local driving range sold

My local driving range recently sold. Didnt realize it was even for sale!! Turns out the guy who bought is a guy I talk to and have played a few holes with at the club.

He takes over Monday at noon. Spoke to him last night. He was excited, nervous, and hopeful, and seems to have a decent plan going. Ill miss the old owners, but excited to see what changes are in order.

The good thing is from what I gather from your post is that it will still be a driving range and not a strip mall or houses. That last part is happening way too much down here with golf courses and driving ranges. Maybe with the recent and ongoing events happening down here due to hurricane Florence more folks may realize maybe they really do not want to move here after all.

Unless you have a good business plan that maximizes every transaction a driving range is a difficult business in which to maintain profitability. I think what you see far to often is good hearted golf enthusiasts getting into the driving range business with little to no business experience. From customer service to daily operations onto projected earnings and capital reinvestment they tend to just get lost in the murky waters of trying to remain profitable.

 

When output exceeds input the real estate speculators come calling with a very attractive check. Unless you are already independently wealthy that check is hard to turn down.

As I look at my area there are plenty of driving ranges associated with golf courses but only one that I know of that is not. My county has a million people in it. My guess is that it's much easier for a range to be profitable if it's course associated

The guy that owns my club (Pebble Creek) also owns three other clubs and two driving ranges. 3 of the 4 golf clubs have driving ranges, mine does not.

Two ranges, at least that I know of, have sold / closed this year to make way for (more...) commercial development. Also one, again at least that I know of, area course closed to get turned into a solar farm .. good for the environment, I guess!

I would think a driving range would be very profitable.Since so many complain about lack of  time available for actually playing real golf.Even remember a time when our local driving ranges were jam packed open until close.Golf is surely changing.

We had one near us and it was always packed lunchtime and evenings during the week.

I really don't think that's the case, depending on where you're located.

The driving range near my office has changed hands 4 times in 5 years. It's closed from maybe late November until April, so that eats into profit. When you think about taxes on a larger plot of land required for a range, upkeep, equipment repairs and replacements, insurance/benefits you may be required to pay into even if you only hire part timers... I'd think it could get expensive pretty quickly.

Better than the one by me that sold to a certain local population so they can building housing units for their community (and don't pay taxes on)

Worst part, I didn't use the last 6 of my "bucket card".. they wouldn't honor it/give store credit at their new shop
