She us in the Yellow Garter band which is a 12 piece sports band. Plays at basketball, softball, volleyball, tailgating. and various other functions. Earnsctio money as well which I hope keeps her out of her savings for awhike. If UO goes to bowl game or NCAA tourny. she gets to go on the Phil Knight plan at zero cost minus personal spending. Pretty cool.

Ah daughters in college - I so fondly remember the tuition $25K/yr - 20 years ago. After graduating with a 3.5, I also remember her saying "I could have probably gotten a 4.0 if I went to class"!

Enjoy every moment with your daughter and relish in her success - time flies so quickly.

I remember that day well.  Dropped her off and she immediately took to a group of "friends".  I hung around for an hour or so after I dropped her stuff off, and she couldn't have cared less that I was even there.  She was thrilled to be out of the house.

Financially speaking, we put her on the yoyo plan.  That is a "you're on your own" plan.  Big mistake on my part for several reasons.

A)  college is a giant financial scam, mostly because the government is in bed with these colleges to suck every last penny out of gullible parents, and naive and ignorant students who think a college education is going to help them get a better job when they graduate.

B)  My daughter got her degree in math.  She's working at Starbucks serving people coffee now, and working two other jobs just to try and make a living.

A college education is about worthless these days.  Beyond a four year social experiment in how fast these kids can dig themselves into debt, it will destroy their self-confidence once the bills start coming due and Sallie Mae starts robo calling you every five minutes to remind you you owe them another payment every other day.

Maybe this is the pessimistic post-college father speaking, but do yourself a favor and if you can't afford to send her to school, don't do it.  If you say it's going to be expensive, weight the ROI on her college education.  So unless she's going into pre-med, or pre-law, or some other degree field that is actually needed for whatever career she is seeking, you are simply throwing your money away.

Honestly, I'd rather be blunt, honest and negative with you now, rather than 4 or 5 years from now when your precious daughter had a bad experience with some professor in some class, and she changed majors to "African Woman's studies" which is good for nothing but wiping your rear end with on the toilet.

Your 18 year old doesn't know anything, even though they think they know everything.  If you are doing this based on emotion, and because she's all sunshine and daisies at the prospect of going off to college, for whatever reason, just know that that college is an ATM to your bank account, and the chances your daughter sees a positive ROI on that education is diminishing by the year.  Do your own research online, but I'm pretty sure that

College is a giant four year party.  If that's your expectation going in, then you'll be fine.  But if you think that degree will actually be worth something when she's done, well, I've got some beach front property in Nevada to sell you.

Sorry to be a downer, but based on my own experience, and the experience of so many other parents of college students my age, this is not something we are adequately prepared to handle with realism and honesty with a 18 year old child filled with emotion and expectations that don't match the bank account.  They want the social experience, and the education is an afterthought 90% of the time.  This is exactly what I witnessed with my daughter, and now she's suffering the $40,000 in debt worth of consequences.

Oh, and DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES CO-SIGN A STUDENT LOAN WITH YOUR CHILD!!!  You are better off just taking out the loan on your own and just paying for that on your own.  Co-signing is a HUGE RED FLAG!!!

Free advice - take it or leave it.

One thing that I'll never forget was when we moved our daughter into her first college apartment when she was eighteen.

We rented a van and her brother helped, of course.

When it was time to go home our daughter closed the door behind us,

Her mother welled up, of course.  And her brother player air guitar.

Every day. Today we just voted in the State primary and now we're sitting in the Lowe's parking lot while she naps and then it's in to get some baseboard and quarter round for the house.

She goes everywhere with me, it's the best thing to happen to my life.

The 529 is a great product. We started a plan for each Gkid when they were born with a pretty good seed start. Now the oldest Gkid is a junior looking at schools and she already has a great start. Luckily for her (and my daughter & son-in-law) schools are scouting her for athletics (softball & volleyball) and a 4.65 GPA so we are hoping for a scholarship.

Anyway 529 is way to go.

My oldest is in her final year of high school, has very little idea of what she wants to do, other than have a “University experience “

She's currently stressing over university preferences, which can be changed after she gets her results. At last count she had about 80 courses listed. Of course she won't listen to her parents about waiting until later.

The younger one has 2 more years, and would love to play Division 2 basketball in the US, again, more interested in the experience than the education, but at least she's up front about it

My daughter is also a senior. She has known since the fourth grade that she wants to go into the nursing field. The whole college application process has been stressful for her. Been applying to colleges and has been accepted at 3 so far including one of her top 2 picks.

Some advice that we were given was to apply to a school that does the 1 week or less acceptance turnaround. Generally not the hardest schools to get into but it helps build the confidence; even that if they have no plans to attend, that they have been accepted somewhere.

We are now in the scholarship application journey.

Sounds like we are in the same boat.  My daughter is ALSO a High School Senior this year.  Applications for scholarships and admissions are in full effect.  The "Fun Part" is talking to coaches and trying to plan all of the campus visits..  I think that I might need here to take a Gap year  to get everything done.
