878 Rounds of Golf in One Year!

Mr. 82

Recommended Posts

https://www.golfdigest.com/story/what-its-like-to-play-18-holes-with-the-most-avid-golfer-the-world-has-ever-seen

Tidbits from the article:

  • 90 holes in one day is the most they mentioned.
  • 11 pairs of shoes gone through
  • 4 golf bags
  • 10 golf courses
  • He said he got it down to about $5 per round, which if you are doing the math is about $4,390  I don't know about you, but I could probably do it a lot cheaper just living in Florida in the winter and somewhere up north for the summer.  Get a membership at one course in both places and go crazy.

He winters in Austin, Texas, and summers in Connecticut.

Which begs the question - who on here comes even close to this guy?  Some of you retired nuts who play every day need to pipe in.  Heck, I don't even know anyone who plays 200 rounds a year, let alone anything even close to this guy.

For you anal retentive types, I got the 878 number from his website.  http://breakthegolfrecord.com/

I'd have to agree with you, 2 memberships would be a lot less than $4,300 and 90 holes in one day, that's 5 rounds, assuming you got around in 3 hours, that's 15 hours playing, without breaks !!!! I find it a bit hard to believe myself.

I wouldn't enjoy that much golf.  Too much of anything starts moving into the monotonous and boring category.

I probably could do this (with unlimited resources), though I wouldn't want to. It would just be too much golf for me. I wouldn't enjoy it, and it might ruin the game for me.

I have a friend who plays a tons of golf. He’s the member at a club in VT that costs 6 K a year and a 5 month member at a club here that costs him 3 k.

He is obsessive about golf (or anything that he does.). He was once won the Ms Pac-Man world tournament, was a top weight lifter in his weight class - if he does it - he’s all in. No one would be surprised that he was a hired gun litigator in NYC. A firm would hire him for a case. He now has a private practice (I talked him into that) practicing at a reduced rate to support his lifestyle - home in VT, Condo here.

My point is that obsessive as my buddy is he “only” managed 327 rounds last year and is on pace for a few less this season.

BTW he came to Florida on Oct 4 and has played at least 1 round every day, 36 holes several times.

For me 201 rounds in 30 months at an average of $65 a round. That comes to approximately $13,000 in green fees alone.

That’s pretty insane when I read it back to myself.

If I were to be retired with a full membership I would probably (try to) walk 400 rounds. The length of our season can vary by a few months though depending how mother nature feels.

I will say he is nuts for carrying his bag that much. After 18 I'm ready to go home

Two and a half rounds every day 365 days a year ?  I'm assuming he's not married!  I can't even get out twice a month between the wife and kids, LOL....  Cool he's doing it though.

Well if your wife changes the locks you’ll have no trouble playing that much when you have nowhere to sleep.

OK, read the article. And, oh yeah, the guy is nuts BUT .....

I found the section that quoted his wife quite interesting - where she says a big part of the guy's motivation is losing a close friend of his .. who was only 57 and not yet retired and so had not yet had the chance to travel and play a lot of golf and enjoy life......

She’s definitely his number 1 fan. All the spouse jokes are still too easy.

It’s nice to see people find a cause and tackle it full on. It’s definitely better to whole ass one thing rather than half ass a dozen.

To Rye...

To play Winged Foot...

Yes, true story. I had a free round that my brother in law offered me. They ended up playing Bethpage Black and then the West by making it a two-day event. Hated to turn it down but I couldn’t leave her at home with our 10 month old.

LOL, I guess I don't advertise it much around here, but I pretty much play on any day that ends in "y".  I get 9 holes in after work on days when I have to be somewhere, and 18 holes on weekends.  Lately I've been taking Mondays off to play in tournaments, just because I can.  Sure, there are a few days when I don't make it to the course, but it's rare anymore.  Granted, it's somewhat seasonal, as when it was 95 degrees at 4:30 pm this summer there were days when I took a pass on walking 9 holes.  But now that we are maxing in the high 70's I won't miss a day of golf if at all possible.

As for getting the wife's permission, lol.  She's the one simply asking me if I am playing, rather than offering permission.  I guess it's because golf is all I do and she knows that that she will never say no.  Heck, I told her about an upcoming two-day tournament in Orlando and her reply was, "that sounds like fun."

Fact.

Her sister actually explained later what I passed on. She knows what it was and let’s be honest, I was more bummed about missing playing the black. That I can replicate.
