Mr. 82
Me and a buddy are heading towards Grand Cypress tomorrow for a two-day Ryder Cup style alternate shot tournament, sponsored by the FSGA. We get to play the Grand Cypress New course, which apparently is a Jack Nicklaus design that pays homage to St. Andrews in Scotland. I've never played this course so it'll be interesting to see how it is. I do have faint memories of playing another course at Grand Cypress back in the 90's, but I honestly can't remember a thing about that course, beyond it being in impeccable shape. Practice round tomorrow and then a round each on Friday and Saturday. The interesting part about this is that I looked up the handicaps of some of the competitors, and just about everyone is scratch or better. Then there's me as a 6 and my buddy who is a 9. If we finish better than dead last it will be a successfull tournament. :) G400 Driver XR 4 Fairway 16.5° Fli-Hi Utility Iron - 21° G Series 5-9 irons SM7 46°, 50°, 54° & 58° Ghost Spider S putter Nexus Laser Rangefinder Garmin Approach S20 GPS
Wedgie
Sounds like a great time so have fun. And there is no shame in losing to scratch or better players. It is losing to the 13 handicap sandbaggers that sucks. My next scheduled round of golf is mid March in Florida so you’ve already beat me. Mr. 82
Practice round in the books. We played the tees we are going to play tomorrow and I think this is way too much golf course for my game. Many par 4s of 420 or more. Some are into the wind. Nothing like hitting your drive 220 and then having 220 left into the green. Another par 4 I had like 195 in, but the green has a moat running across the front of it. And the green on that hole is tiny. I mean, might as well lay up to that insanity. Oh, and because I hit it right the shot was blind behind a large mound of fescue. Good times! This is the first green. Same as St Andrews in Scotland. Oh, and I wanted to send a special thank you to the jackass that decided he was too f’ing lazy to rake the bunker for those behind him. I just love getting screwed because of some neanderthal that has no clue about basic course maintenance. A few other shots. Golfspy_CG2
Is that hole supposed to be a replica of No. 1 at St Andrews? Just asking because of the Barry Burn type moat. Mr. 82
Is that hole supposed to be a replica of No. 1 at St Andrews? Just asking because of the Barry Burn type moat. But yeah, let's hope the Golf Karma gods get whoever left that bunker like that. The whole course is a replica of St Andrews. The fairways will jedi mind trick you to death with pot bunkers everywhere. After today’s round I’ve hit the same fairway bunker on the par 5 15th hole that splits the fairway right at 260 yards. There are ao many holes like that where if I hit my drive at it it will find the bunker right in the middle of the fairway. But to be fair, the fairways are ridiculously wide. You can have 100 yards from left to right and a lot of holes that parallel another hole that is all fairway. There really is any rough, but tons of pot bunkers and fescue to mentally screw with you. Oh and did I mention that the greens are monstrously large, but have some of the most ridiculous undulations I’ve ever seen. We had four 3 putts today and a four putt. They are running about 10 on the stimp for the tournament and the pins are all tuckes in places that are just really hard to get close to. This is by far the longest 6,700 yard course I have ever played. I swear it seemed like half the par 4s were 200 yards in or more on the approach, and three of the par 3s were 190+. The course feels much longer. Probably because holes 1, 10, and 18 are all very short and easy par 4s. The rest of the course is pure hell mentally. Long and nonstop frustration. Factor in the wind on this links style course that makes club selection a guess and it’s a brutally tough test of golf. We shot 92-85. 31st place out of 34 teams. At least we didn't finish dead last. I just don't have the distance of these young guns. When you are getting out driven by 30-50 yards on every hole those 420+ yard par 4s become borderline par 5s. And three of the par 3s were 190+. Not making excuses honestly, but the takeaway is that unless the yardage is less than 6,500 yards I shouldn't even bother playing in it. revkev
Copy that Gwag - I was very happy when I turned 55 and got to move up - 6,500 is the official FGA yardage for that age group.
