PGA TV

Just saw a news article that PGA has teamed up with Discovery channel to offer a streaming service for PGA events. Unfortunately it will be for markets outside the US. They plan on carrying 150 different events annually.

Wonder if contractual obligations with Golf Channel and the major networks prevented US streaming.

Ding, ding, ding.

As always, follow the money.  When the PGA Tour is done with the Golf Channel contract, I would imagine their next offering will involve the PPV streaming model.  In fact, if I were putting money on anything, the further we head into the future, the more you are going to see of major sports leagues heading towards the PPV and streaming options.  Well, let me also say that a lot of the content provided to us is already PPV, as we pay for cable (most of us anyway).  And with more people abandoning cable, and the oncoming rush to provide streaming content for individual leagues, etc, digital streaming is where TV is headed.

I'll even take this further in suggesting that the Golf Channel, as a content provider is probably already dead.  Within 5-10 years, most of your existing cable TV channels will have to reinvent themselves in some way to remain profitable.  Cable TV as we know it will eventually cease to exist as more and more people stream only the content that they want, ala Netflix and Amazon Prime.  The entire spectrum of sports and entertainment is changing every day now with new offerings, and old staples slowly and surely becoming irrelevant.

Although I still peek in to see how the guys are doing, I haven't been posting the past couple of days because I've been asked to back off.

This is a topic on which I couldn't pass, however.

Modern tech continues to make my life miserable

I don't have to mention golf equipment at this point.

I despise smart phones and touch screens in general.

I despise modern cars because the head restraints don't let me wear a hat. (A proper man's dress fedora, not a boy's cap.)

And now TV.

I have Netflix streaming, and while its programming is good,

its convenience doesn't hold a candle to premium cable with on demand and DVR,

except that entire seasons of shows drop at once which is good.

Predictably, I hate streaming.  And that's clearly how TV is going.

And at my age and health, TV is pretty much all I've got.

And reading.  I'm rediscovering books which I can read in bed.

I definitely should spend more time in bed....with alcohol.

Lots of it.

Plus, I lost 1.6 billion dollars on Mega Millions last night, so my mood isn't fabulous to begin with.

(Either Big Stu or some other South Carolinian bought the winning ticket. Congrats.)

The intense pressure of the mid-terms has me doubling my meds, and it still doesn't seem like enough.

If the Red Sox hadn't won the Series opener, I'd be even worse, and that's hard to imagine.

Excluding the mod who reasonably warned me about an inappropriate political  comment,

PMookie was the first.  I sent him him a nasty PM as is my style, but I honored his request to stop posting on one thread.

Tony (CIC) suggested that those of us who've had to give up the game should stop posting,

although he was very civil about it and I did see his point.

jlukes never asked me to stop posting,  but he's been fairly regular, not always without cause,  with critiques of my posts.

I continue to observe how the gang is doing because it's really a good group.

I need to be less active with my posting, however.

My "likes" number has fallen below my post totals, which is a good sign that one's relevance is declining.

Well someone has to start thought provoking threads.

I'll just leave it at that.

I mistakenly credited Tony@CIC for a post that Edveed made about those of us who don't play anymore not posting here on the forum.
I didn't have any objection to Ed's post at all, but he made the suggestion, not Tony.

Nifty that was nice of you for correcting the error. This forum should be for all that love the game regardless of how much or little we play or what our handicap is.
