For Linksters Who Mostly Play at Their Club

When I played golf, I preferred not to struggle with my bag back and forth from the course.

By leaving it in the bag room, the clubs got cleaned, and they went straight from the bag room to the cart when it was time to play.

That went on my bill, of course,

but it wasn't expensive and I  didn't have to deal with the sticks.

The downside was that this gave me no incentive to warm up or practice.

Nobody brings your clubs to the practice tee.

You have to go pick them up and do that yourself.

Carts weren't allowed in the practice area because there wasn't room.

So I'd rather have an extra cup of coffee and glance at The Boston Globe sports pages rather than warm up.

Well, this described me to a tee, but it was hardly universal among my buds.

Despite the fact that few of them ever warmed up or practiced,

most of them liked to keep bags with them rather than leave them at the club.

I don't think that it had anything to do with saving a few bucks.

They just preferred it.

I can understand that. Sometimes we'd go to the Whirlaway, our favorite driving range/diner away from the club,

and I'd hit balls with clubs that I had in the house rather than my gamers which were at the club.

If I knew that I was going be playing somewhere else, which wasn't very often, then I'd bring my bag home with me.

How many of you guys leave your clubs in the bag room?  Based on the excess energy most of you seem to have,

I'm guessing it won't be many.

I'm not in a position to store clubs at my club, but as mobile as I remain, I like to keep my clubs in the car, should a "golf emergency" arise at any time or day.  😉

Cause you never know when someone will hit you up for that quick 9 after work, and it could be any number of courses.

I have my own cart in a locked cart shed. My clubs stay on my cart all the time. So much easier to just pull up, open my shed, grab my cart, and head out.

Nooooo never store them at my club 1) trust issues 2) i play other courses to much plus I know myself and I’d forget them at the club

We don't have a bag room at my club to keep them at.  And I live on the course and have golf carts so my bag is always on one of those.

We have a bag room at our club but i never leave it there. Not a trust issue, but i just like to leave them on my cart - which stays in my garage. I'm a bit ocd about my equipment so the bag gets washed occasionally, the clubs after every round and the grips probably monthly.

I guessed it.

Just me.

But it does make sense.

I was older and didn't like hauling my bag in and out of the car.

(It was fifteen (15) clubs heavy, after all!)

And I rarely played anywhere but my club once I retired.

Plus, it may just be an old fashioned practice.

As mentioned, many venues don't have bag rooms anymore anyway.

Among my own peeps, only a few of us used the bag room.

Very common at private clubs around here. Even some public course have room. I keep mine always with me just in case I get a chance to sneak away.

A few clubs and one public course around here have bag rooms. I wouldn't leave my clubs in any of them. I always like having my clubs at a moments notice. I also don't trust some of the courses to not steal my clubs. I know that I could take any bag out of any of the bag rooms and steal them. Of course, I wouldn't do that but there are unscrupulous people everywhere.

No. I don't like anyone touching my clubs.  Plus, being PE2's, it's very likely one of those bag attendants would take them for a spin. 🤣

Our bag room was pretty safe, I think, but for me, it was simply a matter of convenience.

I've always put a pretty high priority on convenience,

and it only got worse as I got older, fatter, stiffer, and lazier.

I always had older sets to play in a pinch, but they were always at home--I didn't even keep one of them in the car.

The local race tracks--both ponies and puppies alike--all closed down.

If it were daytime and I wasn't at home or at the club,

I'd either be out running errands or having lunch somewhere with my wife.

Or maybe I'd be driving into the city to feed my daughter's cats and clean their litter boxes while she was away.

How would a possible game suddenly come up?

I guess that maybe, in fact probably, it's just a matter of how one lives.

Impromptu game possibilities never, ever came up for me.

The most convenient place for my bag was at the club.

I’ve done both but ultimately decided that I preferred having my clubs with. There’s a course near work that I like to go to at lunch and chip and putt at. I can’t do that if I don’t have my clubs.

At my club they put your bag on the range for you.

While not at the same time I was fit for every club in my bag as well as the Pro VI ball. I use the chrome soft x ls on my league course.  It has much softer softer greens than the club that I belong to.

I’m on a mission to shoot my age - lifetime lowest round is 66 and I’m currently 67.

That's great. They didn't do that at mine. Plus the fellow geezers with whom I played never practiced.

If they did, they'd have nothing left to take to the course.

And I, of course, was one of them.

Also, "near work" is a phrase that I haven't used since I retired at fifty-five, seventeen years ago!

I had nobody to introduce me to the Calvinist work ethic.

Maybe if you hadn't moved away from New England. Rev....

I think the only way I would store my clubs would be if I was (semi)retired and was a member at a private course with excellent practice facilities that wasn't too far out of the way to grab my bag should an impromptu round come up. I really enjoy my current course but have to change it up every once in a while!
