Ryan Palmer on equipment and contracts

Recommended Posts

Pretty interesting read from Jonathan Wall’s interview with Ryan Palmer.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we see more guys playing without contracts and playing gear like Srixon and Mizuno.

His argument against equipment sponsors is a good one. I'm just surprised it's taken so long for us to see more guys doing it and for anyone to actually shed light on it the way Ryan did in the interview. It's not that this is anything new - players eschewing equipment sponsors - but it is probably the first time we've seen so many guys near the top choosing to do so.

The thing about guys near the top are lots of them are Nike guys that were/are still getting paid their Nike equipment deals and can play whatever they want and only would lose some of their Nike money if they signed elsewhere.

I think they have shown what a bag would like if players went for prize money over equipment deals.  The game has changed as well with TM not doing pay to play deals for their woods and it’s worked in their favor with guys like Koepka winning majors with their woods because they performed the best for him.

I think this article and the changing environment with contacts will bring brands like Srixon to the spotlight. It might even get brands like New Level and the custom company Fuffber was using some tour presence without having to dish out money.
