Pass for me. I understand the purpose of it and in curling it has become more popular due to aging ppl falling and the stigma of wearing a helmet, but that is on ice. For golf I think it would be a real hit on the popularity of the sport.

Wow.  I never thought golf was a rough enough sport to require protection before.  My question is why are clubs/people doling out thousands of pounds to people hit by golf balls?  Is nobody responsible for themselves these days?  When you step on a golf course you should expect to keep your head on a swivel and ears open because you never know where a ball may come from.  No different than spilling a hot cup of coffee on yourself.  Just sad!

sounds like an organisation using this as a way to get more exposure for themselves.

Worst case scenario if it snowballed would be golfers signing a disclaimer before your round- or agreeing it by starting the round- to not wear a helmet but waive any claims if hit by a golf ball.

 

Where would it end? I wear a helmet then you get drilled with a stinger in the gentlemens area so you claim anyway

Good idea. In fact, I think everyone needs full body armour before stepping out of the house. That's it.

I'm 63 and remember when you could just hop on your bike or skateboard and off you went. No helmet. Not anymore... you have to wear a helmet or you'll die.  Personally, I never saw anyone suffer a head injury while riding their Stingray; although I'm sure there are cases somewhere out there. What I did see were lots of skint knees and elbows. Including mine. It seems people are required nowadays to also wear spandex. A uniform if you will. So count me in on wearing a helmet while playing golf. But not until everyone else is wearing one first. But by then I'll be dead from tripping over my walker and smacking my head on the floor. Wait... a helmet!!!

Nope, mandatory helmet won’t happen. You might see a few places or individuals adopt it but the backlash won’t let it be permanent. Not that there aren’t safety concerns but show me something that is 100% safe...

At my muni there are 4 holes where I might consider wearing a helmet.  Holes 5,6, and 7 run parallel to each other with only 8-12 foot mounds separating them.  A big hook or slice and you are in another fairway.  And then there is #10  which is parallel and to the right of the driving range, again only separated by mounds.

Last year I was nearly hit by balls 26 times; this year it's only been 14 times.  I count any ball that lands within 10 yards of me.  This is my biggest gripe about the course I play, but it's the best course for the money that I would play locally.

I had a comment about helmets and licking bus windows, but I'll refrain. 

I have had 2 occasions where a I could the need for a helmet. 1 playing in league ON the tee box and errant ball from the next group behind us bounced right in front of me and had I not had "Matrix" skills i might have taken one in the biscuit, Mark ( in our league Did yell Fore that's when I saw it coming.) .. And the other My Father In Law was actually hit while we were getting into our cart after we came back to it from the green, Noone yelled Fore or nothing caught him in the right bicep... from the tee box on the fly.. He got lucky.. He's 81...

In this ever-changing world we live in, one must learn to adapt. With that said, I am sure this was born out of a special interest group whose agenda can best be pushed by creating arguments. Just think about it this way, I push everyone I know for a million dollars I so desperately need, when in reality I know I'll be able to get a few thousand when done.

Ooo dear. Pretty soon the big golf companies will be selling helmets and mygolfspy will have to do a test on them. That’s the day I stop golfing

there is something strange about this possibility. Why are they considering golfers wear helmets when it is the spectators getting beaned ?
I don't recollect golfers being hit or am I mistaken?

According to the article, 16-40% of amateur golfers are injured while playing golf from bad shots. Some even miss work.

Injured from a golf ball? I can see that statistic from resulting from swing injuries - back, etc, but not a stray ball.
