Project X shaft legend

Recommended Posts

Looking to decipher the information on the Project X Shaft that came with my recent purchase of a GBB driver. I can't find anything on Project X website and they haven't responded to my emails. Obviously i can tell it's a mid spin 55 gram shaft but what do the other two categories refer to: 5.5 and T800.

The T800 is the shaft designation and was the stock shaft in the Epic drivers.  It is a lower end version of the T1100.  The 5.5 is the flex designation that I believe equates to between a reg and stiff flex.

5.5 is regular flex in project x. The t800 is a cheaper version of the t1100 (materials used) only made for callaway. Mid spin high launch profile.

I am not sure if it has changed but I was always under the impression that 5.0 was regular flex for woods.  I know that there flex designation changes from irons to woods so I could be mistaken.  I have always used this chart but it may be old.

Very true! I ended up with a Made for Callaway (XR16, I think) Project X LZ in a used Cobra head for my previous driver. Worked wonderfully for me.

All the pressure to have aftermarket shafts in your clubs is something I find silly. I wish stock shafts worked for my game, everyone is different and that's what makes it interesting.

I still say that Ping produces their own shaft specs and then sources their production. The old 707D Shaft in the Ping i20 Driver was so good. That was the last OEM Made for Shaft that was perfect for me.

At some point I want to get on a launch monitor to see exactly how my shafts "work" for me as well. At my skill level, it's really tough to know if I'm fighting the shaft or not. The Project X LZ just seemed to feel really good, slightly whippy, which I really like. I hate boardy feeling shafts.

I know, I know. I should just go get fitted. But I've been on a complete swing revamp the past six months with great improvement, and I'm about to start SuperSpeed training, so I'm hesitant. My eventual goal is to get a Skytrak setup so I can do this at my own leisure. There are only three Trackmans in my area, one at my preferred shop, but they charge $60/hour for fitting and don't really offer a "go in and tinker" option. The other two are with teaching pros that run >$100/hour.

I do wonder how much some of these +$300 shafts outperform something like the vintage Graffaloys or Aldilias. Most of those can be had for less than $60 with an adapter attached (less if you DIY the work).

I don't have a lot of play on the "Made For" Matrix Red Tie that's on my Cobra F6s at the moment. I did play nine last weekend, hitting driver on three or four holes, and I like the mid ball flight. I feel like it would benefit me a lot in the summer where I could get some roll out. But I'm also tempted to pull the trigger on some Graffaloy Blues just to see if I can't bring the ball flight and carry up a little bit.

I can see how tinkering can become an expensive hobby.

Ball flight, misses, feel in the swing are some ways to tell if you are fighting the shaft or not.  Numbers will tell you if you have an optimized setup or confirm what you might see on the course or feel when you swing
