Bridgestone Tour B JGR HF2 Irons – Introduction by MaxEntropy

attachicon.gif IMG_2839_Small.JPG

I cannot begin to tell you what an honor it was to be selected for this test – when Barbajo sent us the PM about the opportunity, I had to slap myself and re-read it 47 times to make sure I wasn't crazy. So, thank you MGS and Bridgestone for the amazing opportunity!!!

This will not be your typical Stage 1/Stage 2 review. As you are all aware from Rob's intro, this was almost an entire bag test (including the bag and balls), all done on the “down-low”. Due to a media embargo, we could not share much, if anything, when random questions arose at the range or course and could share NOTHING online so it was also difficult to avoid dropping subtle (or not-so-subtle) hints around the forum, although astute readers may have noticed MGoBlue100's avatar change a few days early. Fortunately, we had a couple PM threads where we could “talk” openly.

A few words about me: My name is Blake and I am 50 years old, originally from Vancouver, WA, and have been living in Akron, OH since 1997. I started playing golf semi-regularly while I was in grad school and started taking it much more seriously when I moved to Ohio and got involved in a work league. I steadily improved over the years without too much practice to the point of getting my unofficial handicap to the 12-14 range. “Life” happened in the early 2000's which, when combined with two young daughters at home, meant I hardly played for nearly 10 years. I slowly got back into the game about 6 years ago and over the last 3 or 4 years, it has become an obsession and I have been averaging about 30-40 rounds per year over that time. My unofficial handicap has been as low as 15 by the end of last year but has ballooned to about 18 this year while I worked through a serious swing flaw that a couple lessons late last year identified. I know the tendency is still there, but not as bad as it was, and my handicap is hopefully on it's way down. My wife and I are a year away from being empty-nesters, so I sincerely hope and plan on devoting much more time to practice. I would love to get to a single digit handicap, but honestly don't know if it is in the cards for me at this stage in my life.

When we were informed of the test and got our specs in to Rob and Barbajo, the waiting game began. I love and hate the UPS app tracking features – I love it because I was able to check the status way too frequently and I hate it because I did check the status way too frequently. I'm a bit OCD like that.

attachicon.gif IMG_20180821_134303_Small.jpg

“C'mon, Mr. UPS man! The app said you would be here between 2:00 and 6:00 and it's already 2:30!”

Finally, the boxes started arriving….

First, the bag:

attachicon.gif IMG_20180817_144316_Small.jpg

Next to arrive were the boxes that really counted:

attachicon.gif IMG_20180821_193528_Small.jpg

“Oh, don't you worry, I won't be refusing….”

I was like a kid during Christmas and could not wait to get to the goods!

attachicon.gif IMG_20180821_194154_Small.jpg

attachicon.gif IMG_20180821_194909_Small.jpg

“All present and accounted for, SIR!”

The visuals of the clubs will be discussed in more detail in the appropriate threads/posts, but I will say I find the entire line-up very attractive. Here are a few teaser shots to keep you coming back, but keep in mind I am not Golfspy T when it comes to photos….

attachicon.gif IMG_2841_Small.JPG

attachicon.gif IMG_2849_Small.JPG

There was still one more delivery scheduled:

attachicon.gif IMG_20180823_165525_Small.jpg

“They came with MGS logo on them. Nice touch, Bridgestone!”

As of this writing, the clubs have been in my possession for about 3 weeks and I've gotten 63 holes of play in and 3 range sessions, so you can guarantee there will be regular updates as new information/data becomes available to us. Keep an eye on this thread and please post any questions you might want addressed!

My intention is to post my initial impressions in Stage 2 later today.

To be continued....

Great Intro Max!  I wanted to save the ball surprise for one of you guys to show.  We couldn't let all the goodness out of the bag the first thing in the am!

I know right. I'm most impressed by Rob being able to not talk about new irons for so long.

I know right he did leave a little hint about 3 or 4 sets since his fitting lol

LOL!! You have no idea

Thankfully I had my test brothers to share with and the few people at the course who saw them.

PAGollfer saw the Bag before the clubs arrived and asked about it. I told him it was a prize for an outing. I feel so bad for lying. Ha

Awesome stuff guys

I'm starting to think that being a member here is a bad idea, I can feel myself turning into Rob and wanting every set of irons I see

Oh man. I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It's a horrible affliction.

Tour B JGR iron Review

The old test drive program was extremely popular and I look forward to seeing it's return.

The irons will be available in retail accounts on Oct 8, 2018 and the HF2's have a MAP of $899 for a 5-AW setup with stock shafts. A 4 iron is available for $130.

attachicon.gif bag picture to be turned.jpg

Alright I gotta know, Since You and Jose play in the same league. Granted his were 1 length, but how do they feel compared to the Cobra F8's? I know you played with them..

you are right. I did see the results up close every week.

And no offense to Jose or Cobra. But it's not even close. I'll take these every day of the week.

I'm tempted to put my ShotScope sensors on them to gather some data, even though I struggled with shot scope logistics.

Well niether of us advanced. I hit the ball so great off the tee. My wedge game was the worst it's been all year. Dropped shots around the green all night long.

Well yes for me. But you had amazing results with the F8's. So they are obviously a top notch club as well.

These have just worked very well for me so far and the look is right up my alley.

I think many of you here “know” me from my previous reviews, posts, and general sarcastic sense of well… everything. I have had a really poor Summer of golf, mainly due to the recovery from a ladder incident in January. I'll say it again in case you didn't read the original thread: “Stay off ladders! You can hire professionals to do that.” (If you ARE a professional doing that, PLEASE be careful. Anyway, I've been slowly rounding into form, and had passed on even throwing my name into the hat for any product reviews so far this year, because I didn't feel, quite honestly, that I could play (or even swing) well enough to do justice to any type of club review.

I was very surprised and flattered to have the opportunity to review these clubs. I toured the Bridgestone ball manufacturing facility with GolfSpy Barbajo in March 2016. The facility was cool, and was very similar to a facility where he and I had worked together previously. In addition to the tour of the ball plant, we also were given access to Bridgestone's club and ball testing facility, where we saw their robotic club testing machines, their high-speed camera capability (impressive!) and their 400-yard-long laser-flat driving range! (Yes, it's SUPER COOL!) While we were there, we went through a Bridgestone ball fitting, and also had the chance to hit the original series JGR Driver and the original JGR Hybrid Forged irons, I believe the predecessor to this current generation's HF-1 irons.

Bridgestone offers quite a few shaft options at no upcharge. I was seriously interested in the Nippon Modus 3 Tour 105 shafts, but I could never find anywhere to hit a club that might be similar with that shaft combination. With that being the case, and wanting to be able to do a true "apples to apples" review to do justice the Bridgestone, MyGolfSpy and all of you, I had the HF-2 irons I ordered built with the same KBS Tour 130 X-flex shafts I currently have in my Mizuno JPX-825's.

I was eagerly anticipating reception of all of the clubs, and much like Christmas morning, they finally arrived:

attachicon.gif Photo Aug 24, 1 35 50 PM.jpg

I was super stoked, and then I read the build sheet:

attachicon.gif Photo Aug 24, 1 28 43 PM.jpg

The problem is: that's supposed to say: 2 UPRIGHT, not 2 FLAT. Bummer! When making contact with Bridgestone, shipping the clubs back, having them bent to the proper lie angle, and shipping back around the Labor Day holiday was all factored in, I've lost about two weeks of review time compared to my compadres. As such, I only have one range session under my belt with the irons. But, oh what a range session it was! I used my Precision Pro Nexus rangefinder to shoot distances to varying targets at my favorite little driving range, Shank's. (Nope, really not kidding; that's the name.)

I started easy, with an A wedge. Beautiful solid feel, and about 10 yards longer than I had anticipated.

attachicon.gif Photo Sep 05, 5 58 06 PM.jpg

This seemed to be a common theme throughout the bag. The Bridgestone lofts are 1 degree stronger through the bag than my Mizuno JPX-825 irons that I have been gaming.

attachicon.gif Bridgestone HF-2 Iron Lofts.png

attachicon.gif Mizuno JPX-825 Lofts.JPG

I really love those Mizuno's, but I think I have a new flame!

First 5-iron I hit, I scorched! Little downhill and into a very slight breeze. Carried at least 200 in the air. I normally hit five iron about 185.

Next one: little slight fade, higher; carried every bit as far!

I'm writing this, of course from the road on business. However, I'm headed home to South Carolina tomorrow, and as long as Hurricane Florence doesn't interfere, I'll be on my way Saturday to SW FL for six days of golf and relaxation! Stay tuned to the Weather Channel, and stay tuned here for a LOT more information after I get back!

Nice job MGB....stay safe down there.

This is a great surprise!!  I posted a few comments about the irons previous to the HF1 and HF2.  The felt amazing and were super long!  I was hitting an 8 iron close to 200 yards...that's a 5 iron in my Srixon Z545's.  The first time I hit them, I thought about running out to grab a drink to wait to see if that ball was ever going to come down.  The one thing I felt those irons lacked was looks.  The definitely weren't going to win a sexy iron contest anytime soon, but did they perform!

I will say those irons would have never went into my bag just because I didn't need that much launch at all.  That didn't stop us from having driving range competitions with them though!  I actually wished they made an in between iron set, and apparently Bridgestone heard me, HF2

I'd love to hear if you guys are able to control the flight with these at all.  I know there were a few comments already regarding distance.  Sounds like we need to put the HF1's against the G700 and the HF2"s against the i500.  Just a thought :)

I'm not one that is able or tries to control flight very much.  As a 17 HC, my swing thought is airborne and forward....ha     I do tend to hit a high ball, so far after only a few rounds I haven't found that to be an issue,  but we haven't had any real strong wind yet.  But I don't expect them to lose much if I do play in the wind.    But that is something I'll keep note of to report back, and maybe one range session, I'll experiment with trying to control the flight a bit lower and see what happens.

So im curious, why didn't anyone choose the HF1's?

All yall's caps are in the same ballpark and it would have been nice to see if maybe the HF1's could have provided a better fit for that hdcp range. Maybe some more distance?

I mean straight and long seems like a nice offering, or as they say, more of a “game enjoyment” iron. That sounds nice to me.

The reviews are wonderful as always, but seems a little redundant?

I wonder, could you get a mixed set?

5,6,7 in HF1

8,9,P in HF2

?

I actually had an explanation in an early draft, but cut it out because I'm already long-winded enough, so here goes.....

As I mentioned, I'm not generally overly concerned about the looks at address. A thicker topline? No big deal. Huge offset? No problem. Mass bulging out behind a 4 iron? So what. My fear was since we had to pick absolutely sight unseen, that I actually would have problems with the appearance of something that nearly amounts to playing a hybrid all through the bag. I also had concerns about something that size getting through thick rough efficiently. Matt and I talked about how we sort of regretted NOT picking them when we played together shortly after we got the HF2's.

I don't know how well a combo set would work out because of the big difference in lofts. I assume you could get them bent enough to fill gaps, but I'm not sure.

It will be interesting to see the long term effect these clubs have on our games, though.

To offset the loft and design differences you could go with a H1: 5 (plays like a 4),6 (plays like a 5), and 7 (plays like a 6) and a H2 7,8,9. Then you have the right gapping along with the forgiveness in the longer irons. I don't really care about the number on the sole as long as the gapping works.

P.S. Great reviews guys, I enjoyed reading them.
