He always wears them. I don’t know. I’d say if for 99.99999% of all golfers have to, Have to wear soft spikes then pros should also. But the argument is always they’re playing for a living and should be able to use xyz. Well it’s basically xyz is illegal for all of us to use well then should just put it into the rules. - no metal spikes allowed. But again I see the whole ‘they’re available to us and it’s not against the rules and we are playing for our living out here man, why you trying to take food out my mouth’ point of view. Just think it’s dumb. Allot of pros play soft spikes

I was not aware that many pros still wear spikes - so the appropriate governing bodies have already allowed some bifurcation in the rules, why not do it with clubs/balls, too?

FWIW, I don't have a strong opinion on bifurcation, just pointing it out.

Metal/soft spikes are not in the rules of golf. It is a courses decision or is in essence a “local rule”. Range Finders are another example. While not a rule of golf, some levels of competition allow them and others don’t.

Not allowed at our Club. Can't imagine what they would do to our greens  - especially if you had a "shuffler" playing the greens.

Zach Johnson has pure metal, not even a little plastic/soft spike like these pictured. You can hear him on TV sometimes

Yeah, I can understand with his swing speed, he really needs those.  (read sarcasm).

Personally, I think metal spikes are better - for the greens. I only own softs spikes as at my course and most others that's the rule. I see more damage and ugly depressions/marks from people walking around (including me) with SS as opposed to what metal ever caused. People like to say that metal spikes damaged greens because people dragged their feet. Don't people drag and twist their feet while wearing soft spikes? Twisting marks on greens are the worst! IMO the main reason SS came into being is because you can wear them from green to dining room. No damage to the clubhouse floors. But to make a claim of little to no damage on the green is BS.

I remember the days of metal spikes as that's all we had. And, in all fairness metal spikes and the shoes were not as comfortable as today's. Yes, I miss the clicky-clack of metal spikes in a nostalgic way. If all metal spikes were allowed I'd probably wear them assuming the shoes were more comfortable than before.

Tiger Woods wears a hybrid type metal spike. They are a combo of soft spikes combined with strategically placed metal spikes. The majority of the PGA professionals grew up with and wear soft spikes.

I was never the same player after soft spikes / spikeless.

I probably missed steel spikes as much as or more than any player of my skill level.

I'd worn them since I was fourteen years old.

Then we have Rev who didn't like to wear them even when they were allowed.

So I guess it's up to the player.

I loved my burgundy Dexter wing-tip spikes! My favorite shoes all-time! I wore them through HS, college, all the way until I was forced to switch them at a CC! I have seen crap greens everywhere ever since, so I can’t say the spikes were any worse than what I see now. I loved the sound spikes made on concrete!!!

I wonder if we will see a resurgence of metal spikes now that spike marks can now be repaired under the new USGA rules.

I'd like to think so Kenny. Unfortunately, I doubt it since it does save the flooring in club houses. However, I do know of one private club where golf shoes of any kind/style (spikes or no spikes) are not allowed inside the club except the pro shop and locker room. They don't even allow sneakers worn in the house. It's a stuffy kind of place to be honest.

Metal spikes are good for the greens...up to a certain point and then it just wears down the grass. If a course only has 50 golfers/day, then metal spikes won't do much harm. However if it's a muni with lots of traffic, then you get the scuffs, twisting of the grass, high traffic marks, etc on the greens and that's when they become counter-intuitive. In fact, the newer soft spikes are now being considered a nuisance for superintendents because of how they long, wide and aggressive they are on putting surfaces. They grab and hold onto the turf and tear up the greens...just look around the cup and see the scaring by the new soft spikes

Lots of pros still wear metal spikes and I bet both Phil and Tiger wear metal spikes of some sort for The Match.

I personally would love to wear metal spikes but even I will unintentionally drag my foot on a green and look back in horror as I just shredded some finely mowed turf.

I started playing recently and only used spikeless so i wouldn't know the difference. But since this isn´t soccer and there´s no way we would hit one another with the spikes, i believe this was all the making of the club houses. People click clacking around making noise and all. As for damage to the greens, i wear spikeless and i still make marks.

I think it has less to do with the greens  ( as metal spikes actually act like mini aerators ) and more about all other damage, club house floors, carts, ect.. just my thoughts.

I used to think it was snobby when clubs didnt let you change shoes in the car park, then the GM told me it's actually the damage to the tarmac with thousands of spikes annually digging it up, makes sense.
