Maybe the powers that be will do something about the lack of shouting now when a rock travelling at 160MPH is heading for your face!

The amount of pro's who either do nothing or just hold up an arm to indicate the balls direction is quite poor. If you don't want to shout have your highly paid caddy or marshals doing it.

I get it that at noisy venues such as the RC or a Major it might not be possible to hear a shout from 300 yards away, but something needs to be done.

I don't think spectators should be allowed so close to the fairway. Maybe 15 yards off the fairway. You can still see fine but you odds of getting hit go down significantly.

Here's a thought, if you are going to spend the time, effort, and money to go to a golf tournament, and stand near the fairway 250-350 yards from the tee box,  PAY ATTENTION to players teeing off. When you are on the side and the player raises that arm, cover your head. It's not like balls are constantly flying down that fairway.

Yes, by purchasing the ticket you accept the risk. If you park your car near a course, you accept the risk. If you build a house on the course, you accept the risk. However, if you drive a golfcart through the club house window, it is your fault. I know that from experience.

Sad story. I always wondered when this would happen.  It amazes me just how close folks are willing to get to players shot paths blindly (no pun intended) putting faith in the players capability.  When I marshaled at The Boeing Classic, we were told to keep them back at 45 deg angle from the ball - or at least try too.  I was also amazed how many folks would park themselves along the drive landing zones and then carry on as if they weren't in a hazard area.  Talking, screwing around, and generally not paying attention as groups were teeing off.   

It will be interesting to see how the legal action plays out.  I suspect the players and/or individuals have coverage, but as has been pointed out and much like at MLB games, the ticket clearly states that you attend at your own risk.  Short of gross negligence, BK turned 90 degrees and aimed at the crowds, the player is not liable.

If you are on the course you assume all risks and you might want to pay attention. For tee shots the marshall on the tee is indicating direction ball is going and they wave nice big bright “wands” so seeing them is easy. If they are waving in your direction be ready for the ball to come that way.

its not like baseball where they can put up a net to protect fans. What makes live golf awesome compared to other sports is the proximity you get to the players. Let’s not pull a us open at chambers bay where the fans were no where near the players.

I’m surprised “she’s considering legal action”. If it happened in the US there would already be a settlement.

I know it sounds bad but I don’t think she has a case. I believe (on the pga Tour at least) the ticket has a disclaimer on the back saying the tour and it’s players aren’t responsible for injuries. I could be wrong though, either way hopefully she gets taken care of one way or another.

"Considering legal action!?!?!"  Isn't there some implied consent when choosing to attend a sporting event?  Isn't that implied consent printed right on the back of the ticket?

I feel for this lady for losing sight in one eye but she chose to be in the position that led to the injury.

I’m sure BK will do something, and when they go back to Europe for the Cup in 2022 they’ll have some reunion story.

Side note, I think BK would have rather played for Thomas.

It would not surprise me if he does just that.  It would also not surprise me that the PGA and/or most players  have liability insurance.  Knowing that it was your errant shot that left someone blind in an eye would be tough to haul around the rest of ones life.  This could very well get into Brooks head and adversely affect his game.

Most have hit someone at one time or another- a signed glove or ball and all forgotten. This is different due to it's life changing injury.

Yeah I know. But I believe Ernie’s knocked the guy out. I read the article a while ago, terrible outcome for the lady that BK hit...

But I feel the same way I do about golf as sitting right next to the fence at a NASCAR race... both are traveling around the same speed. 150+ mph....

If I were to ever make it to a golf tournament I’d either be by the tee or green.

It’s a very sad story -

Limited liability statements are there to be challenged. Just because the ticket says it doesn’t mean it will stand up in court.

But you do have to be aware of flying objects when you attend a golf tournament. It’s just sad.

Purportedly a lawsuit has already been filed according to GC. It a shame it happened. Horrible situation for the victim.
