Things that could make hole in one less significant

I've never had one (someday pleeeease), but I'm curious, which of these scenarios would take away some of the prestige of the ACE?   Some I think are obvious, but curious on everyone's opinion...maybe you've had one of these.

1. On a Par 3 (or executive) Course (I guess the only diff here is you get more shots at it, I would still count it)

2. During a scramble

3. The dreaded 'Playing by yourself w/ no witnesses'

4. They are repairing a tee box and have temporarily shortened the hole significantly (like it's normally a 180yd par 3 that is playing at 100yds)

5. Hit your first in the drink, re-tee and knock it in (yes this is technically just a par, but are you putting that ball on the shelf?)

Any others you can think of, chime in

A blind short par 4, or even a blind par 3 (played one thats 175yds over a large mound so you cannot see the green at all).

or a complete mis-hit/thin that scuttles along the ground, round the edge of a bunker and smashes into the flag but falls in.

I saw exactly this at the 220yd 17th hole Queens course at Gleneagles. a 12 yr old boy topped a driver that ran all the way around steep contours onto a very long and hilly green and it found the bottom of the cup!

The boy had turned away in disgust about his topped drive and didn't see it go in. We were all jumping for joy and he had a dark cloud over his head ;)

2. During a scramble

It's interesting that you mention this one, because we were discussing this last night in our weekly Tuesday evening league, which is 6 years old, where we play every Tuesday during daylight savings time, and we've never had anyone make a hole-in-one in the six years in the league.

Now, I'll give you two other scenarios that were similar to a hole-in-one in our league that happened, but we've never had an ace.

Last year we had one guy who holed a 3 wood from the fairway on a par 5 for a double eagle.

Two years ago I holed a 7 iron from 160 yards out in the fairway for an eagle on a par 4.

I would actually say that the albatross is far more miraculous, considering you are most likely over 200+ yards out, probably hitting 3 wood or some other long club, which makes accuracy that much more difficult.

But I do find it odd that with all of the players in our league (we averaged over 37 players a week this year, and over 900 golfers in total) that there has never been a hole-in-one.  I guess that speaks to the significance of it, and how rare it truly is.

Gimmicky pin placement (this might go with "during a scramble" as mentioned above) in which all balls funnel toward the hole.

"better lucky than good" sometimes I guess. That scenario would definitely spoil a hole in one for me. I'd feel like I'd won a lottery of sorts, none of the sense of accomplishment you get from a good shot or round.

A three after a stroke and distance penalty would certainly not go on the wall.

A temporary tee just makes it a shorter hole-in-one,

but I can see that a real hole not being aced could take away from the rush.

A scramble wouldn't detract for me.

A playing partner didn't make the ace.

You did.

Playing by yourself eliminates certification, but you would know.

A bit of a diminishing factor because you have to buy the plaque yourself.

An executive course wouldn't diminish anything for me.

I enjoyed playing them once in a while, and I did.

I can't imagine a blind par three.

A short par four that's only blind from the tee would take away from the thrill a little, i suppose.

To me, any blind shot not caused by a bad drive is a call for a bulldozer.

I broke all odds NOT making one in the long time that I played.

I've made more than one on a pitch and putt course--shorter and smaller than a real executive course,

but that wouldn't count.

I've made a double eagle two.

No plaques for that.

Didn't even save the ball.

Nothing.

I've done the Short Par 4 blind tee shot ace.

The 113 yard Ace.

And the Re-Tee for a par “ace”

I only have one of the balls saved. And it is the one I made with my son that the course wouldn't honor because my witness was “too young”.

Putting a ball in the hole from even 2 yards off the green should be more celebrated. You are putting a tiny arse ball in a tiny arse hole from anywhere.

Shoot... even a 10'+ putt should be more celebrated.

Closely related to the topped shot that scuttles along the ground into the hole would be another letdown of a hole-in-one: the shank or pull that ricochets off a tree onto the green and into the cup.

There is a guy back home that many years before I was even alive scored a the water hazard "ace" and has claimed it as legit since then.  Thankfully there are people who admit this caveat for him.  That plaque and ball belong in the pond with his original tee shot.

If I somehow have to re-tee and hit 3 off the tee, I am not aiming for the pin.

I will stop playing golf if make a "1 for 3"

There wouldn't be a more miserable golf feeling

A good friend of mine who help introduce me to the game back in 1991 had an Ace at his home course in Naples, FL about 10 years ago.  He was 82.  His son was playing with him.  His son's account of it was that the final hole of the course was a par 3 with a pond in front of the green, but there was fairway around the pond on the left.  His dad hit driver intending to fade it around the pond, which he did.  However, the ball never left the ground, all the way to the hole.  It was his 2nd hole-in-one.  His first came at age 41.  Naturally, he thought his 3rd would come at age 123.  He passed away at age 85 while playing on that golf course.

To me... they are all Aces except #5.

Nothing. With a caveat.

If I get to write a 1 on the scorecard, I don't care how it happens.

If I hit the ball in the water and then in the hole, it's 3 on the card so not a hole-in-one IMO

1. On a Par 3 (or executive) Course (I guess the only diff here is you get more shots at it, I would still count it)

I'd count it too. In fact I'll be playing an 18-hole par three course next week. If I make a 1 it's a 1. With our gambling I'd say get out your wallet fellows.

2. During a scramble

Hate scrambles but will play them once in a long while for a charity I support. Still.... it's an Ace! Kind of like when I made my HIO during a partnership tournament. Legit.

3. The dreaded 'Playing by yourself w/ no witnesses'

Hasn't happened to me while alone but... should I make one I'll certainly tell my friends. They'd rib me for sure.

4. They are repairing a tee box and have temporarily shortened the hole significantly (like it's normally a 180yd par 3 that is playing at 100yds)

It's still an Ace! But I wouldn't want it printed in the paper.

5. Hit your first in the drink, re-tee and knock it in (yes this is technically just a par, but are you putting that ball on the shelf?)

    No Ace. Lot's of vomit.

1-4 are all the same for me. All holes in one and I am really happy about it.

5- well, it isn't a hole in one and I would be terribly disappointed BUT I would still keep the ball as it would be my longest hole out ever.

I have had tons of near misses but no HIOs. (Yet)

What about a non-official shot?

Example: A while back on business, we snuck in some golf on a travel day. Didn't have enough daylight for 18 but still had some left after 9. We decided to play closest to the pin for a dollar from 10 tee over a pond to one of the back 9 greens (140ish yards).

I hit a pink rock ball that landed on the "front" but the green sloped away from us so severely the hole couldn't be seen. Threw my PW into my bag and drove over to the green. Didn't find it so I figured it was lost and only found out it went in when one of the other guys walked by the hole.

Double whammy. Didn't see it go in and didn't hit it during a real round. As far as I'm concerned, it didn't happen.

Edit: No chance, they didn't pay their dollars

That in my mind is a Hole in One.

Did the ball go in the hole? Yes

Was it on the first shot? Yes

Was it from the tee box? Yes

Therefore, it is a hole in one to me.

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't see that it wasn't to the 10th green.

Not a hole in one but really great shot.

The is a hole at Coyote Lakes here in AZ, #13 100 yards on a good day. A guy I was playing with to be funny hit a chipper club and bounced it in. After 4!or five bounces. Was absolutely hilarious . To this day the ugliest great shot I have ever seen, if that makes sense.

I would say it would be bitter sweet to hit a topped shot or a shank and hole out, I would take it, just would take some of the glory away from it. Like was said above lucky to be lucky than good sometimes.

I have had one ace in my life. 142 yard #12 at Los Caballeros In Wickenburg AZ. 9 iron about 10 feet passed the pin and spun it back it. The only down fall is I was using a Pro V ball with a Prudential logo, so now I have the ball on display with the annoying logo.

If I aced 17 and the entire rest of the round was complete garbage, I would be pretty disappointed.

My buddy made his ace in a scramble and we all went crazy. My cousin in the other cart sprinted the last 60 or so yards to the green to see if it had actually gone in.
