This week the LPGA takes a break from its official tournament schedule, for the playing of the International Crown. This is a biennial event that will take place in even numbered years, as opposed to the Solheim Cup's odd numbered years. It is a global matchplay competition that will feature 8 countries battling for the rights to be called "The World's Best Golf Nation."

Here is my preview and much more:

Curious how the players from each country were picked. Do they have a captain like the Ryder or Solheim cup?

Also interesting that Wie is one of the US foursomes. She hasn't done that well and tends to be injury prone.

If I remember it’s based solely on rankings. I think it’s the Top 4 golfers per country based on their world rank.

Here is the team and player selection process:

Team Selection
The field of eight countries was determined by the combined Rolex World Ranking of the top four players from each country as of the Rolex World Rankings published on June 3,2018. Countries must have a minimum of four ranked players to be eligible. Note that this date will determine the eight countries that qualify for the event. It does not guarantee a spot on the team for the four players whose rankings were used to calculate the country rank.
Player Selection
The final field of 32 players will be determined via the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings published after the conclusion of the 2018 KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. At this point, the top-4 ranked players from each pre-qualified country will qualify for their respective country’s team.
Note: If a player ranked in the top-4 of a pre-qualified country chooses not to compete, or is unable to compete, the spot will be filled by the next highest ranked, available player from the Rolex Women’s World Golf Ranking for that country, dating back to the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings published at the conclusion of the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. ** Substitutions will not be allowed once pairings are published for the first round of the matches.

Yes they are picked solely by their position in the Rolex Rankings. There is no captain. The above link to my blog explains it all.

Sounds like the weather is killing them - hope it turns better for them and they can finish. US is doing better than I expected.

This format sounds a lot like the World Golf Cup idea being discussed in the Ryder Cup Week thread.

US ladies did a decent job. Tough to win when you don't have the home course advantage.

I can't say that South Korea winning was a surprise.  South Korea's average Rolex World Ranking for their players is 10... the USA average ranking is 14... and the England average ranking is 41.

South Korean players played great as I would expect, but given the team makeup, I say that tying for second, England played great team golf.

We don’t stop playing the game because we get old; we get old because we stop playing the game.”
