As different companies use different nomenclature, I thought I'd ask: which label do you favor for this club? I have my own hunch which name is most popular; I wonder if the name will ever end up standardizing across manufacturers?

I prefer just giving the degrees rather than using a name or number. I’d like to see all club manufacturers get away from using numbered clubs and go solely to degrees. It would be so much easier to understand and compare clubs.

I use traditional lofted clubs. Often guys ask me what I’m hitting or what I hit. As an example I always say “a 34 degree iron” rather than a 7 iron. Some of the power clubs are up to 6 degrees stronger in some clubs. It can get real confusing at times.

I’ve always called it a Gap wedge, even when it has “AW” or “51” (my Hogan TK) on it.

Like GB13 said, it’s there to fill a gap.

Well true to my odd ball self I can not vote because I do not actually carry one. Of course I carry traditionally lofted clubs. Every now and then I do carry a 60 but mostly a PW @48* and a SW @ 56*.  In fact need to re do my signature WITB some to reflect some shuffling around.

Ok I updated it but could not get the fancy logos to come up but that is ok---- But yes I am only carrying 12 clubs. I like it that way less decisions to make. My vintage stuff is really subject to change on a whim. Good example when I was off work Tuesday I walked 9 and played one of my sets of 1962 Macs with a Phil Rogers Trusty Rusty Cobra 56. Had  a R-7 driver I found the other week and an old Steel Shafted Steelhead. Putted with a Bulls Eye

But you guys can not pay me any attention I am so old school so carry on😁

I call mine my A well because that's what is stamped on it. No other reason. I will however call other peoples a gap.

This is actually what got me thinking about it. I always called it a gap wedge, but my G700s use the PING naming, so it is stamped UW. I actually had to look up what that meant 🙂

Usually call mine a gap wedge, but I carry a 50 and a 52 so I have to be specific when someone is grabbing me a club. While we are on the topic, Cleveland calls theirs a D. I get U, A, G and even the E for Hogan’s, but what the hell does D mean?

I'm with SteddyGolf. Especially when it comes to wedges. I carry my 52, 56, and 60 degree. I even use my 60 out of the sand, even though traditionally it's not a sand wedge: it's a lob.

I agree but let's add covers in there as well. ! I have GP stamped on my C300, but the new covers I bought for my irons  have A between the PW and SW. Also they came with 2 LW covers. so my 56 and 60 have a LW cover.

PING stamps my 50 degree wedge with a U. I call it a gap wedge, mostly because gap is one syllable and utility is 4 syllables, so gap takes less effort to say.

I carry 4 wedges starting with the 48* PW that is a part of my set. Wishon 771csi. The next wedge is a 52* and then a 56* and 60*. Pretty standard fare I suppose. I don't consider any particular lofted wedge as a SW. But for purposes of answering the question Patrick asked.... I'd say my 56* (or a 58*) might be traditionally considered a SW. But, between my PW and 56* sits the 52*. That's all it is to me. A 52* wedge. Honestly, It's probably my least used wedge. In order of daily usage I tend to play my 56* the most followed by perhaps my PW, 60*, 52*. I was unable to make a selection in the poll.

All other irons (non-wedges) I refer to them by the number stamped on the sole. That's what people know. If I compliment you on your good shot and ask, "what'd you hit there Joe"; don't tell me a 34*. As a frame of reference that means nothing to me and I'd wager 99.9% of other folks. Hell, I don't even know the loft of my 6i without looking up the specs. All I know or care about is the distance I can produce with it regardless of the loft.

My Sun Mountain bag currently includes:   TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png 771CSI 5i - PW and TWGTLogo2.png.06c802075f4d211691d88895b3f34b75.png PFC Micro Tour-c 52°, 56°, 60 wedges

I've started to refer to it as an attack wedge.

A - Attack the pin
U - the pin is going to be "U"nder attack
G - "G"oing to attack the pin with this thing.

See? Works no matter what is stamped on it.

I call it a "gap wedge" for the worst of reasons.

It reminds me that the manufacturers screwed up the numbering system to a fare thee well.

I'm reminded of speaking foreign languages.

If you're good at it, you think in the language that you're speaking.

If you're a novice, you think in English and translate in your head.

I'm like the latter with modern golf clubs.

If it's a "player's cavity back" or near blade, a gap wedge translates to a pitching wedge.

If it's a full-blown GI iron, a gap wedge translates to a 9-iron.

Maybe an eight.

I've reached the point, however, where I could happily put together a modern set if I could play.

Thanks to the comments and suggestions of my friends here, I wouldn't t have to play with vintage sticks anymore.

I've got a bunch of playable new sets in my imagination.

I will typically say my 50 degree rather then gap or utility. I have the i210 which has the U and find it a little odd to call it a utility. Sounds more like a hybrid to me so I stick with 50!

I play with the vintage stuff because that is what I like to play. Back in our era we had only 2 wedges to choose from and most bounces or soles were the same unless you took a file to one. I learned to utilize what I had in all sorts of ground conditions. For a while I did carry 4 wedges but found out there were too many decisions for me to make. Went back to 2 and made things easier for me. Like I have said many times before it all has to do with what era one learned the game in and the equipment you had to work with in that era

... I have always played with 6* gaps between my wedges. Traditionally a 48*-54*-60* but when switching to Cobra Amp Forged quite a few years ago I bent my pw to 46* and to keep my gapping at 6* I dropped to a 52*-58* which actually worked out better for me. This thread about what you call a specific wedge is something I had really never considered because like several others have already stated, I use my 58* from the sand more than my 52* and neither would be considered a traditional "sand wedge". I have always referred to my wedges by loft. If someone asks what club I used on a particular shot I always respond with "my 52 or my 58".

Usually the only one that will ask me specifically is my buddy Bear and when I tell him he knows exactly what I am talking about as in "Turned up56" Or " knuckeled down 56*" he knows on that first one I had the face open or on the second one I had the face hooded some and delofted. I also have a terminology I use with the 48 PW " open flop PW" which he knows I had the face open on the 48 making it like a 52 or 54. I also hit what I call a "high flip float" with the 9 iron where I flip it open some and hit a high soft cut.
