This is totally legit, right? G400 for a buck fifty?

Knee replacement on Monday so I’m sitting here without a lot to do. Ran across an ad for a G400 Max for only $150!

Well wahoo! I will need a new driver and at that price, who can lose!

Notice the site is Alibaba. 100% Chinese. Has to be a clone. But I’ll admit, it looks close. I can’t spot and glaring flaws.

Anyone want to jump in and test it out?

Yes, that site is pretty notorious for selling counterfeit golf equipment. Obviously, it's a bad idea on its own terms, but I suspect it's even less appealing to get a knockoff driver. MGS ran an test sometime back in which a knockoff Scotty Cameron outperformed the genuine article, but that isn't surprising when comparing relatively low tech putters. Drivers are another thing altogether, and I'd venture a guess that it isn't even worth $150 performance-wise.

Yeah 150 for G400 Max definitely not right. Maybe it's a Pang G400?

it's not about "so what if it is a fake?".

it's about buying it and supporting the underground market.

This is morally wrong and if you purchase it knowing that it is a fake, then unfortunately you are no better than the people making them.

Um...thanks, but I'll pass even clicking on that.  So much evil out there already infesting my computer.  Why give them further ammunition.  Besides, I like the G400 driver already in my bag.  Yeah, I guess I could use a back up.  😮😂

I totally agree.

Before I retired I worked with some guys that routinely made business trips to China.  One guy brought back a Cobra driver; not sure of the model, but it was sometime around 2013.  He hit it well, but distance was a little less than his normal drive.

It's not the same driver; it's stolen technology, and likely inferior.

But what if they are close enough in looks you lose track of which one is which?

Just thinking out loud, I would never buy one of these. I wonder what a test would show? If it’s really bad we’ll all be able to point this out when friends find these “to good to be true” deals.

If they turn out to be 80% as good as the originals, would we still approach them with an air of disdain?

Don’t shoot the messenger, just a mind game

There are a number websites and importers who will attempt to ship you their clubs. Most often they advertise these clubs not as knock offs or fakes but instead use nomenclature that is really close to the real-thing. Your G400 might be advertised as a G400 but more often than not the word or name “PING” will not be used. However when if it arrives to your home it will most definitely include the OEM name.

Are these clubs real, fake or clones? The answer is yes. Often times local nationals will steal directly from the forging company then sell an original as a clone or fake. Then their are clones which are legal and only resemble the OEM but do not use any of the OEM badging. Finally you have counterfeit clubs. These clubs are illegal to sell and equally illegal to knowingly purchase. When you buy these online you run the risk of the item not clearing customs.

Clones and counterfeit clubs use lower quality materials and components with much fewer (if any) quality control measures. While these clubs maybe darn close to the OEM you will not get the same consistency and life expectancy. A titanium driver or mixed carbon fiber driver as a clone or counterfeit is more than likely 100% low quality steel. The shaft and grip will follow suit.

I use to deal with this issue all the time when I was in the automotive OEM components business. Some of our customers in China would reverse engineer our products and even put our company name on the knock-offs selling them at a fraction of the cost. Obviously they were inferior to our products and in some cases downright dangerous.

The old adage applies "buyer beware."

I wish I could like this 100 times.  Spend your hard earned money on what you wish.  But remember the guys that put their passion and skill into making high quality equipment for us.  The old adage often turns out to be true, "when you buy cheap, you get cheap".
