When the trailer first came out my wife wanted to go see it and I told her no way am I going to a modern day musical. In August we took a family vacation to your neck of the woods, Ireland and Scotland. With an 8 hour flight there wasn't much to do but sleep and watch movies. Towards the end of the flight I had run out of movies that had interested me and my wife said she had just watched The Greatest Showman and it was really good. I figured why not, I will give it a look. Glad I did as like you I thought it was a great story told beautifully. It wasn't easy to admit to my wife that I was wrong and she was right, especially when overseas on a vacation. I never heard then end of it! Kor.A.Door
Having a teenage daughter, I had to buy this one before I even saw it. The good thing is that I can say that I know the songs because we’ve watched it a lot, but it’s a good movie. Alright, sneaky musical theatre nerd here. Interestingly enough, the music for La La Land and The Greatest Showman were both done by Pasek and Paul, the song writing team. I think the difference here is that their musical style lends better to a bigger production musical that feels like a stage adaptation to the screen like Greatest Showman over something a bit more introspective like La La Land, which was decided an older school musical film. Also, in between the two they had this little show called Dear Evan Hansen, which is getting produced into a film, and I think that really allowed them to find their voice and it only helped in staging and producing the score for The Greatest Showman with the proper bombast. Also, shout out to Seven Brides For Seven Brothers, good pull by Big Tazz. chisag
... Hate to admit it, especially as an actor, but I detest musicals. From the show tunes to the egregious over acting they are just not my thing at all. That said, when I was in Orlando last year we hit a cold snap and it got down into 20's for a day so I went to the movies and saw 3 films in one day. There was a gap between the 2nd and 3rd film so I stopped in to see the beginning of The Greatest Showman figuring I would hate it but better than sitting in the lobby for 30 minutes. ... To my surprise I loved it and stayed for the entire film. I enjoyed it so much I bought the Blu Ray and watched it again at home. Almost all of the dancing is actual dancing, not a chimney sweep dancing while doing their work kinda thing. I also don't think the music is like traditional show tunes and of course it is just such a wonderful story, which is really what film making is all about. So even if you hate musicals, I would highly recommend watching this one because it is unlike any musical I have ever suffered thru. Driver: Qi10 10.5* ... chisag
... As a 35 year SAG member most theaters just have me show my SAG card, sign in and the tickets are comped.
