Cleaning Out The iPhone - Sea Pines CC, Hilton Head

Got a lot of course pics on the iPhone from the past year, some are worthy of sharing, some are so-so.  Here are some from one of the better courses I was lucky enough to play this year - Sea Pines on Hilton Head.

It was just a few weeks before the big PGA tourney at Harbour Town, so of course the Mrs. and I had to wander around the lighthouse. It was a cold and windy day, but by tee time the wind died down a bit and it warmed up enough to shed the sweater.

IMG_5729.jpg

Sea Pines is a private club but, in a rare display of poor judgment, they let me play it anyway. My wife and I were on a mini-vacation in Savannah at the time. so it worked out. She was able to see some of the sites on Hilton Head Island, and I was able to get in a mid-March round and try to dust off some of the cobwebs.

IMG_5732.jpg

Highlights included 3 birdies, lowlights included 4 double bogies,  each time following solid drives in the fairway. Short game killed me, a sign of my entire season, I'm afraid, and a reminder of why this is a hobby and not a profession!

IMG_5733.jpg

From what they told me, Sea Pines is actually a fairly decent deal as far as memberships go. Depending on what you want to pay, your membership can include playing privileges on other Hilton Head courses, including Heron Point, Atlantic Dunes and even Harbour Town. If you belong to a private course and are vacationing in the area, they will do a reciprocity deal with your home club.

IMG_5741.jpg

It's well worth it - while not as grand as Harbour Town, it's a nice test of golf and requires all the shots in the bag. You'll see houses along a lot of the fairways, but that's basically Hilton Head.

IMG_5739.jpg

A couple of reminders if you do visit - they'll give you a card when you show up that will allow you to buy refreshments at the clubhouse - it shows that you're a guest. I gave one to my wife but she forgot about it. They charged her - $6, I think - at the gate to actually get back in to pick me up and then they wouldn't let her buy a drink at the bar while I was finishing. So if you visit, don't lose track of that card!

IMG_5735.jpg

After reliving the round via ShotScope, I was surprised to realize I shot an 83 - although it didn't feel that good at the time. The 3 birdies made me happy after a long layoff, and I was able to keep it in the fairway for the most part (or at least playable) - helpful given Sea Pines requires you to keep the ball in or at least close to the fairway - there's not a lot of room out there. I brought a set of Wilson C300 forged irons with me. I'm not sure how they're going to fare in the Most Wanted Players Distance Iron (my guess would be pretty well) - but I had some really good luck with them.

I'll have some others if you guys are interested - played some interesting tracks this year in the US, but just missed out on an opportunity to play the tournament course at Firestone last week due to cancelling the trip. Bummah....

Nice pics. Are you still liking those C300's?

I'd been juggling clubs since spring and finally wanted to commit to one set, so I went with the Srixon Z 765's. The C-300's are about to get mixed into a progressive set with the FG Tour V6 Raw's - we'll see how that plays out...

But I did enjoy them when I played them - nice feel and the distance is terrific....

Kinda like me I am going conforming for now because i am going to come out of retirement and play some events hopefully. I ended up going back to my Forged 2013 Callaway X irons. Man those things are hot and I actually have them "deballed"some on lofts from stock specs. They are still about a club and a half stronger than any of my old blade Macs and not just because of the loft. If I bump them to spec they are 2 clubs hotter. I also had to build me some conforming wedges which the 2 I built are good. But like it or not I am going to have to get a gap wedge. Just got off of the USGA website looking if anything I had in the 48 to 50 range was conforming-- Found I had 4 including the Renegar ones I tested here. Yeah those clubs are hot-- yesterday I was doing a layup after a pop up drive hit the 4 iron 215!! Trust me i am 61 years old and do not do that! I was actually trying to hit it about my customary distance of 190 or so.

Not on that trip. Played another round in Savannah - at the course on the island. Loved it - but liked Sea Pines better.

Played a couple of HH courses back in the 80's - but this was my first trip there since

Really enjoyed the Club at Savannah Harbor - hope to go back there and play it again. I think I have some pix on the phone from that round as well. I'll see what I can find....
