Now That's a Blade!!

From John Walls Twitter page.   These will certainly get attention and lots of comments this week I'm sure.    Somewhere @Shankster is hyperventilating right now!

Interesting. Iirc Wilson hasn’t put out a blade since the 100 anniversary set a few years back. Even more interesting to see Woodland testing them. Wilson makes a great looking blade.

I like the old school look of this iron.  The entire club really takes you back.  Wouldn't it be something if he wins with this in the bag.

I'm sure that's in his plan 😉

interesting tidbit: Wilson irons have won more majors than any other brand.

Very nice. I know it's been said there isn't much tech anyone can really put in a blade and they kinda are what they are, but these look great and look as though they may been trying to replace some weight in different areas...maybe more forgiving!

Was woodland playing with these or buttering his toast with them? My goodness those look incredible. However the thought of catching one of those thin on a cold day just gave me nerve damage in my elbows.

You're right, I CAN and could do okay, but it probably wouldn't be the best choice with more modern technology available. I certainly would enjoy seeing how I'd play with persimmons and 80's blades, but that is an adventure for another day.

I was about to share this story, they look great and I'm glad wilson staff is getting in another players bag. Especially since he doesn't have to play them. Here is Gary answering a few questions about them.

I posted these comments on the main blog page but thought they would be good for conversation.

Not hating on Wilson at all but I just don’t get why people get excited about irons like this. Honestly I personally don’t think they look all that great and why anyone would want to step back 30+ years in technology is beyond me. I guess I should clarify some. I think they look good if they were hanging on my wall as an office ornament but I think they look terrible if I’m standing over them about to hit a shot.

Couldn’t MGS use the same argument against clubs like this that they use when they talk about boutique putters or “wall hangers” that are made to be attractive but have zero tech to help your golf game?

What benefit does even a pro golfer gain out of a set of irons like this? If they are looking to play irons with such little forgiveness then why aren’t they playing some persimmon woods to match and maybe an old blade putter too? They use huge drivers and high MOI putters to help their game and then make the game harder when they mishit iron shots? The current golf ball doesn’t spin enough to work it as much anymore and pros aren’t trying to hit massive hooks or cuts unless they are in trees.

Even worse is they’ll probably try and charge $1200+ if they bring them to market.

My bag is a revolving door!

Some people prefer the look of a smaller top line, the turf interaction of smaller sole. From a person like a pro benefits from the spin and launch this profile compared to something bigger. Also the ability to better control flight and shot shape.

To your comment about pros not hiring massive hooks or cuts that’s not true. It may be less these days but there are still guys that want to move the ball a lot like bubba. But also to my above comment pros may not be trying to move the ball left to right but they definitely move it up and down depending on pin location and “trouble” around the green.

The best thing about equipment these days is there are lots of options from different models/categories, different looks and different lengths that anyone can find something to fit their needs.

I just enjoy looking at them. They are truly classic, simplistic, and look a lot better than the big, ugly SGI clubs. Would I ever put them into play? Hell no! I mean, I don't need SGI clubs, but a little forgiveness is a definite help.

For the pros? They hit the ball consistently enough that the lack in forgiveness doesn't hinder them much. When you say workability, I need just as much control on whether or not to cut the ball 1 yard or 50 yards. Therefore, if they strike the ball well enough and need the workability then they should play blades.

Also, most pros subscribe to your theory and don't play blades. The most popular Titleist model on tour are the AP2's so most tour guys do want a little bit of help and think they get the workability they need out of the AP2.
