Controlling spin HELP!

Recommended Posts

So I've been struggling lately with over spinning the ball. I'll hit anything from like a 9 iron through my lob wedge and the ball hits the green and spins back anywhere from 15 - 30 feet.

I watch a lot of golf and see the pros control their spin whether they hit a one hop and then stop or the ball just hits and sticks.

I'm a 3 handicap and hit the ball pretty well so if you have any advice on how to take spin off or start to learn how to control it a bit that would be amazing.

I play the Pro V1x and would prefer not to switch to something rock hard and lose all my touch around the green. Thanks in advance for any advice or tips!

are your greens very soft?

Sounds like you make great contact. One way to reduce spin (without changing ball) is to swing slower with more club, that might not suit your game so I can only suggest you play for that shot and land past the pins.

when our greens are very soft you can backspin off a green, or even 'suck back' a 3 iron! Drives come back 2-3 feet on fairways as well

More club and less swing. Pros rarely go full out especially with the scoring clubs.

Isn't the ProV1 supposed to spin a little less on short irons, but still have a pretty similar short game behavior as the x?

I'm not a high spinner of the ball. However there are times when I do want to produce more spin so I try and "pinch it". I suspect you trap (or pinch) the ball much more than most thereby producing too much spin. I'm sure it's a problem though. Would be for me.

Shallow your divot, should help reduce the spin. There are a lot of different factors and almost impossible to detect through the forum. I am a high ball, high spin player. Always played the PRO V1X because it was the only one that would not spin completely off the green. I have switched to the AVX and it still spins back some but not more than 5-7 feet. There are times, especially when hitting from hard surface that even it spins too much, but overall it is good. It reacts differently around the greens but it is an easy adjustment and control is still there.

Yes, since they changed them, the V1x is supposed to have more spin. Maybe a switch to the V1 would be worth the try, but it's likely that won't be enough to not spin the Ball back too far, he will need to use more club and less speed to control the spin better.

I'm honestly not sure. I was told to play the X because my swing is pretty quick. I'll bug the guys at the golf shop and see.

I was just given a sleeve of this to play this week! So I'm excited to hear that! How have they been on distance for you?

I try to stay away from courses around my area with super soft greens. I get too frustrated. I'll try to club up if my ego will let me.

I can speak only for myself, but the ball spun harder for me when I hit a low pitch from back in my stance.

I found that a higher, softer shot with a more vertical descent doesn't spin as hard after landing.

I'm not talking about a short flop shot.  I'm referring to a higher full pitch.

The guys in the shop may or may not know what's best. The current Pro VI will fly lower, feel softer and spin a bit less than the Ix. So that may help some if you don't mind the softer feel.

The best advice here is IMP the best advice, take one more club and swing easy - that will reduce the spin and solve your problem.

Let us know how that turns out.

I tried it today on 4 out of 7 greens I had short irons into and did pretty well. It's hard on the ego hitting an extra club but the ball definitely stopped and didn't zip back.

Thanks for the advice! The real test will be this weekend playing when money is involved!
