New Wilson Staff Tour Ball

Recommended Posts

The Wilson Staff Rep dropped off a sleeve of new tour balls. It’s called “Professional”.

We played them today and were very impressed.

Even I could suck them back on the green.....LOL

Very Impressed.

I'd certainly like to try them.

A few years ago I played -  the FG Tour. It was really a top notch ball. Hmmm... in fact I might still have some.

Thanks for reminding me Foz.

Think that this is a replacement for the duo spin? Or is this the new FG Tour?

You have equipment rep's dropping off freebie's to your house?  Well played!  I like the name "professional" and that it can also serve as an alignment stripe.  They list them as the Duo and with a 60 compression.

If I'm not mistaken these are the new replacements for the "old" Duo Urethane ball.

This ball replaces the Duo U, according to Wilson Staff.

A touch more compression 60... could be my go to.

I really liked the 2015 FG Tour Ball 70 compression.

The 2017 model was not on my nice list, just didn’t feel as good as the 2015 model, and the flight was different.

Hmm, interesting sounds like a good offering from Wilson. 60 compression is usually a little soft for me, but I will certainly give them a shot.

W/S balls have been a solid value for quite some time. I expect these to be great as well.

Finally got out on the course with the Professional yesterday and learned two things. #1 - it's not a good idea to test new balls in New Hampshire in November, as leaves tend to hide some shots, and glare makes  you walk past the ones the leave don't hide.

#2 - this is a pretty darned good ball. As others have said, it's the replacement/update for the DUO Urethane - a little bit firmer at 60 compression, with more spin than the previous model.  It still feels soft (not sure I could tell the difference between 55 and 60), and it has some nice spin on the green. Wilson says around 10% more green spin than the DUO U. Is that significant? Not sure, but I like the way it played.

They dropped the price from the DUO U level of $39.99 down to $34.99 - to compete more directly with the TaylorMade Project (a) and a few others. Not quite a tour level ball, but then again most of us don't need a Tour level ball. Yeah, the Snell's are still a bit less expensive, but these come in COLORS!

As for the FG Tour balls, you can expect some news on that front coming over the winter, probably early January.

A few years back I bought a few dozen of their Tour ball and it was noticeably shorter off the driver than other balls I play, so it didn’t last long in my bag. Any comments on distance vs others you’ve gamed? The feel was great, spin around the greens too, but I’m not going to give-up yards off the tee.

Kinda hard to say, since it was in the mid-50's yesterday and I hadn't swing a club in a couple of weeks. I'd say in the big picture it wasn't a whole lot different in terms of distance. The relatively soft core should be good for those who need lower spin off the driver.

Interestingly, the mantle layer is the same surlyn material Titleist uses in the ProV1 - and, I'm sure, others - the hard mantle and thin cover help create spin on full and partial approach shots.

Anyone else get some grass stains on these yet?

Flying to Florida as we speak with about a half dozen of these buggers in the bag, along with the Srixon prototypes.  Will file a report once we're done - if I can remember which end of the stick to hold...

Looking forward to it. I've always been a fan of Wilson balls.

So the Florida Golf Weekend is over - 54 holes with Foz was a blast and a half! We played two rounds yesterday at Saddlebrook, and one round this morning  at Pebble Creek - Foz's home course.

First - the Duo Professionals: I like this ball - the low compression is what makes it stand out. Plenty of spin around the green and it's, well, soft. Colorwise I'm not a fan of the orange - but the matte yellow looks really nice, and the white is, well, white.  At  $34.99/dozen, it's not overpriced - but it is more than the $29.99 Q Star Tour from Srixon.  I'd say both balls are very comparable - Wilson differentiates itself in both feel and available colors.

The new Srixon Prototypes - new versions of the Z Star and the Z Star XV - were both excellent. They're noticeably harder than the Duo Professionals, but the new Z Star is noticeably softer than the previous version, as I had one in the bag to compare. I can't say if the XV is softer, as I didn't have one handy to compare, but I'd imagine that softness would be one of the improvements made. For their part, Srixon isn't telling yet.

We had a little wind yesterday - and as always, Srixon balls perform admirable in the wind - nice and stable.

I'd recommend either ball if you like Tour level performance. I'd say the Z Stars have a little bit of an edge, but I'd be fine playing either ball for the season.
