cnosil
I am watching/half watching. It is something to have on while I am sitting around in the evening. I just think it is interesting hearing about the engineering and design process. Lots of ideas that never pan out. I am interested in hearing some of the testers that get shown later in the show. GolfSpy_BNG
I watched on and off last night during my online schooling. I was really intrigued by the driver with the removable crown. The thought of being able to hide all the moveable weights would give the driver a clean look. The only problem would be the screws on top. I also thought the driver design named “no sex” was funny especially coming from an 84 year old. Kor.A.Door
Yeah, I’m not sure on the judges myself. The president make sense, not sure on a hockey player and a internet tester/blogger as the other 2. I think on the alien spaceship concept there is just way too much going on. There’s a few of what I would call gimmicky designs, when I see them I think of the “hammer” informercials, not sure I want to see those get through to hitting balls. There a few designs I think have a good look and some decent technology, whether or not they can actually build the concept and get it to function properly may be an issue for some of them. chisag
... Well, Wilson got a bunch of guys on a golf forum talking about the show so mission accomplished. : ) I doubt the "judges" have final say in anything and imagine it is a decision made by Wilson execs. Imo, Wilson needs to do the opposite of thinking outside the box and come up with a classic looking driver with some technology that performs as well as the M4, F8, Rogue and G400. I kinda liked the circle inside the head to marry the crown and sole. Jailbreak works and this would be the same concept but completely different and could come in a very classy looking head. The last thing I think Wilson needs is a driver with a watch arm on the bottom which will sell for $99 by next summer. Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... Ventus Red Velocore 5R Fairway: Qi10 5 wood ... Kor.A.Door
Chisag, absolutely, the execs of Wilson will make the final decisions, along with the input from the judges. I also think that there are a 2-3 of these designs that really look nice, and if they are actually able to make the technology ideas work, they could have some really nice drivers. Some others I think are just too “gimmicky” looking if that’s the word to use. I think with some of them, it’s being able to get the ideas into an actual club and hitting it, to see if the ideas actually work. Some of these ideas have merit, it’s just whether or not it works. The magnetized weights make sense in the way he wants to use them, but the look needs work, and there needs to be a way to fix them to the driver, the USGA won’t allow them to be “floating” on the club. That one could be interesting depending upon the R&D team at Wilson and what they will adjust to the look. I hope he teams up with someone with a more conventional design. The original aesthetics were killing me. @chisag I am interested to see how the "jailbreak circle" inside the clubhead design does in the competition. Something tells me that I saw an idea similar to that on some marketing piece from Callaway detailing the development of jailbreak, but I don't remember. Kor.A.Door
So, the judges say that a few designs could do better by combining efforts, and only 2 of 6 take them up on the offer, how prideful are you, basically if all of them said yes combine only 2 of 6 designers are being sent home. I am shocked that some of them said no. I would have jumped at the chance to combine. You could see the judges were really disappoint in the last 2 designers, but it’s their loss for not wanting to work with someone. JohnSmalls
@Kor.A.Door@chisag I was initially surprised that Wilson assigned groups for the designers versus allowing them to choose themselves. Then even more shocked at 2/3rds of them refused to work with one another. Props to the three guys that joined forces, they are my new "favorites". I didn’t watch the first one but I’m watching this years and I like it. Blake I don’t think this was predetermined, they made the offer for 6 designers to group together to make 3 separate teams, and they would choose the 2 best of those 3, essentially the ones that said no sealed their fate, the judges said that the design wasn’t good enough to go through on their own, and would be better suited if you were to team up and combine designs. It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to read between the lines /partner up, or go home/ that was the message, and that is exactly what happened. That said, I am intrigued by some of these designs. One of the things I am looking at while I watch: does the contestant have a team attitude, meaning, do they work well with the designers, do they listen to critique, and willing to make the necessary changes, the winner will come from the 2-3 contestants that have that attitude. I have an idea who I think will be in the final 3 just by listening to them interact with the judges and their demeanor while speaking with the “experts”. knightsofnii
I actually submitted a design for this 2nd season. I have no idea what the criteria were for choosing the 16, but I'm sure my video lacked flair or something. Maybe I'm biased towards myself, but I think the design I had was sound, and I'm praying it doesn't somehow get "influenced" into these finalists. (i'm sure they can do whatever they want with my submission). That's all I'll say for now, as I'm already working on next year's plan, if there's a chance they have a season 3. I think the Roswell has the greatest chance to make it, provided the crown can be strong enough to push enough weight below. The Inifinty channel is gimmicky but that's what will pull people in if it can be made to be effective. The bone tissue top design thing is going to be interesting. I'm waiting for the returning guy to get cut. I'm stoked for his drive, but he seems to be a bit too sure of himself and his design. Berg Ryman
So last night was the first prototype testing with some really interesting 3D printed titanium heads. I was really impressed with some of the numbers these clubs were getting in just general prototype mode. A few of the heads had failures, but I think that had more to do with the quick production turnaround and those designs having different crown materials (the Launchpad, Black Hornet, and Dial Shot all failed I believe) Also, the Dial Shot had really bad smash factor and ball speed numbers. I think it'll be a challenge for him to make up that difference. In the end Black Hornet went home I think now you're seeing the top 3 materialize with Roswell, Magnus, and Cortex being heads and shoulders above everything else as far as I can tell. I'm hoping for the Roswell with a name tweak, because the weight track is super interesting to me. Magnus seems the safe choice which is something I think WIlson will try to avoid, and Cortex sits in the middle and outside of interior structure, there isn't a compelling story.
