Rating your swing look versus course effectiveness

Big money

Recommended Posts

My pro raves about my swing.Every golden position he teaches I just nail the results. Which are lag)shallow shaft transition)steady head)shaft lean at impact)open hip transition)and his biggie is being loaded in backswing. And driver swing speed is 116.Look wise and launch monitor numbers I would give it an easy A to low of A-

now for how effective it is.Well the results have been varied.I can still miss it multiple directions on any strike.Which baffles me as on camera and launch monitor it is very solid.Im always 1.4 ish iron smash factor. So for effectiveness I would give it a C

how goes it for the rest.Anyone have a bad looking swing and goofy launch monitor numbers and still play great golf?

Keep it in the short stuff

Looks- C-

Effectiveness- A-

My swing is really flat, really long in the backswing, and really wristy. A launch monitor says I have a 2 way miss and OK distance control.

On course, I strike the ball really well, I can work it both ways and my distance control is really consistent. My chief complaint is I am a little inaccurate with the driver.

My swing looks like a mess but the results are really good, so I don't care how it looks.

I have a difficult time rating my swing.  There is a difference between my driver swing and every other full swing.  Right now I am struggling with my driver swing; it used to be one of the better parts of my game, except for distance, that is.  My fairway shots are better than they used to be.

So, I asked my wife what she would rate my swing.

     Looks:   C-      Effectiveness:    B+

In my mind I could be a lot better than I am, but I'm not sure the body will let me.

Everybody that I play with always say that I have a good looking athletic swing.  I have only seen myself on video twice and both times it looked to me that I could use some more hip turn in the backswing and follow through.  I have no problem hitting a draw or fade with a driver or iron.  My problem is the 2-way miss.  I have yet to eliminate 1 side of the course or rid myself of the push slice or pull hook when trying the draw or fade.  Someday I will take some lessons to help remedy the 2-way miss but for now I will just try to embrace the mystery of it! 😁

I would go

Looks: B to B+

Effectiveness: C to C-

I didn't learn golf by swing positions but rather by trying to emulate the swings of players I liked. Freddie Couples was one I really liked and I never was on a launch monitor etc. My backswing is quite long and people have commented on it for years but every time I try to shorten it - all hell breaks loose! My swing is long and flowing - but I know it and I trust it. I have had my game as low as a +3 so I would grade:

I'm pretty much self taught although have had a few lessons. People use to say I had the quickest swing that could fit in a phone box. i.e short and fast. But I've changed over the years so at least I get to about 3/4 swing with very little wrist cock.

Not sure what the measuring stake is for an A, but I would rate my swing and effectiveness as a B. If I factor short game they probably drop to a low B

I think that in general my swing looks OK, I've done a bit of video work with a good instructor.  And I suppose its moderately effective, playing to a 3.4 index at age 62.  B, and B

For the OP, with a good-looking swing, good clubhead speed, etc, what kind of scores do you shoot?

I’m mid 80 to low 90.With a career round of 78 this season. And we work on the entire game using cameras and constant repetitions on and off the course.Something about taking it on the course is tough for me.My pro said I just need more playing time. So basically I have a scratch players swing and distance. But a high handicap game

My swing is just about all self taught and I'm told fairly often I have a smooth flowing swing. Only had my swing recorded once and when I watched I thought it was mediocre at best. Pretty flat and (imo) a very early release. As for launch monitors I only really use them when I'm trying new equipment.

Looks: C+

Effectiveness: B (regular play could probably drop to single digit HDCP from 15-17)

I don’t have many huge misses minus a snap hook that shows up a round or two a month but I don’t hit the ball as far as some of my age group so wedges get a lot of reps.

I've never had a formal lesson, beyond Dad handing me a 7 iron at 7 years old and telling me to hit it, later saying, "keep your head down and your left arm straight."  Other than that, it's all made up.  I've seen video of my swing and I just want to puke at how it looks.  I'm also afraid of entertaining lessons would totally screw up my game, and all of my muscle memory would be destroyed as well as my golf game.  Yet somehow, in spite of the ugliness of it all, I manage to return to club to where it started on plane when I make contact 95% of the time.  My swing makes Jim Furyk's swing look like a work of art.

Now if I could only putt.

You have that ghost swing thing working really well.  As in, all I get is a white background and then I hear the slow pop of the club meeting the golf ball.

One of the great things about this game is that there are no pictures. The score is the score no matter how you get the ball in the hole. I have been told that my swing "looks" incredible, by anyone from a PGA pro to a 25 handicap they all say that it is wonderful to watch. I of course don't feel this way, it is my swing and it is somewhat effective but I see the flaws when I watch it on video. Below is the best it has probably ever been. This was taken on Friday.

I would grade myself as follows:

Looks:   Incomplete

Effectiveness: C-

Regarding my swing, I gave it an incomplete because I am still working on a grade with my instructor.   When we view the video of my swing, the instructor makes no comment on its aesthetics, so I suspect it is still a bit ugly in a classical sense.  He only points to those immediate areas on which I should work.

I gave myself a C- on effectiveness, because I have been told that my handicap is on the high end of the average golfer.

When it comes to my swing in a sand bunker, I get an F on all accounts.

I’ve played my worst with an swing that my teaching pro said looked like a strong A.But would play my best when I used a swing that looked like a F-.When I did exact opposite of what is correct ex flipping and over the top, the ball and score was pretty good

My A game swing defies all physics but works.Ugly but effective should be our motto

Keep it in the short stuff
