Mizuno JPX 919 Hot Metal vs. Mizuno MP-18 MMC FliHi

MWGolf23

Recommended Posts

I'm looking into possibly updating my 4 iron from MP-18 SC to the MMC FliHi or the JPX 919 Hot Metal. Haven't found a direct comparison. Curious how they differ. I looked at the MPF numbers for the FliHi and 900 Hot Metal, (919 line MPF numbers not out yet) and it shows that the Hot Metal is more forgiving and more playable. I imagine the 900 and 919 are fairly similar in these numbers. Anybody test these head-to-head or have any additional insight? Thanks!

I would go Fli Hi. It is more of a true driving iron. The Hot Metal is closer to the MMC

Thanks for the quick reply! What makes you come to that conclusion?

I have the Fli Hi in a 2 iron and it is super easy to hit.

I could only imagine how easy a 4 iron would be to hit.

If you have enough game to play the SC then you definitely have the game to play the Fli Hi. The Fli Hi is a little more workable and allows better trajectory control which is important especially if you are using it as a driving iron.

The Hot Metal is much more of a GI/SGI club, so it will fly high and straight. If high and straight is what you want, you should look at a hybrid.

I have hit them all!  Hot Metal is an absolutely fantastic club, but it has a ton of offset compared to even the MMC Fli Hi.  I think the 919 Hot Metal will be the top performing GI iron for a lot of people, and it feels and looks fantastic.  However seeing that you are playing the MP 18 SC (which are similar in size/forgiveness to the 919 Forged), I think the Fli Hi would be the better option.  The regular MMC is great, but the Fli Hi is going to launch the ball a bit easier.

Awesome insight, thanks! What does your iron set up look like? I'm considering a 2 driving iron as well. Have never tried a driving iron but I am drawn to it's flight.

My set up is as follows:

Driver, 3W, 2 iron, 4-PW, 50°(bent to 49°) 52° (bent to 53°)

58°(bent to 57°).

For me adding the 2 iron ment I had to leave off a lob wedge, but that hasn't hindered me at all. I also left out the 3 iron, because it I would rather have a 20 yard gap at the top than in the wedges.

My top of the bag distances are:

D-280 3W- 245 2 iron-220 4 iron-200

This is the optimal setup for me.

It leaves the gaps where I can work with them.

I hit the 2 iron really low. My apex is maybe 20 feet but playing in MN wind, it is exactly what I needed. I use it mainly for driving on tight holes or holes that are into the wind and for approaches into par 5's. It isn't a one trick pony for me.

Nice. When I hit everything perfect, my driver is 275-290, 3W off the tee 260, 5W off the tee 240 (I struggle with my woods off the deck so that's why I'm also intrigued by driving irons), 3/4 hybrid 220 (but I don't like how hybrids tend to over draw). Would like the 4 to be more workable than the hybrid. Just have been inconsistent too much with the 4 SC.

The 919 tours and forged look grrat The. mygolfspy JPX line up write up indicates that the Tours are close in forgiveness to the MMCs. If you look at the MPF numbers for 6 irons that follows that statement with 900s at least. Very close. They actually rank the SCs harder to play than the blades because the actual vertical center of gravity is really high. MOI was higher though. Playability for Mizunos went SCs > blades > 900 Tours > MMC > 900 forged > FliHi > 900 Hot Metal

That's were statistics lie a little bit. I can guarantee that the blades are harder to play than the SC's. I don't entirely trust a source like that because numbers can be twisted to say what you want them too. I

I hit everything side by side at a Mizuno demo day a few weeks ago.

Tours are most similar to the mp 18 blades. Don't really have much of a cavity at all. It's a really just slightly more perimeter weighting than the mp 18

Forged compares to the SC. Barely any offset, nice top line, cavity.

Hot metal to MMC is the best comparison.

I've hit the 900 tours and 900 hot metals. I couldn't tell the difference between the tours and SC's in the feel. I hit my buddy's 919 forged last weekend and it's a lot bigger and more forgiving than the SC.

Well to be fair, those numbers are just measurements and not biased. It could be an error, or it could be correct But I believe the SCs are most likely easier to hit as well. Regardless, there isn't much difference between the blades and SCs anyways. Those numbers reported would indicate it would be easier to hit the SCs if the miss was more toe or heel which I imagine is the most common misses for better players, because of more MOI/bigger sweet spot horizontally, but would be slightly harder than the blade to hit if you are a shallower swinger, and less compression because the ACOG is higher than the blade and the center of the ball/COG of the ball. It's something to think about and consider but thought I'd bring it up because it goes against the chronological order of the MP-18 line and is a good debate topic. I haven't really seen that from any other OEM numbers. Thought I'd share!

I struggled with over drawing hybrids until i found the 818 h2

I've been able to open the face and get a tiny little fade sometimes, or tame down the draw, but if I want to hit a draw it can take off on me. Is the 818 h2 less closed at address than most hybrids? I know most hybrids are closed, including mine. Cobra King F7. I'm putting my hosel all the way down to the 3iron loft, which opens the club face a few degrees and see what that does. Looking forward to the 4 HiFli!

818 h2 is neutral at address, can be adjusted to play flatter and has the weight cartridge that can be put in it to make it fade biased

Appreciate the insight! Will go FliHi in the 4! Oh no another question. Does your 2 iron have the C Taper Lite? That comes standard with them? I actually have the C Taper Lite shafts for my iron set. Perfect combo so far. Very pleased with it.

I put a recoil 95 (lighter) so I could swing faster and launch a little higher. It was easier to launch and and feels smoother. That was just my personal preference and the C taper lite is a great shaft and will work well too.

That might be a good thing to consider if going higher than a 4 in the future to get that extra help with launch.
