Mizuno JPX919 Irons...oh my gawd...

Recommended Posts

I know I'm not the only one that needed a moment after gazing at Tony's article about Mizuno's new lineup.

At first I was like:

And then I saw the JPX919 Forged were available for lefties and I was like:

Ping i210, Srixon Z Lineup, and now this?!?! Sweet Jesus what a time it is to be alive* in the golf industry.

* - well...alive until the wife sees the credit card bill and notices a bunch of 46" x 5" x 5" boxes showing up at the front door.

What are your thoughts on the lineup? Man, I haven't had personal success with Mizuno irons in the past but these just look incredible.

I love me some Mizuno irons, but the Srixon look hotter than a pig on a spit!  Hoping they are all available in LH.

The Higher launch and less spin in the 919 Tours than the 900's isn't something I need, but will obviously help a lot of golfers who want to game them.

What I think is the best news is the more durable finish.  I will be posting some pics in the 900 Tour review thread to update the wear of my 900 Tours to show how, while the bag chatter is acceptable, the finish itself wears awkwardly - specifically near the power frame cavity area.

I guess that's not something people think about when buying irons, especially chrome finish irons. The only 900 Tours I've seen are on TV/online for WITB and they always look pristine. Let me know when you post those pics.

I understand the design differences and how they should impact performance but find it hard to believe that the "higher launch & lower spin" claim will produce any material difference from the 900.

For example, its just one man's test but Rick Shiels' test of the JPX 919 Tour that was uploaded today produced marginally higher launches with marginally higher spin across the board compared to the JPX 900 Tour.

I think the tours look fantasitic - very mizuno.

The badges on the other models look kind of flimsy to me. I'm sure they will stay in place, but there is something about the way they look that makes me thing they come lose and rattle—can't explain it.

Does the cavity badge on the JPX919 Forged look strange to anyone else?

JPX919 Forged Badge.jpg

"The biggest improvement over the JPX900 Forged is found under the hood. A new Microslot milling technique effectively increased the size and depth of the undercut cavity hidden behind the cavity badge."

I can grok the intended performance advantage, but the fit and finish of that badge looks sorta chintzy to me.

Yea definitely not the most flattering angle but I also would have preferred the badge to mirror the look of the Tour and fill the entire cavity and fit up a little more seamlessly

I have seen a lot of different angles - hasn't changed my impression. I am also not a big fan of badges in general—steel only for me. I wonder what it would look like without it (although I do get that badges are often added to correct sound/feel).

And should we start the murky pontification now?   Do you think Brooks will game it? Do yah? Do yah?

They look flimsy and tacky. It is Mizuno so I am sure it is well made but it might mess with my head.

I don't like the weird, fake mill markings, I am not sure of the purpose behind that. It might turn away some people based on the looks, if the left the badge all chrome, it might look alright.

The Tours look 100% sweet though.

I never noticed the badge but yes, it looks like a badge you'd find on a fridge that is made to look like it's integrated with the fridge only to fall off a few years later and have the outline "whirlpool" ghosted forever into the surface.

Badges aside, a big round of applause for the pictures posted in the main article.

I don't know if sometimes MGS is only provided with pictures and can't take their own, but the angles shown in this article were perfect.

A look at address, of the face, from behind, down the toe. Not all of these angles are often shown in a product announcement or first look, but I am hoping they become standard for MGS. I have a much better idea of how the product will look in hand.

Please continue the great work.

The idea of BK changing platforms after the success he's had with the 900s is hard to fathom.

Lol! That sounds specific enough to be derived from personal experience.

The Forged lineup specifically, looks like they strapped the hood of Buick LeSabre onto a Ferrari. But the likelihood of glimpsing the back of any iron when it's in use is probably about the same as managing to get your elbow into your ear. I'm sure they are an incredible set of wrenches.

I doubt there is a mega difference in feel from the 900 in Tour I'm guessing.

The triple mix set sounds good

4-5 in hot

6,7 in Forged

8,9,p in tour

Gapping could be an issue tween 7,8., but I guess you could experiment with bending.

The 919 Tours look so pure. I still think I prefer the cavity shape of the 900 tours but if the 919's truly perform better, they are going on my wish list.

What are your thoughts on the lineup? Man, I haven't had personal success with Mizuno irons in the past but these just look incredible.

I don't care if the Mizunos result in a lifetime of shanking, they're going ITB!!! Or is it the i210s??!! Like you said, what a time to be alive.

I'd be worried about gapping between the 6 and 5 too. I know the MP-18 line was advertised to be bended seamlessly. I think the 919 lofts differ a little bit more. Any knowledge on it?

What are your thoughts on the lineup? Man, I haven't had personal success with Mizuno irons in the past but these just look incredible.

I don't care if the Mizunos result in a lifetime of shanking, they're going ITB!!! Or is it the i210s??!! Like you said, what a time to be alive.

Always remember that Mizuno irons are built a degree and a half flat compared to all other OEM's. E.G. If you play 1° flat normally, you need to order 0.5° upright in a Mizuno.

This could hurt your performance drastically.

Wilson Staff C300 9.0* Fujikura Pro 58 stiff

Ping I200's 4-W Aerotech Steelfiber I110 CW stiff

I love the sleek look of these irons.  There's no color to try and pull your eye to them.  They are purely Chrome.  I may give these a try this winter.
