in testing.

That said, I do like the look of no numbers at all quite a bit. It looks very clean.

I think what is really the bummer here is that more company don't give you the option to have what you want stamped on the sole from the get go. Pretty sure only Edel and National Customs are offering this.

Club numbers obviously have no bearing on the performance of golf clubs.

I'm not suggesting that, of course.

I just like the look.

Still, if you're old enough,

and your mind still works on 1960s club number / loft correlations,

the new correlations become an unnecessary thing to think about.

It's like you have to convert from fahrenheit to celsius  while choosing a club.

And it seems to change again every five years.

Without numbers,

25º can be my three iron and your 5-iron,

but we both have an idea of how far we're going to hit it.

And 25º doesn't change meaning every five years.

National Customs takes it to another level by letting you choose completely your own numbering system if you want. I have even seen people giving each club a specific name and even one where they numbered each using a PacMan design with a different number of dots for each club

Names, numbers, loft designation I've seen all of them in my playing career. I don't think the loft works for most people - they want a number and they want to hit it farther.

I don't care too much how it's marked, so long as I know how far I hit the thing, carry and carry plus run out, I'm good.

Sorry Rev, but Nifty Niblick and "most people" exist in alternate realities.

I do care.  I believe in my "fahrenheit to celsius" conversion analogy.

Anti-intellectual, "regular guy"  attitudes offend my snobbish Eastern values--sad, perhaps, but true

(or semi-facetious / semi-true).

But I don't play anymore,  so it obviously doesn't matter!

I don't think the problem is "regular folk" wanting to use numbers over lofts, but the manufacturers not having the option for those with a preference. Do you care what brand irons the people you play with use? This would fall right into that category if you had the option to get lofts on all your clubs without going custom. Instead you're forced to use a system that is less informative/preferred.

Edit: to relate it to you C/F analogy, buying irons would be like buying a thermometer. As long as you can buy the one that works for you would me having different units on mine be of any relevance? Unless you're asking me what club to hit for X distance (asking what temp it is) we might not even know we're using different systems. And if you were playing with me I'd say "Let the big dogs eat, hit a driver" wherever we were on the course...

Also, you're a plebe if you're not using Kelvin  :D

Yep you are correct 25* is 25* any way you slice it year after year. BTW my Macgregor VIP 4 iron is 25*. If you listen to most people today they refer to a hybrid by degrees not club number of the iron it was supposed to replace. Only thing for me on say the new clubs is what degree is supposed to be what club in the modern world. I have old school standard degrees memorized on command. Yeah with most modern jacked loft CB/GI sets today their PW is my 8 iron.

Even the pure blades are at least one club strong now, Stu.

Go back a few years and compare Mizuno MP14s and MP29s.

I dare one to tell the difference between the models,

were there no model number stamp,

without measuring the lofts.

That's when things really started to change.

But it's hard to understand having a number / loft correlation in one's mind

if one grew up in the era where the lofts and the club numbers never had a real correlation.

What difference does the stamping make? None to them.

When I learned golf in the early 60s, however,

I could compare a Wilson Staff 7-iron,

a MacGregor Tourney 7-iron,

a Spalding Top Flite 7-iron,

and a PowerBilt Citation 7-iron

They'd all have the same loft, the same length,

and chances are good that they'd all be

D2 /  Regular      or     D3 /  Stiff

with the same True Temper Dynamic shaft.

If one were to stick the wrong one in everybody's bag, it's entirely possible that the entire foursome would go the whole round without noticing a problem with their 7-iron shots.  Only the grips might give them away.

Most of the folks on this forum never knew that world, so when we talk about number / loft correlations, they can't imagine why.

That's why I think straight loft stamping would work for everybody--or should at least be available.

I could go either way but I'm used to having numbers o the irons so it'd be a learning curve for me to switch to loft markings and I guess I'd prefer not to have to think that much for club selection. But on the other hand my wedges are marked with lofts and I'm use to that so I'd adapt if I had to.

A friend of mine that I golf with has the Hogans with the loft instead of the the  club #.  I'm glad they went away from that, had no clue what iron he was hitting most of the time  :D

I've got the FW15  irons too, although I never really hit them well .

In contrast, I thought that the lofts instead of club numbers were a great idea.

It turns out that I'm well into the minority on that. Club number / loft correlations are a big gripe with me and a non-issue with just about everybody else.

But if the OEMs stamp a five on a club that i consider to be a three-iron, I'm just not going to buy the club.

It's too strong lofted to be a five iron and two short to be a three iron.

Bingo - and to go one step further I do not care what my friends are hitting either.  My ego only cares about my score, and my score relative to what I know I am capable of shooting
