2019 Golf objectives

tony@CIC

Recommended Posts

I know it's not even Christmas yet but I've started working on golf objectives for 2019. Last year I made great strides in a number of areas which led to my breaking 90 so now it's time to ratchet it up.

Overarching goal is to consistently play in the mid 80's so I need to get moving on a number of components:

Strength training along with a focus on Flexibility

SS improvement by 5 mph across the entire bag

Master the Fairway Wood. That also means a session with a fitter, + lesson and of course buy a new one since I sold mine (out of frustration)

Continue the daily backyard chipping practice

Continue making gains with my putting

What are yours......

Congrats on breaking 90!

As far as goals for me this coming year, I am not sure where to start yet.  For the last 5 years or so my main goal was to break 80.  Well it finally happened this year and now I am left a little unsure what goals to set.  I like to make them hard enough to have to work at but achievable so breaking 70 is out of the question.  As I am typing this I think on goal will have to be to shoot par for 9 holes, whether that is the front or back 9 doesn't matter.  Gonna have to do some thinking on this one.

My first goal I'm already working on, getting my short game a lot stronger. When the weather here in Michigan breaks in spring work on 100 yards and in so I can hit the greens in regulation. That will lead (hopefully) to me breaking 80 and scoring consistently in the 70's. My pipe dream goal is to shoot 60 in 2020 as I will be turning 60 that year. I work daily on flexibility and doing as much research as I can concerning balls, clubs, grips and the mental side of the game.

I broke the par barrier last year, so my main goal is to break 70 this year.

Other than that I'd like to;

Get my swing speed over 110

Work on having a more consistent swing

Hit more than my paltry 4 fairways from last year

Work on my putting from 4-7 feet

Play in and build up some a solid tournament resume for college golf

Play in November and December of 2019.

Get fitted for the ugly stick.

Take at least a handful of lessons.

Keep my shoulder healthy (this will require a less aggressive swing)

Have fun, and get my kids out more.

Depending on where I’m at play a historical course.

Play a round with a MGS member or 20.

Have fun with the hickory sticks.

This year I got down to 1.5 hc for a stretch, and averaged 1.6 putts per green (29 per round). I want to get to scratch.

How to get there? Superspeed training (just bought a set; they’re in the mail). Other than that, practice putting, pitching, working the ball, solid fade on tap... might take a putting or green reading lesson.

I'm not driven but... I'd like to break par this next year. I've come so close a number of times and again this past season. I'll try and just play well and consistent throughout the 2019 season and see where the chips fall. At this point it's all a head game when the opportunities arise.

I broke 80 this past season, and I'd definitely like to make that a more regular occurrence.

Chiefly, I'd like to trend down toward a single-digit handicap. That's going to require two things. The first is a better game off the tee: GameGolf tells me I'm barely clearing 200 yards on my average tee shot. So I'm currently doing the SuperSpeed protocols with sticks I built for about $30. I've seen some pretty remarkable speed gains thus far; we'll need to see how they transition to the course once I can hit balls again.

The second improvement is going to have to be in my short game. I think I need to get in on the daily 100 chips idea, or at least something like it. I'm also hoping that a couple of side projects will help me bankroll a SkyTrak. If that happens, I want to use it (among other things) to dial in wedge feels for distances.

My parents just bought a house up here in the UP, so I'll get to play with my dad much more often this summer. I think we're planning to play as league partners. And Kirke will be old enough this year for his first attempt at Drive, Chip, and Putt. So this is going to be a great summer for family golf.

My number one goal is to get back to playing as regularly as I had prior to 2018.  Several things have caused me to back away some but those seem to be resolved.  Especially the broken foot I suffered in September falling down the basement steps after tripping over our 13 year old blind Beagle.

If I can reach my first goal, my second goal will take care of itself.  Which would be to lose a few pounds.  Walking a minimum of 9-holes every afternoon seems to keep the body feeling good.  I've noticed that more than anything over the past year or so not playing as much golf.

After what I'd consider a successful 2018 where I met all my goals (HC < 20 albeit briefly, break 90), I am looking forward to 2019 with a few milestones in mind...

  •  Take more lessons
  • Improve iron play and have more rather than less rounds with a 50% GIR acheived. This would be a huge improvement for me.
  • Perfect my "bump-n-run" shot and be more confident with it
  • Find that 170-190 club/shot that seems to elude me
  • Play golf with as many Spies as I can

Get my handicap back down to 2. Added distance and playing a bit more are the keys for me.

Mentioned a little about mine in another thread but I am taking one more shot at playing a competition schedule in 2019.  Looking to play the US Mid Am, US Am and US Open qualifiers along with several MET section events.  This will mean more time focused on practice and continued swing lessons along with a lot less time buying shiny new toys (well for golf anyway).

Best wishes to all who have goals for the 2019 golf season.

I sincerely hope that you all make satisfying progress toward meeting them.

My goal for the coming summer is to accept reality, move on, and do a lot of outdoor reading on my deck.

Barnes & Noble will be my new pro shop.

Maybe I'll learn something in my old age.

I made some specific goals last year (though admittedly I didn't write them down and therefore don't remember all of them). The big two that I wanted to achieve were: establish an official handicap (check!), and break 80 again (check!) so I'm pretty happy with that. I think I had something about wanting to reduce 3-putts to a certain amount and trying to save an average number of strokes on the short game or something. My season was such a mess (the past two really) so I pretty much gave up on several goals, but at least I got those two. However, I feel like I can barely claim the handicap because it's supposed to be based on an average of your best 10 out of 20 rounds and I think I only logged 16 full rounds. Thankfully, I played more than that, but I played various formats and wasn't able to apply all of them to my handicap.

For 2019: I'd like to get to a single-digit handicap. I'd like to break 80 on different courses (so far I've broken 80 twice on the same course). I want to take a golf trip (short trip up to KC to play with friends). I'd like to play at least 15 different courses. I want to play in more club tournaments (shouldn't be hard, I only played in like 3 this past year).

Go with something that will shave strokes. Based on your stats set a goal. If you get up and down 50% of the time set a goal for 75% or more greens or less putts. Simple things that will consistently get you under 80 and shave strokes

I don't think I've ever put together formal goals, so thanks for putting this thread out!

  • I bet I could shave a few putting strokes off most rounds.  I am going to hit the birdieball green hard this winter and get that 3-10 ft. make percentage up.
  • This putting work should help me get on track to a sub 5 hdcp.
  • I three-putt parred a par 5 on the 17th hole and ended up with a 73 this year.  I want to hit that 72 number at least once next year.
  •  I need to get out on the range and/or course next year.  I could get a range pass.  Or there is a par 3 foursome ten round punch pass for taking the fam out this summer that would come to 5 bucks a person to walk nine holes.  I only did this a few times this year, but loved watching the boys try so hard for some pars.  There is also a $200 player pass that lets me walk 9 or 18 for $9.  I haven't played the same course more than three times a season for seven years.  This pass is good at the course closest to me and another 27 hole course. The group I play with plays all over, but if I could get my money's worth out of this, I bet the course knowledge would be worth a couple of strokes by the end of the year, getting me all that much closer to the big 72.

I worked my way down from below a 6 GHIN this year from over 9 at the end of last year (has since moved back up to 7...). My main goal is to get below 5 next year. I should be able to play over 30 rounds with a similar amount of range sessions, and hope to lower my handicap by meeting these 3 specific goals.

1. More than 40% GIR (been around 33-35%)

2. More than 50% FIR (this is the main reason I've gone backwards last few months, need to re-find my driver)

3. Average less than 33 putts (need to maintain this, as my putting is a primary reason I am a single digit golfer with how I spray it!)

Bonus Goal: Figure out how to hit a fade consistently!

I had a bright shiny new knee installed on November 12th. Before that I’d be gimping around pretty good by the end of 18, and that’s when riding.

Looking forward to building up overall strength and endurance which will hopefully translate into a more consistent swing. Strength and endurance should translate into more rounds as well. For me that’s a good thing. I need to play more.

Overall goal? Stabilize in the mid 80’s and start to scare the lower 80’s by the end of the summer.

I’m looking forward to 2019!
