Winter Solstice 2018

Happy winter solstice to anyone who celebrates that.  It means that winter is officially here, but it also means that tomorrow the days will start getting longer.  How ironic is that!!

Also, tomorrow is a full moon so there will be more light at night too!!  A bonus!  It's also a rarity... the next time a full moon is within 24 hours of the winter solstice will be in 2029.  I won't see it, so I'm going to enjoy this one!!

I like Dec 21st as it means we are moving towards spring/summer as opposed to getting darker its now getting lighter each day (by seconds lol) but we get daylight up till about 11PM in Summer (dark at 4pm winter) so we can do 36 holes easily.

HOWEVER, Jan, Feb March are our worst months for winter weather 🙄

Re: on the daylight increase in case your interested:

The wobble (angle in relation to the sun) of the earth on its axis is sinusoidal, so if you can picture a sine wave....
Right now we are at the bottom going up and the change in daylight increase vs time is relatively slow.
As you get to the '0' crossing of the sine wave, thats the vernal equinox and that is as fast as the change in daylight increase vs time will get. From there the rate of increase slows till you hit the summer solstice.

FYI I wouldn't use this as a pick up line at the bar tonight unless you're Norm (from Cheers)

Sounds more like what Cliff Clavin would say.  Either way though, you're right!!

I know what you are talking about!!  I spent 10 years traveling to Russia.  Spent many solstices, winter and summer in St. Petersburg.  "White Nights" as they called it is much preferable; never really does get dark.
