Cleaning the grips

A great question was asked in the Cobra connect challenge by STUDque about grips in humid conditions. ReseeDW replied and made a comment about cleaning his grips.

So this got me thinking and I would like to learn some of your tricks of the trade from fellow spies.

1. How often do you clean them? (very much dependent upon where you play and how often)

2 Do you use any cleaners?

I clean mine about once a month and just use warm soapy water.

Thanks

I clean mine when I lose some tackiness. That is generally 5-10 rounds depending on heat and humidity.

I just take them and spray them with the garden hose on "jet" setting and dry them off with a clean towel. That returns then to normal tackiness.

After that, I replace them about once a year, so about every 100 rounds.

I clean my grips regularly with a 10% bleach to 90% water solution. I spray the solution on the grips then immediately start working my way down from long irons to wedges. I do it in that order because the wedges get used more thus are more soiled. I then put each club under running warm water followed by drying with a microfiber towel.

FYI- I use car wash to clean the heads. It does a great job of breaking down the soil while also providing a thin protective wax film. I dry with a microfiber towel.

Pictures are of my irons, three years and 180 rounds old.

I clean my gear from grip to clubhead after every round or once a week minimum, yes it's an ocd habit and only makes a difference in my head most likely but boy do they look sexy after a good scrubbing. I use a mix of dawn and water in a spray bottle for the grips.

Try Westley's Bleche Wite tire cleaner. It will keep grips in great shape and restore tackiness to older clubs. . And it's cheap and 1 bottle lasts forever..

warm soapy water and light scrubbing is all you need. It's only dirt and grease on the grips.

I find that grips that are the synthetic leather wrap type last longer than rubber or cord ones that dry out faster.

I clean them with grip cleaner. I'm certainly not going to figure out a simpler solution on my own.

Once I stopped wearing a glove, the wrap type grips were all that I used.

They're more like the actual leather wrap grips that were on the very high end,

hand-me-down,   MacGregor / Wilson set with which I learned the game. But they're softer.

[some people learn the game with cheap clubs. I learned with top of the line clubs, but several years old.]

Re-gripping is supposed to be easy enough to be a d-i-y project, but I always had it done in the shop. I'm sure that I'd find a way to screw it up.

I don't have a set schedule for cleaning my grips. My routine is to check my bag the day before I play and make sure everything is in order. Check the clubs and grips, do I still have tees, is the ammo box full etc. If something needs cleaning, that's when it will happen. Taking a guess, I'd say my grips get cleaned 3 or 4 times a year.

To clean them it's Dawn dish soap and warm water. Towel dry after.

When I clean grips I use 2 towels. One to dry and a damp one with a little dish soap and warm water. Dish soap is made to remove oils so I have a hard to ever recommending any other kind of cleaner for cleaning grips. Personally I don't want to use any kind of brush on them (Outside of a toothbrush) because you don't really need much scrubbing to get them clean and also the point of cleaning is to pro long the useful life of the grips so I want to avoid any potential wear that scrubbing with a brush could potential cause, especially to grips with cord

Sweet looking mizzy Steddy, reminds me of my old 33's...

Anyhooo, I'm in the warm water with dawn camp, probably every 2 months.

I like a half wet towel during play to keep the heads clean after every shot too

Yup, hot soapy water to my grips about every 10-12 rounds. If they're getting "greasy" I'll wipe them down with a bit of "Soft Scrub" cleaner that has bleach in it then rinse with hot water and towel dry.

I clean my grips every two or three rounds with warm soap and water, rinse with warm water thoroughly and dry with an old towel.  On the course I've taken to carrying two golf towels, one of which I soak for wiping my grips, especially the driver that gets used a lot.  Most rounds I am not rushing to keep up to anyone so I wipe down all my grips on every shot.  I play in hot and humid conditions most of the summer here in Windsor and dry and dusty conditions in Calgary for a few weeks most summers.  I feel much more confident with sticky grips so I've become pretty steadfast about keeping them clean and grippy.

Warm soap & water for me.  Plus I use the club brush to rough them up a bit ... then they are good as new.

I do it after about every 3rd or 4th round.  Just to keep them fresh & tacky.
