A thread about Kirke

Now it's important to clarify: Kirke has a level of ambidexterity. He eats and writes left handed. He plays golf and throws right handed. In soccer, he clearly prefers his left foot.

Jealous. Would have been incredibly handy to be a switch hitter. Not sure if baseball interests him at all, but sounds like he'd be a natural fit for it.

I think we'll do baseball next season. He's played a few years of 6U soccer now. Had his last game this past Saturday, and he scored five goals. He must get his athletic ability from my wife, because he sure didn't get that from me!

That is just beautiful!  We don't get trees like that in central Oklahoma.

Just skimmed through this whole thread and I gotta say, I am so jealous of Kirke's swing right now.  He really looks like he knows his stuff.

I'm just waiting for my brother to make me an Uncle then I'll have a little guy, or girl, to teach.  Maybe by then I'll know what I'm doing.

It definitely does.

Obviously, it varies. In the 7+ years I've lived here, the latest I've played is the week of Thanksgiving (and then it snowed about 6 inches that Friday). Normally, we can expect to play through most of November. I'm normally willing to play in anything over 45°. I'll go a little lower on a sunny day without wind.

Did something today I've wanted to do for a long time: I left my clubs behind, took a camera, and recorded a full round with Kirke. Here's the first nine that we played (the back nine at our course). Kirke starts out rough: a bad second shot on the first results in a double bogey, and a tree on the second adds another bogey. From three over, he battles back into the round:

And here's the front nine (which we played second yesterday). He makes a number of bogeys early in the round, so we have to work through a bit of frustration, but he has another really nice finish:

While I haven't gotten to finish the video of the second part of Kirke's round, one of the things that really impresses me is the speed control he has on the greens. He leaves himself makeable second putts a lot. That putt from the fringe on 18 was just spectacular! Thanks for sharing these videos!

The other thing is that, when he does misjudge speed on his putts, his make percentage on second putts is crazy. If I'm remembering correctly, he has only one true 3-putt in the 18 holes of this round. There are a handful of second putts from outside four feet that he just buries.

That is one thing I want to maintain in him as long as possible: he putts more fearlessly than anyone I've ever seen. There is nothing defensive about his putting. He steps in with the full intention of making every putt, and immediately pulls the trigger.

My hunch is that when the day comes that that feeling of invincibility gets chipped, it's gone for good.

One of the great things I like, and I think you mentioned it in an earlier post, is that he loves to practice. Especially with him being so young, he is really grooving good technique which will hopefully help him of his confidence ever does get chipped.

Another thing that really impressed me was how he can read greens as quickly as he does. He was just stepping up and always seemed to be on the right line.

Kirke's shot of the day: a nice smooth wedge from about 45 yards that rattled off the flagstick:

He also set a new best nine hole score on the back: a three under 33, with a bogey on the final hole.

I found that, in the main, Kirke is lousy at giving lessons. It's a lot of, "Come on, just do it like this," as if I'm not trying

That’s pretty funny

I once paid a lot of money for trumpet lessons with one of the top trumpet players in the Country.

That was his teaching style - for $100 an hour in 1976! It was worth it just to stand next to him and hear him play -

So what will Kirke do with his off season?

Good question. We certainly don't have an organized practice schedule for him. Undoubtedly, he'll spend time putting in the basement. He'll do some SkyTrak time as well, though he hasn't yet shown any tendency to be a launch monitor junkie. He likes to play golf, and doesn't have a ton of patience for playing golf swing. That's something I'm not looking to change with him.

Hoping this off season to be more organized (for both him and me) doing SuperSpeed training. With his set last winter, he'd gotten the green stick near the mid 60s in speed; it would be great to see him crack 70mph with it this winter.

Adam Rehberg (Bridgestone rep) saw a post I put up on Twitter with Kirke's swing and encouraged me to submit his swing for Bridgestone's new online ball fitting tool. I'm always intrigued to see how (or if) golf tech tools handle junior golfers, so Kirke and I went in the garage this afternoon and captured a driver swing from him. I'll post the results from Bridgestone when they come in:

We got Kirke's numbers today from his Bridgestone video ball fitting:

0?ui=2&ik=4a976ebb7b&attid=0.1&permmsgid

These are likely all inflated a bit. I should get a measurement of Kirke's driver swing speed, but my guess is that it maxes out around 60 mph. With his lightest DIY SuperSpeed stick on the swing radar (which is normally regarded as giving slightly inflated readings), he tops out in the upper 60s.

The obviously brings down the rest of these numbers as well. A big drive for Kirke last year would carry just over 100 yards and roll out near 120. That said, he's a growth spurt away from putting up some of these numbers, and once he does, it's over: I'll never beat the kid again once he closes the gap in distance.

This is a great thread MPR. I have seen a few of these swings you have posted on twitter and he will be a force to recon with once he does get that distance.

I've noted elsewhere on this forum our disappointment with the set of "Cobra" junior clubs we got for Kirke's birthday this time last year. (I say "Cobra" because it turns out that they're a Dick's make with Cobra branding.) While the clubs have all the cool looks, they're just way too heavy for the age group they're designed for.

So I'll be building Kirke another set of junior clubs from Diamond Tour:

DTG is mostly known for their clone models of major OEM clubs, but it's hard to top the value on their junior clubs. (I've been bugging Sub 70 [owned under the same umbrella] to get some junior clubs under their branding.) The iron and wedge heads are $9/each. I grabbed a FW, hybrid, 6/8/PW/SW, with shafts, ferrules, and grips, and that was all under $100. The same setup with US Kids is at least double that. When you have a kid that grows out of club sizes on a regular basis, that price difference matters.

I'll likely get these all built up just after Christmas.

Because we don't have a coach for Kirke up here, I've tried (at this stage of his development) to take advantage of opportunities of the internet and occasionally get a qualified set of eyes looking at his swing. (As he gets older, we'll likely set up some more formal instruction.)

So today, Shauheen Nakhjavani (a very informative follow on Twitter and Instagram) offered to give free advice to those who would submit a swing. I uploaded one of Kirke's, and he replied with this:

I'm obviously proud of this kid (I can't claim any credit for "teaching" him the natural swing he has), but it's also very encouraging to me to have experts confirm what my eyes are seeing.

Plus, Kirke absolutely gets a kick out of reading things like this, as you might imagine!

You have a SkyTrak, do you think there would be any benefit to getting the $99 software to measure his results and progress over the winter? His swing looks great by the way.

Yeah, I have that package, and he's done at least one skills assessment. And I'll likely try to cajole him into doing one or two this winter. But what I've found so far is that he's just not a launch monitor junkie. He'll hit some shots on the SkyTrak, and he has some fun with it, but he'd by far rather be on the course. He's not technically minded about his golf at all, and I'm reluctant to change that.

So we end up playing a lot of the closet to the pin contests and things like that. We'll probably do some longest driver: his driver versus my wedge. And at his current rate of progress, that content will start moving up in my bag shortly.

His eyes start tracking down how target line as soon as he transitions into his downswing.
