26 members have voted

  1. 1. If you could be guaranteed one of these every round, which would you choose on a permanent basis...think about your answer..it might not be obvious

    • 25 yards more yards guaranteed on every drive during the round
      9
    • 3 less strokes guaranteed on every round
      17

The easy answer is use truegolffit to get the 25 extra yards off the tee and take the 3 strokes.

The average handicap for the 25 yards is about 12.

The average handicap for the 3 shots is about 7.

I think this shows that at a lower handicap, it is harder to shave off a few shots than at a high handicap. For a high handicap, hitting a shorter club into the green is paramount. Lower handicaps are usually better ball strikers so an 8 iron VS a PW isn't as big of a deal as it is to a higher handicap.

Drop 3 strokes without making any improvement in my swing, nor in my course management nor in my overall game??!!??

I'm in!!!

For me - and I may be an atypical golfer - I've found that as I've improved my swing technique that I've improved my distances with each club. However..... I've not (yet!!) seen a commensurate improvement in the number of strokes struck per round.

So I'll take the Magic 3 and continue to work to improve my overall golf game .. and so hopefully continue dropping a few additional strokes on my own going forward.

I’ll take the 25 yards for sure....would give me more approach shots with scoring clubs in my hands, I could potentially shave much more than 3 strokes with that new found advantage

OK, I get 1 I'll take the 3 strokes off per round. the extra 25 yds does not guarantee a center of the fairway drive it just means it'll go 25 yards longer. That might be dead center but it could also equal 10 yds further left/right or more.. 3 strokes is 3 strokes. I can improve and still take off 3 strokes. it says 3 strokes off guaranteed every round, not just one round or once off your hndcp. IF (and mind you that's a big IF) I were to improve to a scratch golfer (see Big IF) i would then equal a -3. Even as a mid hndcp player 3 strokes off could put me into legend status.. LOL..

Easily 3 strokes.

I can’t make five birdies a round despite carrying a driver 275 and hitting wedges into almost all par 4’s that I play.

Here's how one person at our course answered it. He said 25 yards times 14 holes equals 350 yards your shortening the course by.

So 350 yards is normally 4 strokes. So by taking the 25 yards he's saving 4 strokes not 3. So he took the strokes and ran.

Of course his logic isn't really the way those 350 yards play out. But it showed a different way of looking at it.

This is exactly how I was looking at it. I believe that I would get a bit over 3 strokes per round with 25 more yards. I’m very accurate off the tee so this may not hold for everyone - your strokes gained for 25 yards per hole may be less because inaccuracies will add penalty strokes.

It’s not the length per se it’s the strokes gained via the length that I’m after. I’m banking that I would get more than 3 by taking the 25.

Fun discussion

25yds more distance. Over multiple rounds and multiple holes that extra 25yds would put me in many positions that would allow me to take 3 or more shots off of my score.

I’d take the 25 yards, because the strokes will fall if I’m hitting shorter clubs into the greens.

I'll take the 25 yards and get 6 strokes a round!!  I'd be willing to bet I could also gain an additional 3 strokes just by playing shorter approaches. Any takers?

Would you like to play a match where someone gives you three strokes and also lets you play from the senior tee? I'd take it and run.

You got it bubba.

3 strokes is basically the same as dropping your index by 3. That would be monumental for me, as I’m pretty stuck where I’m at now.

I would take the 25 yards with my same accuracy. I don't have the length I once did and 25 yards would certainly translate to lower scores for me!

So I am late to the party on this one, but for me its a no brainer.  Take 3 strokes off.  That would take me from a +3 to a +6 and that would make me competitive in the US Mid Am's and US AM's.   This is a great question for the masses though as I believe most would be able to find 3 strokes in each round that they could save.  I was surprised to see the poll results though as I would have thought that most would want more distance.  Maybe the USGA could have a say. 😉
