2018 Official Forum Member Review - Ben Hogan Ft. Worth Black Irons

I hope the reviewers can comment on what they are seeing with the progressive sole widths.  As already touched on by a few, it seems to be the complete opposite of just about every other set out there (where long irons being the narrowest and scoring irons being wider).

Haven't had a chance to get on a launch monitor but the flight visually seems lower in the long irons for me. Not totally sure with the short irons if there is any flight difference.

Haven't noticed a big difference in the flight myself, that being said I love the flight on the 6 iron 😄

In all honesty, I've been surprised by the long irons so far.

My usual long irons are Srixon 765s, so a bit of a cavity back with Modus 105 shafts.

These being a very thin blade with a Dynamic Gold I was expecting to be difficult to get height with, but so far I'm surprised. Mostly off range mats, but it'll be interesting to see when I test on the rapidly softening ground here.

Okay, it's time for a bit of an update on these irons.

There were two particularly important questions people had with these irons.
1) How well would the black finish last
2) Could we really believe Hogan that the long-irons are easy to hit high?

So, let's give you a quick mid-term.

Here's my pitching wedge, it's hit probably a little over 400 shots by this point.
This is it immediately after tonight's practice session.

IMG_20181010_223916_010.jpg

And here's that same club after a quick spit and wipe down. It still looks almost like new so far

20181010_211344.jpg

Impressive to me, so far and they remain beautiful.
Far more important to most of us, though. With those ultra-thin long iron blades, can you really trust in them to fly high? 😉

He uses a 5-iron, that's way more lofted and does it off soft, forgiving fairway. He's practically cheating 😉

I play musclebacks and am hoping someone can do a thorough rundown of turf interaction. That's my #1 question on these irons. Possibly a side by side with a similar club i.e. blade/mb

As @PMookie has added pictures of the sole of his Pitching Wedge I won't duplicate, but can confirm I am seeing similar "wear", which is to say that once cleaned they still look practically new despite having had hefty use.

I do have one slight update on that, but I think I'll save it for the stage 2.

I also took a few more videos last night, but I'll save you guys too many videos of a ball being hit down a range for now. Just watching them back though, these irons have an amazingly distinct sound, it's incredibly "solid". I'm also finally getting used to the difference in feel between these and my old clubs so my swing has smoothed out a bit more as it feels back to natural.

In other news, I built a practice area in my back garden last weekend with a full-size cage and a Real Feel mat, while my launch monitor arrived today so you'll be getting lots more goodies in terms of information for this review! I'm excited for this evening and the coming days, having free access to data on these should be great...

Thanks you guys for all the info you have provided so far. Because of it I had gone ahead and purchased the Blacks and love them.
I've had a couple of range sessions and will be getting them out on the course this weekend, but can't say enough about how good these irons feel. They are so easy to work the ball with.

I'll second that on experience with the DBM finish. My current irons are DBM finished. If they're anything like the set that I currently play, there won't be ANY notable wear on them by the end of stage 2. Some of these other OEM's need to take note of what a good black finish is and that they don't need to karate chop someone in the throat to apply it .. hm hmcallawaytaylormade....

Well, went to a buddy’s place last night to hit these vs Ping i210 on a TrackMan and to gather some data. I hit three consecutive shots with a Hogan club, followed by 3 consecutive shots with a Ping. After going through the data today, I really didn’t see what I’ve seen on-course comparing these two. Not sure the TrackMan was set correctly......... Oh well, but I do have some data.

Took both sets to the range this morning and hit 6, 7, & 8 from each set. If I’d have had the TrackMan today, it would’ve been better! I’ve really gotten a sense for these irons, especially compared to my MP-18 SCs and the i210s. I was planning to play tomorrow AM before I head out of town for work for 7 days, but the rain might hinder that.

A lot of questions on whether the black finish is holding up, and as y’all have read, yes, it is. When I scrub out dirt with my brush, it does affect the color for a second, but once the face is wiped with a moist towel, the color comes right back.

Feel? Yeah, when these babies are hit well, they have THAT feel! Just nice! One definitely knows they’ve just flushed a forged club!!!

I said in my Stage 1 that I really want to put the claim of 4* of loft difference between clubs yields better gapping. Well, you’ll see the data from last night in my Stage 2, but it’s not showing to be as significant as it seems it would be.

Going between the black and chrome when comparing shots, the black definitely look smaller to me.

I really want another round before I have to do the Stage 2, but there is no doubt these are forged blades/muscle-backs. The feel is there! The misses are there too for this 6 handicap.... I’ll get into all this a bit later, but I wanted to give y’all some insights.

You've got me THIS close to pulling the trigger on a set of these! Very curious to see your stage 2 comments on the misses since my handicap aligns with yours and I'd imagine the "misses" percentage is close too.

Well, two days in-a-row of hitting these vs the Pings and both days revealed very similar results. Yesterday I hit off a mat and some tight Bermuda at the range, and today I hit from a little bit thicker grass, more like a “first cut” of rough. Feel, straight shots, and sound were all there, but different than the Pings.
I took a number of pictures to show the residue from the mats and then the sole after cleaning. I also took some pics of my i210 face after hitting from the sandy range. Quite a difference!
I’m going to type-up my Stage 2, so if anyone has any last questions before I start it, feel free to ask!!!

Not sure if anyone asked this if so I'm sorry but I can't remember everything said lol. How is the feel compared to the pings? I'm sure you'll note about that and about distance differences between the two.

The Ft. Worths are forged, so when well-struck, they feel like a forged club should. The i210s feel different. Not worse, not better, just different. Like most clubs I’ve played, with both of these, one knows when they’ve not made great contact.

I'm with @PMookie here and slowly heading towards my write-up.
I've not managed to get as many rounds in over the last couple of weeks as I'd like, but I've been making up for it with home range time and should have plenty of launch monitor figures for you guys.
I plan to try to fit in one, maybe two rounds this weekend now some of my work has calmed down and then write-up, so if anyone has remaining questions they'd like us to consider, please feel free to raise them :)

Proud owner of a slowly approaching complete archive of Titleist's blades circa 2000-2014 and a Wilson FatShaft CI10 blade putter in perfect condition (seriously, try Googling it and look at the state of the few that show up) which I bought when at college and just happens to look like it's stamped with my daughter's name, born 14 years after I bought it...

Ditto! Haven't been able to play as much as I would have liked thanks to a busier schedule and weather but have gotten tons of range work with these. Hopefully I can squeeze a couple of more range and playing sessions in before Stage 2 is posted
