fixyurdivot
After reading several of the forums "wedge related" threads, and having a handful of you recommend I add some to my bag, I'm on the hunt. @GB13 and a friend of mine have suggested the Ping Glide's. I started looking at all the options; grind, bounce, etc., and need some additional forum intervention. I currently have the PE2 "W" which is listed as a 50.5 deg loft. I have no idea what the specs are on the SW listed in my signature line. I use the PE2 W from around 20-90 yards and closer when I need to go up and over traps, long grass, etc. I only use the SW in traps. I am pretty consistent with the W when I can make full (or near full) swings - distance on throttled swings not so much. I have long employed the use of a 7 and 8 iron for "bump and run" approaches from around the green and do pretty well at getting them into one putt range. I picked this technique up from my Dad who was lights out doing this. What I'm looking to add is a wedge that can help with those intermediate distances; 40-60 yards out that will allow a full swing or nearly so. So based on this information, if you were going to recommend one wedge which one? If you absolutely feel I need two, which two? p.s. I may still have an option to buy the two Vokey wedges recently listed in the classifieds; his other buyer did not come through. Thanks Spy's! I could replace those as well, but was thinking more along the lines of just adding a new wedge for those 40-60 yard shots that I struggle with using the PE2 W. fixyurdivot
Are you planning on taking full swings with them too? Yes, more or less. My thinking here is that I do much better with the PE2 W when I can take full swings or nearly so. If I can find another wedge that allows me to do this from closer in, I'm hoping it will work as well. Even t the range, I can drop lots of shots pretty close together with my existing W with a full swing. When throttling my swing, my distance control goes to hell. If I had $1 for every shot I've made with the PE2 W that came up short... fixyurdivot
Why is it that you only use your SW from traps? Hell, I dunno. Probably for the same reason I still play PE2's, just upgraded from a GBB driver, still play a Warbird 3 wood, and carry a ball retriever... I'm an old school relic. Actually I think it's more because I began copying my Dad's bump and run technique; well that and the club says "sand wedge". Shankster
Are you hitting them fat? Or just distance control issue? I personally would recommend: The Glide 50SS, 54SS, 58SS... they'll have a good amount of bounce. I've hit the Glides and the Glide 2.0, they are a great wedge, and if you like to have a matching set I don't think you can go wrong with them. But I haven't seen your swing, and I am not a fitter. I mean there are 64° options out there that might just go 60 yards on a full swing, but they'll require a lot of practice.

PING Apologist #9
@fixyurdivot, my SGI iron set came with 3 "wedges" originally; 45* PW, 50.5* UW & a 56* SW. Now I've only been really immersed into golf for just less than a year, but the more I played, the more I noticed that I wind up scrambling around the greens a lot and was constantly pulling the all of them out more often than not. For me it started to make sense that having better wedges would possibly help me improve that part of my game and have since swapped all three of those out for my Glides I was fitted to which you see in my signature. It was an instant and positive upgrade and having those babies in my arsenal has given me a higher degree of confidence around the greens since I am way better with them than with the original "stock" ones. Full shots (for me of course) are roughly; 125, 100 & 85. For reference, I hit my 9i around 135 max. That 58* I have is just awesome and I know I can get it close in when I'm in range with it, but really all 3 are superb. When I was researching wedges, I didn't have any idea what "bounce" was, but luckily Randy at Fried Eggs Golf came out with this video; Seeing this assisted me with choosing the bounces I currently use and I hope this helps you kind of see which "bounce" style you may need/like too. As for suggestions/recommendations, I'd guide you into looking at supplementing/adding-to your 50.5 with a 54* and a 58* to have that 4* differential that everyone usually recommends. Check out the chart (below) which lists the various lofts with available sole grinds and voila! Well maybe not "voila"...there are some really good wedges out there other than PING, I know that. Kor.A.Door
Cleveland makes a good wedge also. it seems you are looking for something in a higher loft, say 60°. It would just as important to make sure you get the correct bounce onthe wedge. What type of ground do you encounter regularly? Will you be using it from the sand? From the thick rough? I prefer wedges that have medium bounce for wedges, somewhere in the 8° range. That's what works best for my swing, and allows multiple types of shots. Again get some help on figuring out the bounce. SteddyGolf
Because there are so many bounces, grinds and lofts to choose from I would recommend a fitting. Mark Crossfield has a video on fittings for wedges which is enlightening. I had a Mizuno 50 S18 which I absolutely hated. I couldn't hit it to save my life. I also have an older Cleveland which I tend to shank. My go to wedges are Callaway Mack Daddy's 50 and 54. The F grind is a perfect fit. Finally I have a MiURA 57 wedge. Around the green it is money. It is a 52 degree and has a completely different grind than any other I've seen. Trial and error testing can get expensive fast. Kanoito
If your W is 50* then your SW is about 54-56? So I would assume you need a 58-60* wedge that goes 50ish yards on full swings. However, I much rather hit half a gap wedge 55 yards than a full lob wedge 60 yards. But that's me. RoverRick
As far as what wedges I would recommend is it is totally dependent on your swing and prevalent conditions. I generally go with a 52 with medium bounce. 56 with a high bounce and a 60 with a low bounce and a grind that is easier to open the face. You can pick your lofts and grinds but I suggest that you get different options for each wedge. This gives you the most versatility on the course and in different conditions. Of course, the lofts depend on your irons and preference. I did not like the 50-54-58 and prefer the 52-56-60. Kenny B
There are so many good wedges out there, it's difficult to go wrong. Since you have PE2, you probably know your lie angle based on the dot color, and what fits you. A good wedge can be bad if the lie angle is wrong for you. We all recommend seeing a fitter, but at least have the lie angle checked wherever you go. “We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”

Okay, I would recommend 50° with the SS for standard full swings and most chips. The 54° with the ES or WS for most bunker shots and full shots. And finally, the 60° with the TS for touch shots around the green where you need to open the face, and some bunkers with hard packed sand. deauxrite
My experience is that the greater the loft on your wedge the steeper the learning curve is regardless of the amount of bounce..also the more practice is takes to hit quality shots. I am not saying that it can't be done, but it requires a lot of practice to hit good shots from 50-60 yards with a 58-62 degree wedge.
