D v D 2

Driver vs Driver 2, anyone watching, I just can’t get over the judges. Not sure if they are the best ones to determine this. The first night was super slow, I did like a couple designs, they made one sense. Then there were a couple that were just plain bad. I am going to try to watch more just to see the process. I like the design and engineering process of it all.

I am watching/half watching. It is something to have on while I am sitting around in the evening. I just think it is interesting hearing about the engineering and design process. Lots of ideas that never pan out. I am interested in hearing some of the testers that get shown later in the show.

I watched on and off last night during my online schooling. I was really intrigued by the driver with the removable crown. The thought of being able to hide all the moveable weights would give the driver a clean look. The only problem would be the screws on top.

I also thought the driver design named “no sex” was funny especially coming from an 84 year old. My first thought was I change drivers too often to marry one!

I hope the guy with the concept that JR said was a video game controller can make it through.  I thought he really brought the idea of a "concept" driver to the forefront.  In regards to the judges, I like Shiels and the Wilson President.  JR brings a touch of consumer to the bench, but not sure I like him as a judge.  I am ready for the designs to start hitting golf balls!

Yeah, I’m not sure on the judges myself. The president make sense, not sure on a hockey player and a internet tester/blogger as the other 2. I think on the alien spaceship concept there is  just way too much going on. There’s a few of what I would call gimmicky designs, when I see them I think of the “hammer” informercials, not sure I want to see those get through to hitting balls. There a few designs I think have a good look and some decent technology, whether or not they can actually build the concept and get it to function properly may be an issue for some of them.

I was really shocked at a few that even made it to Chicago.  Namely the upside down putter with the magnetized weights and the "No Sex".  I guess it makes it a little easier to weed out a few of the contestants.  In terms of the alien spaceship, I agree that there was too much going on.  However, I think if they isolate one or two of the ideas in that concept then they could really be on to something.

... Well, Wilson got a bunch of guys on a golf forum talking about the show so mission accomplished. : )  I doubt the "judges" have final say in anything and imagine it is a decision made by Wilson execs. Imo, Wilson needs to do the opposite of thinking outside the box and come up with a classic looking driver with some technology that performs as well as the M4, F8, Rogue and G400. I kinda liked the circle inside the head to marry the crown and sole. Jailbreak works and this would be the same concept but completely different and could come in a very classy looking head. The last thing I think Wilson needs is a driver with a watch arm on the bottom which will sell for $99 by next summer.

Chisag, absolutely, the execs of Wilson will make the final decisions, along with the input from the judges. I also think that there are a 2-3 of these designs that really look nice, and if they are actually able to make the technology ideas work, they could have some really nice drivers. Some others I think are just too “gimmicky” looking if that’s the word to use. I think with some of them, it’s being able to get the ideas into an actual club and hitting it, to see if the ideas actually work. Some of these ideas have merit, it’s just whether or not it works.

The magnetized weights make sense in the way he wants to use them, but the look needs work, and there needs to be a way to fix them to the driver, the USGA won’t allow them to be “floating” on the club. That one could be interesting depending upon the R&D team at Wilson and what they will adjust to the look.

I agree with you on the design principle.  I hope he teams up with someone with a more conventional design.  The original aesthetics were killing me.   @chisag I am interested to see how the "jailbreak circle" inside the clubhead design does in the competition.  Something tells me that I saw an idea similar to that on some marketing piece from Callaway detailing the development of jailbreak, but I don't remember.  Can we go ahead and get to the next episode already!?

The magnet driver has some merit in theory, will be interesting to see how it comes out. I am waiting for Rick Shields to review the winner on his YouTube channel on GC Quad with a Titleist Pro V1 to get his numbers will be interested to see how it does against his “gamer”.

Will it fit "right in" his performance window?

I watched it and enjoyed seeing the initial designs as they will look differently at the end after the Wilson guys work on them and adjustments are made. Melanie Williams is ALWAYS nice to see.........

I highly doubt it. That is rarified air to be in that window

So, the judges say that a few designs could do better by combining efforts, and only 2 of 6 take them up on the offer, how prideful are you, basically if all of them said yes combine only 2 of 6 designers are being sent home.  I am shocked that some of them said no. I would have jumped at the chance to combine. You could see the judges were really disappoint in the last 2 designers, but it’s their loss for not wanting to work with someone.

... Especially since the judges told them their designs on their own are not strong but engineers think a combination of two designs could be interesting. TV speak for "join up or get cut." So I was shocked they didn't join forces. The engineers that will forget more about club head design than these guys will ever know, wanted them to combine and the hubris to say no was just astounding.

@Kor.A.Door@chisag I was initially surprised that Wilson assigned groups for the designers versus allowing them to choose themselves.  Then even more shocked at 2/3rds of them refused to work with one another.   Props to the three guys that joined forces, they are my new "favorites".    I hope they  dig a little deeper with the engineers next week  on the design properties side vs the aesthetics.

Really interesting to see what's in Rick's bag.  G400LST, Wilson V6, Evnroll ; I think he might be "one of us".

What is everyone's favorite design so far? Personally rooting for Tim Slama since he is from Salem plus I think his infinity track design actually has the highest "sales floor" of all the current designs. I think the one with the internal frame could be the big winner performance wise though if it can actually stay together

I’m not sure of my favorite so far, the young kid and the infinity has some merit and a good design, it will be interesting to see how that changes throughout the process. Maybe in he next couple shows I will see a clear favorite. I think some of the designs could be really good if they can make them work correctly.

I watched a portion of the second episode again today, and I am still scratching my head at the guys that said no to combining forces, and now all of the “no’s” are eliminated.
